Does anyone out there care bout the Kentucky Derby?!?!? Does Canada give a rats a$$ bout horse racing?

If so...any useful info anybody has would be great. Picks. Thoughts. Your potential bets.

If not...sorry.

Either way Go Canucks Go!

Lookin At Lucky is currently the odds on favorite at about 3-1 (3 races, 2 firsts and a third place finish)...

I would choose Sidney's Candy as he is currently 5-1 and is the second favorite right now (3 races, all first place finishes).

Dublin at 12-1 could also be a dark horse (2 seconds and a third).

Ice box currently at 10-1 odds (2 first place finishes and a 5th)...

I do a little gambling during the summers at my local track (Emerald Downs in Auburn, WA), so I'm no expert...But I would say that any of these four will have a good chance at winning it.

Edit: Remember though that their are 20 horses slated to start, it can become quite chaotic at some points of the race. Mine That Bird was last year's winner and was a 50-1 long shot! Anything can happen and sometimes it is worth it to put a little money on a long shot

If I were to place a bet it would be on Super Saver (14/1) or Devil May Care (12/1)

Devil May Care might be a bit of a risky bet though, as it's a female horse that's never run against males before. Quite an interesting story behind it. If it were to win it would be the fourth female to ever do so.

I was listening to a sport show today and the guy said that Mission Impossible is a dark horse to win. Should be an interesting race with the sloppy track.

Nah. Horse racing I find generally boring. I only really pay attention during the big races. It's just exciting to know that there's a possibility that you might win some money sometimes.

My picks are actually looking quite good. Super saver is down to 7/1, and devil may care is currently at 11/1, but when you take into account that it's one of only three horses that have won on a sloppy track it seems like a decent bet.

EDIT: Turns out that Super Saver has also won on a sloppy tack. Sweet.

Anybody watching the NBC coverage? Some guy just put $100,000 on Super Saver.

OK - I've gone with SuperSaver at 14/1, Devil May Care at 12/1, and Paddy O'Prado at 25/1.

I seem to have got much better odds than you guys.

Ha thanks. I wish I'd put more money on now, but I'm not really the type of guy that's willing to take the risk. Small bet, fairly decent profit.

Personally, I love horse racing. Back in the day...like the 20s or 30s horse racing was the biggest sport going.
Unfortuately there is only standardbreds which run only about 12 times here on the island. Learned to gamble at the track when I was about 10. I'd be the only kid in the betting line. Funny, no one ever said anything! They'd take anyones money! Good memories at the track... ;)

Anyway...great race from Borel and Super Saver today. Nice job Scottish-Canuck today. And how about the guy who made the $100000 bet. Apparently he won a contest to make a dream bet and he chose to place it at the Kentucky Derby...pretty ballsy to bet $100000 on a horse in a deep field like that! Won something like $900000...how effing exciting would that be!

“When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”-Sinclair Lewis

A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."-Albert Einstein

As a geology student it felt like the right thing to do

I LOVE horse racing (have family in the business and grew up at the track). We have a track here in Vancouver, Scotty (and a harness track in nearby Cloverdale). I may go catch the action from Hastings Park.

This year there's a local connection as our best jockey from Hastings is actually riding in the KD!! Mario Gutierez is one of my favourite jockeys (next to Pedro Alvarado), so I'll be cheering for him all the way. His would be a rags to riches story (as below).

Yeah, I remember talking to you about the race last year. If I remember correctly you picked the winner... maybe I should go with your pick

Decent odds at 14-1 too.

:)

This pick of mine is based solely on loyalty to a jockey who's won me some money and is locally based. He is top notch so, if it's a decent mount, he absolutely has the potential to do this. But probably not he safest bet. :)

Just watching the pre race coverage. Gotta say the Union Rags story is a great one....woman who battled back from a broken neck in a head on, goes on to breed horses, sells one of the colts from her farm for $145,000 then misses him and says she has to get him back. Goes to auction and pays $390,000 to get Union Rags (who appeared thrilled to go "home"...rolling around in the dirt blissfully). Love that story.

Stephen Colbert's going with Alpha. Because it reminds him of him.
Charles Barkley: Rousing Sermon (didn't catch his reasoning)
Joan Rivers: Done Talking (we wish?)
Jack Black's got my favourite: I'll Have Another

Record crowd of 165,307 in attendance

I wouldn't be sad if Union Rags took it, but really pulling for Mario and got a little teary in just watching him do his introduction. Go Mario!!

I too bet on I'll Have Another and Mario to win for the same reasons, just the local connection. So great to cheer for such an amazing finish! The payout is quite good, but the race itself was just simply fantastic.

Mario Gutierrez, who trained at Hastings Racetrack in Vancouver for six years, has won the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
Gutierrez was riding I'll Have Another.
He is originally from Mexico, and took the racing scene in Vancouver by storm, before moving to California.
He gave a big shout out to Hastings race course and Vancouver after he won, saying 'Vancouver has been so supportive.'
It was Gutierrez's first time and win in the Derby, and it is I'll Have Another's owner and trainer's first win as well.

Apparently Mario nearly left LA, as he was homesick for Vancouver/Hastings. Good thing he stuck it out, but sad to see him leave here.

I really thought the winning jockey would get more than $140,000.00. I mean, it's a lot for one race but I expected more in terms of how big the event is.

He's going to get so many more higher quality mounts in California because of this. The 140k from this race is just the tip of the iceberg. Unbelievable ride by Mario yesterday, it was great to see.

I bet my bud just for kicks $20 on a long shot, Falling Sky. I just feel like we're due for an upset...who can forget Arcangues? If I were betting serious money it'd be I'll Have Another..but I must confess I always root for the long shots ;)

Disregard Arcangues...that was a Breeders' Cup upset not a Derby upset. Anyway...still due for an upset...and won't surprise me.

He probably is..I wouldn't know really....I tend to watch the Triple Crown every year and I likely tune out horse racing the rest of the time besides the Breeder's Cup. I had a few favorites over the years but I gotta say that Cigar was my favorite over all. Charismatic would be the close second. I really liked Charismatic.
