I think he's going to be up here after the trade deadline.

Get him ready for the playoffs!

Agreed, Tanev is only going to get better by working on all aspects of the game as a Top 2 AHLer right now. Come playoff time he could move straight into the Top 6.

Is there something I'm missing? Why was Connaughton chosen over Tanev as an AHL all-star?

Kevin leads the entire AHL in Goals by a defenseman.

It isn't about who is the better prospect or who is closer to playing in the NHL. It is about who is playing the best at the AHL level...and often that means who is putting up the points. Being a great AHLer often does not lead to even a marginal NHL career.

Tanev was also injured and missed a fair amout of games. He has 0g, 12 a in 25 games, a near 0.5 ppg pace. Connauton has 9g, 10a in 38 games by contrast, another 0.5 ppg pace. Goals are weighted more (as they should be) and Tanev has also scored many of his points in multi-point single games, so there is no indication he will continue scoring. He'd have to have a ppg pace to make the all star game with no goals, anyways.

I too would like to see him take more shots on goal. He's at exactly 1 SOG per game and with the Canucks you know the coaches will be asking him to shoot even more anyway. Posted Image

Unless we make a trade to solidify our right side on defense, I am thinking more and more that Tanev is going to be called up sooner rather than later if Salo continues to be injury prone. As of now, we cannot find a suitable replacement on our roster to fill Salo's spot when he is out.

Well I called that one: Canucks recall Chris Tanev from Chicago.

It will be good to see if he can solidify our right side in the defensive zone with his right handed shot. We have been absolutely terrible at getting the puck out with everyone expect Bieksa being left handed shooters trying to lift the pucks out on backhands.

Edler - Tanev

This is a huge order for a 22-year-old to fill in, but I think Edler is mature enough to take the leadership role and guide Tanev. Honestly, Hamhuis and Bieksa are a great pairing, but Edler is our #1 defenseman, and should be playing the #1 shutdown pairing minutes. If Tanev can handle it, I see a huge promotion for him on the 1st pairing with Edler.

Yes, I consider whichever pairing Edler is on as the #1 pairing...

He has been brought up to play.

Hopefully Alberts is the one taken out of the line-up.... and NOT ballard.

Makes sense. I'd rather have Tanev with Edler than the bottom pairing guys since he'll play his natural side with him.

Bieksa and Hamhuis play the shutdown role alongside Kesler and his line. I personally wouldn't consider them the "#1 pairing", but deemed our shutdown defensive pairing. The real quality minutes I would think would be with the Sedins when they are on the ice and as Edler typically plays with the Sedins, I would suggest that he is already getting the best minutes in the more offensive role for the team. Would you really want our best offensive defenseman playing shutdown minutes instead?

I am curious to see if AV puts Tanev on the PP or not. Should be interesting to see him play in a more offensive role than he had last time when he was feeding passes to Glass.

perfect time for a callup for tanev as there is an opportunity for him to play in an elevated role, our PP is in disarray with rome and burrows on the points and our 2nd defensive pairing is horrid with edler and rome. Perfect for tanev to step-in and see what he can do with 20minutes a night.

great work, again!

it blows my mind he be that good defensively without throwing a hit. it's a huge advantage for him since he doesn't have to take himself out of a play to break up a play. he creates such unexpected, fast transitions that way. i mean how many takeaways did he have in that highlight package? looks good on top of the powerplay umbrella, too. He just needs to keep working on his shot.

Yeah, he really doesn't throw hits but it's not like he never initiates contact. He will pin guys against the boards... he just won't throw checks to hurt. Posted Image

And that's fine as long as his positioning and stickwork remain top notch. I'd rather he devote his energy towards skating, avoiding being crunched and making good outlets.

Is Chris Tanev going to be a potential shutdown defenseman? with some offensive upside? I think that Alex Edler-Tanev pairing is going to be very good for many years to come that could become a shutdown pairing

One day some of us will look back on the year and look at the chicago, and most of us will realize that it was a small bump in the road to the cup

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that defenceman Chris Tanev has been re-assigned to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.

wow, i am shocked they sent him down already i guess salo is going to back to playing 20+minutes so he can get hurt again.

Good move. Tanev isn't at the level where he'll play big minutes for 82 games with the big club, but we don't want him to be wasted on the third pairing either. Salo's impending retirement may require Tanev to fill in some shoes if Gillis can't find a good partner for Edler. The more minutes Tanev gets as a top pairing guy, the better.

That's a good idea, let him play a few games so he can get used to the NHL level again before the playoffs, he's a great depth defenseman to carry come playoff time.

I'm also surprised he got sent down ..I think he would be a better option than Rome, I would've liked to see Salo paired with Ballard and Tanev with Edler.

I would also prefer tanev over Rome, but what matters to the Canucks is the stanley cup!
I think it would be better for Tanev to get 20 minutes a night playing top PP minutes and also be the number 1 guy.

He will get stronger and better because of it. Then when the playoffs come we have.

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Salo
Ballard-Tanev

Or

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Tanev
Ballard-Salo

I think Rome is a good fill in guy until then.
We might not even need to get another Dman at the deadline.

Pretty much.

Too add or not to add. Basically seeing if Tanev is equivalent to the "trade acquisition" that Gillis had in mind.

The Chicago Wolves will be playing in Abbotsford for the next few days, so it allowed Vancouver to evaluate him further without forcing him to travel extra.
