Milton Finds Success on the Ice in Annual Holiday Tournaments

Boys' HockeyMilton's boys' and girls' varsity hockey teams both placed in the weekend's holiday tournament. The boys' team placed third in the 46th Annual Flood-Marr Tournament with an undefeated weekend, outscoring Andover, Hotchkiss and Nobles. Defenseman Pat McNally (I) and forward Dan Merenich (I) earned spots on the 2010 all-tournament team.

The Flood-Marr tournament began in 1965 and is named after long-time Milton coach Dick Marr and former Nobles coach Richard Flood. The three-day tournament, featuring the best teams in prep school hockey, draws a crowd, not only of family and friends, but also of college scouts looking for recruits. Milton has won the title five times since the tournament's inception.

Obviously he has a good weekend, I'll be interested to see if we can get some stats out of it.

They must have tied Westminster, giving them second in the round robin (probably based on goals for/against), and facing nobles for the 3rd place game, and winning it.

Milton ‘Three-Peats’ at Tabor Tournament

Milton Hockey

Milton clearly plays well by the water. The Mustangs topped Governor's 2-0 to win their third straight Tabor New Year’s Tournament. Milton has won 13 straight games at the tournament since losing 3-2 to the New England Jr. Coyotes five years ago. Seniors Dan Merenich (Horsham, PA) and Sean Okita (Newport Beach, CA) scored goals for Milton, and senior Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, NY) stopped every shot he faced.

Earlier in the tournament senior defenseman Pat McNally (Glen Head, NY) had a goal and two assists to lead Milton past Tilton 3-1. Later in the day, the Mustangs stormed from behind to defeat Hill School 5-4 in OT. Senior forward Sean Okita (Newport Beach, CA) had two goals including the game winner in overtime.

Milton's record on the year:

11-3-0 One of their games this week has been rescheduled due to that big 'ole blizzard that pounded the area.

Last season, on the brink of its first 20-win season since 1991, the Milton Academy boys' hockey team lost a shot at its first ISL Keller League championship in 45 years by 2 points to Nobles and wound up finishing the year at 19-6-2.

This time around, there will be no such heartbreak.

The Mustangs received two goals from senior forward Woody Hudson and a trio of assists by senior captain Pat McNally en route to a 4-1 victory over visiting Belmont Hill, which clinched Milton Academy (20-3-1) its first Keller League title since 1965.

“You’re certainly always happy when the kids are happy,” Milton Academy coach Paul Cannata said. “I’ve been coaching for a long time, and you realize that winning championships isn’t too common, no matter where you are, so you always appreciate it, especially in a league like the ISL.”

Milton Academy kicked off the scoring with 53 seconds remaining in the first period, then opened up a four-goal lead by the end of the second period, hanging on to reach 20 wins.

“It was good, but at the same time measured,” said Cannata, in his eighth season with the Mustangs and 21st overall as a coach. “They were certainly a happy bunch, happy to get this part of it done. But at the same time they were realistic that we have three weeks of hockey left, and still another trophy to play for.”

With 12 seniors, including McNally, a fourth-round draft pick by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2010 NHL draft who will attend Harvard in the fall, the time is now for the Mustangs to continue making history.

So far, they’re off to a good start

Don't know much about McNally but what I read on this thread. I have high hopes for him though. He was highly rated and has lots of potential despite being only a fourth rounder. Under the Gillis led Canucks, he will be given the opportunity to reach his full potential.

22 wins, 3 Losses, 1 Tie on the season for his team.

He has now lead his team to a school record for most wins in a season by any team sport. (formerly 20 games)

There is still 1 game left in their season, and they play it tomorrow.

What do you mean by lead? Are stats available?

i just read an interesting article on the guy that mentors McNally, Alexei Nikiforov. Apparently he teaches the european way to his long line of students, puck possesion rather than just dumping the puck. Im impressed of the line of students he's had, guys like Higgins, Kovalev, Malahkov , just to name a few. Sounds like McNally is in good hands

Wow, Tabor put up quite the fight last night, but McNally's team pulled out the 4-3 win in a triple overtime victory. They play again tomorrow against Lawrence Academy in Salem NH for their Semi-final match. They face Lawrence 2 times this season. their first meeting was a 3-1 loss, and the second one was a 6-2 win. In fact their loss to Lawrence was the last time they lost all season. it bodes well for McNally's team :D
