Canvoucer Vanuck
I've heard about that rover analogy. Wonder what kind of coaches they have at Harvard though, and whether they can teach him good defense and how to use his skill and skating to become effective against men. avelanch
http://canucks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=568989&navid=DL|VAN|home Harvard bound 2010 first round draft pick, Patrick McNally's doing all the right things to get to where he needs to be as he prepares for his first collegiate season. Monday, 11.07.2011 / 12:00 PM / Features By Joey Kenward The Canucks have a handful of players attending this year’s prospects camp who have spent the past few years playing high school hockey. In the case of defenseman Patrick McNally, he’s furthering his hockey education this week in Vancouver as he prepares to face different challenges, both on and off the ice, next season in university. McNally was the first player the Canucks selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, going in the fourth round (115th overall). The native of Glen Head, New York has spent the past few seasons playing for Milton Academy in Massachusetts. After taking part in his second Canucks prospects camp this week, McNally will be attending Harvard University next fall. “I’ve been really looking forward to this camp since this time last year,” says McNally. “It’s a great week.” McNally is coming off an outstanding season, one that saw him win the New England Prep Player of the Year honours. In 28 games, the 6’2”, 181lbs. blue-liner led his team in scoring with 22 goals and 29 assists. He helped Milton Academy to an overall record of 26-3-1, which was capped off with that program’s first ever New England Boy’s Hockey Title. “He challenged himself last year to lead his team,” says Canucks Director of Player Development Dave Gagner. “He’s heading into Harvard with a lot of expectations from the coaching staff that he’s going to be able to jump in and play big minutes for them next year.” Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that after the year he just had, McNally felt much more comfortable and confident entering this year’s Prospects Camp at Rogers Arena. “Last year I was a little more anxious and nervous,” adds McNally. “This year I came in knowing what to expect. I’m so excited to do it again.” As he prepares to enter his first season of NCAA hockey, McNally knows there will be some big steps to take as a player and as a student. The son of a FBI agent, McNally knows he’s in for a busy year, both on the ice and in the classrooms of an Ivy League school. “Obviously is going to be an adjustment,” says McNally. “The players are going to be a lot bigger, faster, and stronger. Hopefully I can fit in and play well next year.” “He’s taking some classes at Harvard this summer while at the same time training at the school,” comments Gagner. “He should be acclimated to the surroundings by the time the season starts.” Even though the 19 year-old defenseman will be a freshman with the Crimson this coming season, Gagner feels he’ll be put into a prime role to succeed in different areas. “We believe he’s going to get an opportunity to play on the first power play unit,” says Gagner. “The coaching staff understands what type of player Patrick is. They’re going to give him some freedom to do that, as long as he’s responsible and plays hard defensively.” Seeing as he doesn’t want to forego his college eligibility, McNally will not be participating in the Canucks Prospects Tournament in Penticton, B.C. September 11-15. However that doesn’t mean he’s lacking in motivation to one day being able to play with the Canucks. “It’s not that hard to look around and see reasons for motivation,” says McNally. “We’re in the Canucks locker room. We saw them play all through the playoffs and get one win away from the Stanley Cup. That really motivates you.” “Of course it’s going to be important, but it’s just another week to get better,” concludes McNally. “I want to work on my game and get one step closer to one day taking part in a full training camp and maybe one day turning pro.” REALLY looking forward to see how he does with Harvard this season, I like how Gagner (it appears) is in communication with the Harvard staff already. Ilya Mikheyev
I still think he was a really good pick in the 4th round. And because we aren't rushing him at all due to depth, I think he is going to develop real well.

BureisBest
Another promising defenseman in our system. I like that we selected a player going to Harvard that is also a leader on the ice. He has character that Mike Gillis looks for, but also has good skills. Will he be in NHL one day? Who knows. I am looking forward to following him this year in Harvard. He is a 4th rounder so if he turns out to play pro for us, that's a great job by our scouts and management. Low percentage of players from these rounds make it, despite how promising they all seem. avelanch
Though the canucks history of 4th round picks has been a little dubious, esp of late, but we've had numerous years of no 4th round picks so that dillutes it a bit. 4th round picks in Canucks history: Year Player Games Played 2011 Joseph Labate 0 2010 Patrick McNally 0 2009 Jeremy Price 0 2005 Alexandre Vincent 0 2004 Andrew Sarauer 0 2003 Brandon Nolan 6 2003 Ty Morris 0 2002 John Laliberte 0 2001 Evgeny Gladskikh 0 1998 Regan Darby 0 1997 Chris Stanley 0 1996 Jonas Soling 0 1995 Lloyd Shaw 0 1994 Mike Dubinsky 0 1993 Dieter Kochan 21 1992 Brent Tully 0 1990 Darin Bader 0 1989 Brett Hauer 37 1987 Doug Torrel 0 1986 Ronnie Stern 638 1985 Randy Siska 0 1984 Brian Bertuzzi 0 1983 Tim Lorenz 0 1982 Shawn Kilroy 0 1981 Wendell Young 187 1980 Marc Crawford 176 1979 Art Rutland 0 1978 Harald Luckner 0 1978 Brad Smith 222 1977 Dave Morrow 0 1977 Murray Bannerman 289 1976 Elmer Ray 0 1975 Glen Richardson 24 1974 Harold Snepsts 1033 1973 Keith Mackie 0 1972 Ron Homenuke 1 1970 Brent Taylor

So going by that list of our 4th rounders not including Price, McNally, Labate, or Blomstrand, 32% of picks have played at least one game in NHL for us. For sure it's not unheard of for them to make it, but the odds are not in McNally's favour for sure. Of course I'm not saying he wont make it, just that he has to buck a trend or be one of the minority that pushed through to the NHL.

I'm hoping Gillis's picks buck the trend. looking back through the 4th rounders that made it into the NHL, Annaheim did a great job with their 4th rounders as of late. Guest Dasein
Labate would be our best chance at a 4th rounder making it to the NHL IMO.

Canvoucer Vanuck
Thanks for finding that; it helps a lot. I wonder what sort of style Harvard plays, and whether McNally's freewheeling style will fit in and even be encouraged there. Just a thought. Niloc009
im basing that opinion on the very fact that he played milton high school hockey hell need to learn to play defense So if a player plays hockey in high school, they can't play defence? Or if they play at Milton specifically? I don't understand the logic here.
