IceDogs Drop Frontenacs 6-2

Friesen and Archie lighting up the PP

Dougie Hamilton led the Niagara IceDogs to a 6-2 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs with a goal and two assists in front of another sold-out crowd at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Sunday afternoon. Darren Archibald also notched two goals and an assist for the 'Dogs in their convincing win over the visiting Fronts.

Mark Visentin stopped 30 shots and picked up an assist in his first game back in net for the IceDogs since the IIHF World Junior tournament in Buffalo, while Jason Wilson, Andrew Agozzino and Johnson Andrews also potted goals for Niagara.

The IceDogs kicked things off at the 11:15 mark of the first on the power play as the Hamilton brothers collaborated efforts with Freddie making a cross-crease pass right onto the stick of brother Dougie who was pinching in from the point. Dougie made no mistake in one-timing the puck into the net to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead.

The Frontenacs looked outplayed until the dying minutes of the period when Nathan Moon was the first to score for his team after an awkward play behind the IceDogs net, before Mark Visentin's World Junior teammate Erik Gudbranson potted a goal from the point to put Kingston up 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Things got rough just past the midway mark of the second as Erik Gudbranson seemed to be on a mission to drop the gloves as he went after a much smaller Alex Friesen in front of the Kingston net. After several players took roughing penalties, Gudbranson's double minor put the IceDogs on a four minute power play.

Andrew Agozzino converted almost right away with the man advantage to pick up his 25th goal of the year, before Darren Archibald followed up soon after with a wrist shot from the top of the circle to put the IceDogs up 4-2 - both goals came on the power play.

The second period ended on a physical note as Johnson Andrews went toe-to-toe with Connor Stokes after Stokes was pestering the IceDogs throughout the majority of the game. Both players were throwing bombs but Andrews' landed the majority until he slipped to the ice and Stokes took four late shots, striking Andrews' head while he was lying on the ice.

After sitting out for the remainder of the period, both players would return in the third.

The IceDogs did a great job killing off a five-on-three and a few other minor penalties in the third period, and things calmed down quite a bit in the final frame allowing the 'Dogs to stay composed and hold onto the lead.

The Fronts pulled their goalie in the final minute in efforts to tie the game, but Darren Archibald scored on the open net to pick up his second of the game before Johnson Andrews came back after his fight and scored a beautiful breakaway goal with just 15 seconds left to give Niagara a 6-2 win over Kingston.

The IceDogs will return to action this coming Thursday, Jan. 13 as they host Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick Greg McKegg and the Erie Otters at 7 p.m.

Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location. For more information, please contact the IceDogs office at 905-687-DOG1.

Ice Dogs upended the first place Mississauga Majors,in the process:

The Niagara IceDogs defeated the first place Mississauga Majors for the first time this season by a 5-3 score at the Hershey Centre Friday night, improving their record to 28-10-2-3.

Rookie defenseman Luke Mercer opened the scoring by taking a shot from the point that beat Mickael Audette to pick up his second goal of the season and give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead.

Mercer's tally would stand alone until the 12:04 mark of the second period when Joseph Cramarossa potted his 10th of the season to tie the game at one.

Steven Shipley then answered back just over three minutes later to regain the lead with Luke Mercer picking up his second point of the game while Simon Gronvaldt would also add an assist on the play.

Shortly after the goal, the IceDogs were awarded a power play and Alex Friesen was able to convert with the man advantage with the help of the IceDogs two CHL Top Prospects participants, Dougie Hamilton and Ryan Strome, giving the 'Dogs a 3-1 lead.

With just four seconds left in the second, Majors' defender Michael D'Orazio beat Visentin to bring the game back within one goal as the two teams headed into the second intermission.

The IceDogs quickly redeemed the late-period marker with another goal of their own just 1:53 into the third - this time Freddie Hamilton would put one home with the help of Strome and Mike Schwindt, increasing the Niagara lead to 4-2.

After Jason Wilson mixed things up with Casey Cizikas early in the third, Mitchell Theoret took a turn getting involved in the rough stuff as he dropped the gloves with Derek Shoenmakers just past the 10 minute mark to give the game some energy.

Unfortunately Rob Flick was able to get another goal for the Majors following the tilt and the game was brought back within one once again, making it a 4-3 score.

With the time on the clock running out, Mississauga emptied their net for the extra attacker in efforts to tie the game, but Jason Wilson put the puck into the net to seal the deal and give the IceDogs a 5-3 win over the Majors.

The IceDogs return to action tomorrow night back in Niagara as they host the Sudbury Wolves at 7 p.m., before finishing off the weekend with the final game of a home-and-home with the Majors Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Tickets for the two home games are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location, or at the Gatorade Garden City Complex box office, which opens two hours prior to puck drop.

21st goal in a winning effort plus the hit that Rogers Arena refers to:

The third period started with a physical tone as Alex Friesen laid possibly one of the biggest, clean hits of the season on Mike Lomas, before Michael Sgarbossa proceed to jump Friesen in retaliation.

Although Friesen did not drop his gloves or take more than two strides leading into the hit, he was given a minor penalty for charging while Sgarbossa was given a roughing penalty to make the play four-on-four.

Alex gets his 22nd goal and an assist (28) in a losing effort.

Majors Smith-Pelly really lit it up tonight with a natural hat trick:

The Niagara IceDogs were edged 6-3 in a hard-fought battle against the league's first-place Mississauga Majors in front of a sold-out crowd at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Sunday afternoon.

The IceDogs set the tone early with two quick goals in the first 65 seconds of play.

Andrew Agozzino continued his hot-streak with a beautiful breakaway goal while the two teams were playing four-on-four hockey after Joseph Cramarossa and Steven Shipley went off for coincidental roughing minors.

Alex Friesen then followed up with his 22nd goal of the season just 20 seconds later with Agozzino notching the assist to make it 2-0 for the home-team.

World Junior gold medalist Maxim Kitsyn then took a minor penalty for interference at the 3:23 mark, and Freddie Hamilton gave the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead as he tipped in an Alex Friesen shot from the point.

Both Friesen and Hamilton have scored goals in all three games this weekend, while Agozzino has potted two in the last two.

A familiar face got the Majors back in the game at the 9:28 mark of the first - former IceDog Chris DeSousa beat Dalton McGrath for his second goal in two games this weekend against Niagara, giving the game a 3-1 score.

Mississauga's leading scorer Justin Shugg, a Niagara Falls native, followed DeSousa's marker with a goal of his own about a minute and a half later to continue the fast-paced trend of the period and bring the Majors within one goal.

Both teams killed off penalties throughout the remainder of the first, and the score would remain at a 3-2 Niagara lead going into the intermission. Shots were 17-7 in favour of Mississauga.

The Majors continued to press in the second period, and eventually were awarded with a tying goal from Devante Smith-Pelly at the 11:06 mark, giving the game a score of 3-3 after 40 minutes.

Mississauga came out hard in the third period, mimicking the start the IceDogs had in the first period as Devante Smith-Pelly completed a natural hat-trick with two quick goals under ten seconds apart; the first came just 43 seconds into the period, and the Majors took their first lead of the game - 5-3.

Tempers began to flare in the latter half of the third and Majors captain Casey Cizikas dropped the mitts with an unlikely opponent, Freddie Hamilton. Hamilton held his own and out-muscled Cizikas, landing a couple shots and getting the take down.

Unfortunately, after the fight Mississauga was able to convert for their sixth goal of the game from Riley Brace.

The Majors would take a 6-3 victory over the IceDogs to cap off the home-and-home weekend.

The IceDogs will kick-off next weekend's schedule at home on Thursday, Jan. 27 as they host former IceDogs' assistant captain Dylan MacEachern and the London Knights at 7 p.m.

Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location throughout the Niagara Region. For more information, please contact the IceDogs office at 905-687-DOG1. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

King on CHL: 'Nucks prospect on hot list

January 24, 2011

Canadian world junior teammates will go head-to-head when the Montreal Juniors head to Bathurst to meet the Titan. Louis Leblanc, who hardly missed a step since his return to Montreal, will go up against the red-hot Olivier Roy.

Meanwhile, Senators prospect Jared Cowen and Canucks prospect Alex Friesen are inching closer to some career milestones.

* * * * *

Canadian NHL teams' OHL prospects:

Alex Friesen, Vancouver (Niagara) - drafted 172nd overall in 2010

Friesen enjoyed a productive week with three goals and three assists in three games. He was also a plus-5. Friesen scored a goal in each of his last four games and has points in five straight. He is now 10 points shy of tying his career-best of 60 points in a season.

Time flying by for Friesen

Sports

Updated 3 hours ago

It seemed like only yesterday the Niagara IceDogs made Alex Friesen their second-round pick in the 2007 OHL draft.

Even Friesen finds it hard to believe he was playing his 215th career game Sunday afternoon in a 6-3 loss to the visiting Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. He and Andrew Agozzino are the only two players who have been with the IceDogs since their move to St. Catharines.

"I remember my first year coming in and the older guys saying to cherish it and soak it in because it's going to go fast. And it has gone fast," said Friesen, who scored his 22nd goal of the season and added an assist Sunday. What has been even more special for the soon-to-be 20-year-old Niagara-on-the-Lake native is that he has had the chance to play his entire OHL career in front of family and friends.

"The support has been fantastic. We've gotten great crowds throughout the years and the family support has been an extra boost for me. Obviously when you're 16, it's hard to make the transition to living away from home. Staying at home has been a real positive in my progress as a person and as a hockey player."

The sixth-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2010 NHL draft has also made the welcome transition this season to being one of several players expected to lead the offence on any given night. In the previous couple of seasons, the IceDogs needed Friesen and Agozzino to contribute offensively every night.

"Being deep definitely helps in all areas," Friesen said. "I'm playing less minutes, I'm more fresh, and this is the deepest team we had since I've been here.

"We're looking forward to keep moving on and keep improving throughout the whole season because the playoffs is when it really matters."

Friesen's goal Sunday left him just one goal shy of his career high set last season.

"With team success comes personal success and I'm happy with our team. We can compete with anyone," the 5-foot-10, 189-pounder said.

The IceDogs were more than competing with the Majors early on, building a 3-0 lead by the 4:33 mark of the first period on goals by Agozzino (29), Friesen and Freddie Hamilton (23). Mississauga replaced starting goalie Michael Audette with Taylor Edwards after Audette allowed goals on the first two shots of the game.

Alex picks up his 29th assist in a 7-6 shootout loss:

The Niagara IceDogs were edged 7-6 in a shootout by the London Knights after a thrilling, fast-paced game at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Thursday night.

London opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the first as Stephen Sanza beat Mark Visentin for his 15th of the season from Jarred Tinordi.

The IceDogs answered right back at the 7:59 mark as Ryan Strome let a wicked wrist-shot go from just inside the circle after accepting a perfect pass from Jason Wilson, while Shayne Rover also picked up an assist on the play.

The score would remain at a 1-1 tie going into the first intermission.

Niagara thought they got things going early in the second as Jason Wilson blasted a shot past Knights' goalie Michael Houser, but the goal was called off as Ryan Strome made incidental contact with the goaltender preventing him from being able to make the stop, and the game remained tied at one.

Returning in his first game back from a four game suspension, Johnson Andrews gave the 'Dogs their first lead of the night with a huge goal that came by tipping in a Mike Schwindt point shot. IceDogs rookie Billy Jenkins would also record his first career OHL point with an assist on the goal.

The Knights kept the scoring rally alive by answering Andrews' goal with two more of their own both coming on the power play from Stephen Sanza, who notched his second of the game, while Jared Knight also scored to give the game a 3-2 score in London's favour.

When Andrew Agozzino is sent on a breakaway, he means business. The IceDogs captain made no mistake in beating Houser with a beautiful wrist shot to notch his 30th tally of the season and tie the game 3-3.

Jared Knight answered Agozzino's goal while London was on a five-on-three power play to pick up his second of the game and put his team ahead once again.

The fast-paced trend of the game would only continue in the dying seconds of the period as Dougie Hamilton recorded his 9th goal of the season on the power play by walking in from the point and making a nifty move to beat Houser after accepting an impressive cross-crease pass from his brother Freddie.

The two teams would head into their respective dressing rooms with an even score of 4-4 after 40 minutes of play.

Andrew Agozzino continued to work hard in the third as he muscled his way into the slot allowing him to tap in an Alex Friesen rebound to pick up his second goal of the game five minutes into the period.

With Ryan Strome going off for cross-checking at the 14:05 mark of the third, the Knights red-hot power play would go to work once again, and they tied the game 5-5 with the goal coming from rookie Ryan Rupert.

Shortly after the London goal, Freddie Hamilton continued to showcase his elite passing skill as he sent the puck right onto the stick of Jason Wilson, who hammered it home for his second point of the night, giving the 'Dogs a 6-5 lead late in the third.

London was not ready to give up yet as they pulled their goaltender and Ryan Rupert sniped a shot over the shoulder of Visentin to make it a 6-6 game, sending it into overtime.

After both Jared Knight and Darren Archibald scored in the first round of the shootout, the next four shooters missed, and Vladislav Namestnikov would score the shootout winner to give the Knights a 7-5 victory in Niagara.

The IceDogs will finish their weekend on a two-game U.S. road trip as they face the Plymouth Whalers on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7:05 p.m., before visiting the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7:11 p.m.

Alex chips in with his 23rd goal in a 5-4 win over the Conference leading Spirit:

The Niagara IceDogs picked up their second straight road victory over the Western Conference's first place Saginaw Spirit. Freddie Hamilton scored 2 goals and three points while Ryan Strome added three assists.

Freddie Hamilton wasted no time in getting the IceDogs on the board as he potted his 25th of the year just 19 seconds into the game with the help of Ryan Strome.

David Pacan followed up just under seven minutes in with Andrew Agozzino and Dougie Hamilton adding helpers to make it 2-0.

Saginaw sniper Josh Shalla then picked up his 37th goal of the season on the power play just past the 13 minute mark to give the game a 2-1 score.

John McFarland then tied the game just over a minute later, but Alex Friesen was able to regain the Niagara lead on a power play opportunity while Strome and Freddie Hamilton picked up their second points of the night on the play.

The score was 3-2 in favour of the IceDogs after the first 20 minutes.

The next goal wouldn't come until the 8:14 mark of the second as Darren Archibald notched his 28th of the year from Simon Gronvaldt to increase the IceDogs' lead to 4-2.

The Spirit made another comeback as Jordan Szwarz scored a short-handed marker to make it 4-3.

Freddie Hamilton continued to dominate with his second tally of the night eight minutes later. Strome also picked up his third point of the night, while Tim Billingsley recorded his first point since returning from injury.

That made it 5-3 IceDogs going into the second intermission.

Justin Kea brought the game within a goal once again by scoring at the 17:09 mark of the third, but that is as close as it would come as the IceDogs held onto a 5-4 lead to pick up their second straight win on the road.
