Not surprisingly, the Manitoba Moose remain a work in progress after hitting the quarter pole of the American Hockey League season on Tuesday night in Illinois.

A 2-1 shootout loss to the Chicago Wolves left the Moose with a record of 11-6-0-3, but they’ve got plenty of work to do before establishing themselves among the elites of the North Division and the AHL.

With a new head coach, a new captain and a host of new players, the Moose understood there would be growing pains and there have been several to endure.

They’re learning how to play with a lead and trying to make sure the work ethic is there on a more consistent basis.

There’s a solid young nucleus and a roster littered with some intriguing prospects, so it will be interesting to see how things unfold during the second quarter and throughout the campaign.

The most impressive facet of the Moose is easy to identify.

“Our goaltending has stood out,” Moose captain Nolan Baumgartner said in a recent interview. “The first quarter is usually when you come together and start gelling as a team and I think we’ve been doing that.”

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the individual areas through the first 20 games.

GOALTENDING (A): Perhaps the biggest question mark going into the season with Cory Schneider graduating to the NHL on a full-time basis. The Moose were confident in the experience of Tyler Weiman, but Swedish rookie Eddie Lack was an unknown commodity coming into the season because of his lack of game action the past few seasons. Lack impressed during training camp with the Vancouver Canucks and he’s posted a goals against average below two while starting 12 of the first 20 games. Weiman has been steady but he’s used to a heavier workload. Head coach Claude Noel utilized successful tandems in the past and it will be interesting to see how he distributes the starts during the second quarter.

DEFENCE (B): With two rookies and one second-year player playing regularly on most nights, the blue-line brigade is holding up nicely. Baumgartner and Lee Sweatt are leading the way and logging the most minutes, but the youngsters like Kevin Connauton, Chris Tanev and Evan Oberg are pulling their weight so far. Finding a way to get Ryan Parent, who is in the midst of a two-week conditioning stint, here on a full-time basis would be a huge addition, but he is subject to waivers.

FORWARDS (C+): There’s ample skill on the roster, but the attack hasn’t exactly been high-powered to this point. Sergei Shirokov leads the team in points, but entered Wednesday outside the Top-50 scorers in the AHL. Rookie Cody Hodgson survived a slow start (no points in five games) and has been a force during the first quarter. Sniper Jeff Tambellini was dangerous during his seven games but is back with the parent club, along with fellow free agent signing Joel Perrault — who hadn’t lived up to expectations before his recent promotion. Jordan Schroeder (three goals, 11 points) isn’t producing at the pace he expects of himself but Noel has been happy with his all-around game of late and last year’s scoring leader Marco Rosa had only five points in the first 20 games. The depth is there, so there is reason to believe this group could lead the charge going forward."

First time i saw this guy, preseason, you could tell he's gonna be a top prospect. For his future??? Let him mature in the AHL while we have cory as Lu's backup then if we cant resign cory bring up lack as the new back up???

Either way lovin watchin this guy play!!!

Seems like a good assessment, the Moose have a lot of new players in the line up and most of them are rookies so considering that their record is quite good. Once the team gels a bit better and the coach figures out the best lines i think they can be a deadly team. The talent and skill is there its just a matter of time before they click. So far lack is looking like a diamond in the rough and I think in no time at all he will be the starter in stead of rotating between him and Weidman.

Player Team GP MIN SA GA SO GAA SV% W L SOL

Jacob Markstrom Rochester Americans 17 1014 518 62 0 3.67 0.880 7 10 0

Eddie Lack Manitoba Moose 12 729 320 23 0 1.89 0.928 6 4 2

Can you guess which one was the starter and which one was the backup of the last team these two played on?

Lack has been very impressive.

Markstrom's numbers look pretty bad for the guy that is supposed to be the best goalie not currently in the NHL. He is supposed to be the guy the Panthers rely on after Vokoun leaves(probably at the end of this season or sooner).

I'd like to see Parent clear waivers and get some games with the Moose. He seems like a guy that could still develop into a solid NHL defenseman.
