Archi pots one,his fifth of the playoffs,in a 5-1 drubbing of Brampton:

The Niagara IceDogs defeated the Brampton Battalion by a score of 5-1 to take a 3-0 series lead in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,145 at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Tuesday night.

The IceDogs struck first as Jason Wilson put the puck past Cody St. Jacques after accepting a pass from Ryan Strome, who created a turnover in the neutral zone to make the play possible.

Freddie Hamilton then followed up with his second goal of the playoffs at the 14:37 mark of the first to give Niagara a 2-0 lead. Jason Wilson picked up his second point of the game tonight with an assist on the play, while Shayne Rover also added a helper in his return from a brief lower-body injury.

The IceDogs had a chance to make it 3-0 late in the period with a shot at the power play, but St. Jacques made some big saves for the Battalion to keep the game at a close 2-0 score heading into the first intermission.

Despite the 'Dogs 2-0 lead, Brampton was ahead on the shot clock 12-10.

The opening of the second period scoring didn't come until the 7:34 mark as Alex Friesen made a nifty back-handed pass from behind the Battalion net to an open David Pacan, who made no mistake in snapping it in from the slot to increase the Niagara lead to 3-0.

The remainder of the second period went both ways for the most part, but the IceDogs managed to squeeze in another goal with just 43 second left in the frame. to give them a commanding 4-0 lead.

This time, Andrew Agozzino would get the marker to record his first of the playoffs, while Alex Friesen added his second assist of the game.

After 40 minutes, the IceDogs had a 4-0 cushion over the Battalion, while also leading the shot clock 26-20.

The Battalion finally broke Visentin's five period shutout at the 8:02 mark of the third as Zach Bell put home his first of the playoffs with the help of Philip Lane to cut the Niagara lead to 4-1.

The IceDogs tried to keep the play in the Brampton zone as much as they could throughout the remainder of the third, and more rough stuff occurred as the period went on.

Darren Archibald would however score his fifth of the playoffs with under four minutes left in the third to make it 5-1 Niagara.

With a commanding lead late in the third, the IceDogs killed the clock and took their third straight victory over the Battalion, 5-1.

Game four of the quarterfinal series will take place this Thursday, Mar. 31 at 7 p.m. at the PowerAde Centre in Brampton.

Archi picks up one assist as the Dogs sweep the Battalion with a 4-1 win:

he Niagara IceDogs completed a four-game sweep of the Brampton Battalion with a 4-1 victory in game four at the PowerAde Centre Thursday night, meaning the Battalion are eliminated from the playoffs and the IceDogs will advance to the Eastern Conference semifinal round.

In his second game back after recovering from an internal injury, Johnson Andrews opened the scoring in game four by making a solid individual effort to break into the offensive zone and beat St. Jacques with a firm wrist shot glove side to give the game a 1-0 score.

Philip Lane and Spencer Abraham created some quality scoring chances for the Battalion in the latter half of the first, while the Agozzino-Friesen-Pacan line had some good cycles going for the ‘Dogs to keep the pressure on.

Niagara took a 2-0 lead with 4:47 left in the first as Myles Doan put one past St. Jacques for his first of the playoffs from Darren Archibald and Steven Shipley.

The ‘Dogs would keep the 2-0 lead after 20 minutes while also leading the shot clock 8-7.

IceDogs captain Andrew Agozzino gave Niagara a 3-0 lead just 46 seconds into the second as he tipped in a Dougie Hamilton point shot while on a power play that carried over from the first period. Ryan Strome also notched an assist on the play.

Battalion defender Marcus McIvor then took a holding penalty shortly after the goal, and Agozzino picked up his second tally of the game with the man advantage to make it 4-0 IceDogs 3:02 into the second.

Although the IceDogs started the third on the power play, Battalion forward Sam Carrick was tripped up on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot while shorthanded. However, Carrick couldn't come up with a move creative enough to beat the hot goaltending of Mark Visentin, and the score remained 4-0 in Niagara's favour.

The Battalion finally struck back with just over 13 minutes left in the third as Stephon Thorne scored his second of the playoffs to break Visentin's shutout and give the game a score of 4-1.

The play was brought to four-on-three late in the third as Shayne Rover and Philip Lane went off for roughing, and Mike Schwindt took a cross-checking minor shortly after to put the Battalion on a power play.

The 'Dogs managed to kill off the four-on-three Battalion advantage, picking up a 4-1 victory to sweep Brampton in four games and advance to the Eastern Conference semifinal round of the 2011 OHL Playoffs.

The Niagara IceDogs were defeated 6-4 by the Oshawa Generals in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal Saturday night to even the series 1-1.

After a chippy start to the game, Alex Friesen opened the scoring with his first goal of the playoffs just under three minutes in, beating Peter De Silvo and giving the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after the tally, Ryan Strome went off for hooking and Alain Berger tied the game 1-1 with his 5th of the playoffs from Christian Thomas and Calvin de Haan.

Christian Thomas then picked up his second point of the game on the power play with a go-ahead goal at the 9:38 mark to give Oshawa its first lead of the game.

After the Gens scored back-to-back power play goals, the IceDogs got a chance with the man advantage and Ryan Strome capitalized as he ripped a shot past Di Silvo to notch his 3rd of the playoffs, tying the game once again.

Neither team could convert again throughout the remainder of the frame and the two teams would head into the dressing room with an even 2-2 score.

In the second period, both teams exchanged goals around the 11 minute mark starting with Nicklas Jensen for Oshawa and Darren Archibald for Niagara. Both players would notch their sixth of the playoffs to give the game a 3-3 score.

Once again, the game remained at a tight score going into the intermission, with Niagara leading the shot clock 20-14.

Early in the third, Steven Shipley thought he put the 'Dogs up 4-3, and although video evidence showed the puck crossed the line, it was ruled no-goal and the score remained 3-3.

Mitchell Theoret would however regain the lead with a solid individual effort that resulted in a highlight reel goal where he flipped the puck over a defenders stick and made a nifty deke to give the game a 4-3 score.

The Gens didn't give up and answered right back with two quick goals from Jensen and Boone Jenner to give them a 5-4 advantage at the approach of the midway mark.

After taking a minor penalty for high sticking (which the Generals killed off), Christian Thomas made it 6-4 Oshawa by letting a wicked wrist shot go upon breaking into the IceDogs zone at the 12:45 mark of the frame.

Coach Marty Williamson pulled Visentin early in efforts to tie the game, and the Gens took a penalty with just over two minutes left to give the 'Dogs a 6-on-4 power play opportunity.

However, the advantage wouldn't last long as Alex Friesen took a slashing penalty shortly after, bringing the play to 4-on-4.

Oshawa was able to hold Niagara off and the home team took a 6-4 win to even the series 1-1.

Game 3 will take place this Monday, Apr. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Gatorade Garden City Complex in St. Catharines. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location as well as the arena box office, which opens at 5 p.m. on game day.

The Niagara IceDogs defeated the Oshawa Generals by a score of 5-3 to gain a 2-1 series lead in front of a packed house at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Monday night.

Mark Visentin played another solid game in net stopping 46 shots to hold on to Niagara's lead.

The IceDogs opened the scoring just 63 seconds into the game as Ryan Strome potted his fourth of the playoffs with the help of Jason Wilson and Jesse Graham to give the 'Dogs an early 1-0 lead.

Niagara kept the pressure on early and Simon Gronvaldt picked up a loose puck at the point and blasted it past Peter Di Salvo to make it 2-0 with 17:38 left in the first.

The Generals then got into some penalty trouble taking two separate minor penalties around the midway point the period, and although the 'Dogs didn't capitalize on the 5-on-3, Andrew Agozzino did score moments later while one man up to make it 3-0 IceDogs.

Late in the period, the IceDogs managed to make it 4-0 when the play was brought to 4-on-4 with coincidental penalties. Darren Archibald potted his seventh of the season on a nifty backhand while Dougie Hamilton and Jesse Graham both recorded their second assists of the game on the play.

Niagara would take the 4-0 lead into the first intermission, leading the shot clock 16-13.

The second period didn't have quite the offensive urgency that was seen in the first, but the action was by no means dull as both teams picked up the physical play and laid some massive hits throughout the frame.

Ryan Strome took a rough hit from behind which led to a scuffle and coincidental penalties, while Freddie Hamilton got into it with Boone Jenner later in the period and the two went off for unsportsmanlike minors as well.

Late in the period, Generals forward Andy Andreoff was disturbed during a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot with just seven seconds left. He managed to beat Visentin with a nifty move to the backhand to give the game a 4-1 score after 40 minutes of play.

However, on the same play, the Gens took a minor penalty for roughing after the whistle and the 'Dogs would start the third period with a man advantage.

The Generals killed the penalty off along with a few more in the first half of the third and began to show some urgency, controlling the play in the IceDogs zone around the midway mark of the period.

The momentum led to a goal as Scott Laughton picked up a rebound in the slot and put it past Visentin to bring the game to a 4-2 score with seven minutes remaining.

The 'Dogs took a penalty late in the game and the Generals pulled their goalie in efforts to tie the game.

They were able to capitalize, but the goal came due to Andy Andreoff tossing Visentin's stick behind the IceDogs net giving Visentin the disadvantage and allowing the Generals to convert to make it 4-3 with 24 seconds left.

However, the IceDogs managed to score on the empty net as Agozzino picked up his second of the game to make it 5-3, giving Niagara a 2-1 series lead over the Generals heading into game four.

Game four of the Eastern Conference Semifinal will take place this Wednesday, Apr. 13 at 7:05 p.m. at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa.

The Niagara IceDogs defeated the Oshawa Generals by a score of 6-1 to take a 3-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Semifinal Wednesday night in Oshawa.

Jason Wilson, Ryan Strome and Dougie Hamilton combined for 12 points while Mark Visentin played yet another stellar game between the pipes to lead the 'Dogs to victory.

Darren Archibald also scored a highlight-reel between-the-legs goal, proving he has the pazzaz to go along with the grit and physicality.

Wilson had a solid first period as he opened the scoring at the 5:52 mark for his third of the playoffs with the assist going to Freddie Hamilton.

Generals top prospect Boone Jenner, who has ran into some penalty troubles throughout the series, took a minor for high sticking at the 8:42 mark, allowing Wilson to follow up with his second of the period with the help of Steven Shipley and David Pacan, increasing the IceDogs lead to 2-0.

Oshawa's penalty troubles continued throughout the first as they took three more minors, but managed to kill them off to keep the score 2-0 IceDogs going into the first intermission.

Both teams ran into penalty troubles in the second, but the IceDogs were the only to convert with the man advantage as Dougie Hamilton potted his second goal of the post-season at the 11:29 mark to put Niagara up 3-0.

Freddie Hamilton picked up his second assist of the night on the play while Ryan Strome also added a helper.

The remainder of the period was scoreless, but Christian Thomas took a tripping minor at the 19:08 mark, leaving the 'Dogs with 1:12 on the power play to start the third period.

The score remained 3-0 IceDogs after 40 minutes of play.

After serving the remainder of his penalty, Christian Thomas put his team on the board at the 4:09 mark of the third with his eighth tally of the playoffs from Lucas Lessio and Tony DeHart.

The goal wouldn't take them too far as Darren Archibald answered right back (also with his eighth of the playoffs) under a minute later, while Ryan Strome grabbed his fifth by pouncing on a rebound at the 6:23 mark to make it 5-1. Freddie Hamilton and Wilson added helpers to both pick up their third points of the night.

Later in the frame, the rough stuff picked up and eventually Jason Wilson took liberties against Scott Sabourin who laid a massive hit on Milan Doudera. Both players received fighting majors while Wilson received an instigator and misconduct. Andy Andreoff was also handed a misconduct on the play.

Following he fight, Scott Laughton hammered Darren Archibald from behind and received a five minute check from behind penalty along with a game misconduct to put Niagara on the power play for the remainder of the game.

Alain Berger took an interference penalty late in the game to give the IceDogs a 5-on-3 advantage and Dougie Hamilton was able to capitalize, putting home his second goal of the game to give the game a final score of 6-1.

Niagara's convincing win gives them a 3-1 series lead going into Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal, which takes place this Friday, Apr. 15 back in Niagara at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. Puck drops at 7 p.m.

Look for Archie to make some noise at Canucks training camp though. He is 21 after all, and clearly has the size. Could be a cheap replacement for Torres if he can crack the roster. You never know...

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Darren Archibald of the Niagara IceDogs is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 17 and the conclusion of the second round playoffs. Archibald scored four goals with two assists for six points in three games earning a plus-minus rating of pus-5.

Archibald was instrumental in guiding the IceDogs to a five-game series win over the Oshawa Generals in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. He scored the game-winner plus an assist as second star of the 5-3 Game three victory on Monday night, and then scored again in Game four on Wednesday to help the IceDogs to a 6-1 victory. His best effort was on Friday night in the Game five finale where he scored the game’s first two goals including his league-best 10th of the playoffs less than four minutes into the contest and added an assist to pace the IceDogs to a 7-3 win over the Generals where he was named first star of the game. The IceDogs advance to the Rogers Eastern Conference Championship Series for the first time since moving to Niagara where they prepare to face the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors beginning Tuesday night at the Hershey Centre.

Archibald, a 21-year-old from Newmarket, ON, is playing in his third and final OHL season. He currently ranks seventh in playoff scoring with 14 points in nine games after scoring a career-high 66 points in 61 games splitting time between the IceDogs and the Barrie Colts. Earlier this season Archibald signed with the Vancouver Canucks as a Free Agent.

Archibald’s teammate Dougie Hamilton was also considered for the award along with Zack Kassian of the Windsor Spitfires. Hamilton recorded eight points in three games including two goals and six assists, while Kassian scored four goals and two assists for six points in four games. In goal, the IceDogs’ Mark Visentin won three games posting a goals-against-average of 2.33 and save percentage of .940.

This is the powerforward prospect Canucks fans have been wanting for the past few years. Granted Archie is a 21 year old in the OHL, he's still a beast. I'm looking forward to seeing him with the Moose next year.
