Something I recently came across (sorry if this topic has already been started) was the eerie comparison of Winter Olympic Host Cities to the future Stanley Cup Champions. In 1932, Lake Placid New York was the host city of the Winter Olympics. Astonishingly enough, the Stanley cup Champions the following season (1932-33) were the New York Rangers.

In 1980, it was once again held in Lake Placid New York, and the following season (1980-81) was the year that the New York Islanders brought home Lord Stanley.

In 1988, Calgary was host to the Winter Olympics, and.... you guessed it, the following season was when the Flames won the cup (1988-89)

In 2010, we all saw Vancouver play host to the Winter Games.... given how well the Canucks are doing this year, and how they are a definite cup contender, it would sure be strange to see Vancouver finally win the Cup. Pretty weird coincidences don't ya think?

Yes that is true, but they hosted the Summer Olympics. Even so, the comparisons are pretty intriguing.

Hey all, to keep this thread from getting locked, I will attempt to be discreet with what I am asking so the younger posters who may stumble across this thread back out of it not sure what to think.

So I am going camping with my girlfriend and a couple friends in a few days. Now, I know my girlfriend will want to play on the playground quite a few times each day, and we are going for 3 days. However, we will be drinking liquor during these three days, and it might make it hard for myself to play on the playground. That's not the worry though, the worry is, how do I stay on the playground for a respectable amount of time? I've heard from some male friends that liquor makes it easier to stay on the playground longer, but getting to the playground may come sooner than expected. So what are some things I can do to make sure that be-fore playing and the actual playing on the playground doesn't end too soon?

eery. I wonder how many times a city has held the Olympic and not won the Cup next year, just to get a bit more of a perspective on this.

Pretty sure Sapporo Japan didn't win the Stanley Cup in 1973, nor did Lillehammer Norway win the Cup after the 1994 Olympics.

The only team that have the Olympic and didn't win the Cup:

1984 Summer Olympic City Host: Los Angeles
Los Angeles Kings at that time from 1984 to 1986 didn't win the cup

Here something really interesting:

Salt Lake City 2002
The nearest NHL team from the Winter Olympic's host city is Colorado Avalanche and they won the Stanley Cup just about 8 months before the Winter Olympic.

Pretty trippy... eh?

But Seriously, here are ALL North American Host years (except Mexico City)

1904 - St Louis hosts Summer Games - 1904 and 1905 Ottawa Senators win a number of times during the Challenge Cup era

NHL Era 1915+
1932 Lake Placid NY: New York Rangers win Cup
1960 Squaw Valley CA: Chicago Blackhawks win Cup
1976 Montreal QC: Montreal Canadiens win Cup
1980 Lake Placid NY: New York Islanders win Cup
1984 Los Angeles CA: Edmonton Oilers win Cup
1988 Calgary AB: Calgary Flames win Cup
1996 Atlanta GA:, Detroit Redwings win Cup
2002 Salt Lake City UT: New Jersey Devils win Cup

So 4 out of 8

Wouldn't heed to this too much. It seems about a 50/50 split and that's not enough to really rely on.

Atlanta and Salt Lake City really don't count. No teams in those states at those times.

Well it means you have a 50% chance of winning the Cup, which is probably (depending how big of a Canuck fan you are) less than usual anyways ;)

Yes because..... if it was 75/25 we could all go bet our houses on it right lol because all statisitcs always stay true at the end... just saying lol pretty funny that everyones like "well if it's happened in the past that means we are destined to win this year right?!?" Come on now guys, we are going to win because we are kicking ass this year not cause we hosted the olympics

Vegas books have the Canucks to win the cup at 6-1

So 50/50 makes that a great bet ;)

So 4 out of 8

Squaw valley, and Salt Lake City don't have NHL franchises, and Atlanta didn't have one at that time so it would be impossible for them.

So out of the places that had a franchise there when they hosted, it's more like 4/5.

It just seems like this team is used to winning, they're never satisfied with their game, even if when they win. It's something you just feel in the locker room, especially after games. Even when we've played well and won, guys still continue to work. It's pretty impressive.

This year, every time we play a top team in the league, everyone is talking about a rivalry. It seems we have a rivalry with every team these days.

Does anyone in this thread realize Lake Placid is a good 5 hour drive from New York city? New York is hardly a host city. Montreal is closer to Lake Placid than NY.
