Tsunami warning issued in Alaska after 8.0 earthquake:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A magnitude-8.0 earthquake was widely felt in communities along Alaska's sparsely populated Aleutian Islands on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

A tsunami warning was issued for parts of the Aleutian Islands, but Emergency Measures British Columbia says for other areas of Canada and the U.S. on the Pacific Coast, the level of tsunami danger is still being evaluated.

Natasha Ruppert, a seismologist with the Alaska Earthquake Center, said the communities that would have suffered damage are also under tsunami warnings, so people may not have been able to get out and check for damage yet.

The earthquake recorded at 12:53 p.m. local time was initially reported with a magnitude of 7.1, but Ruppert says that was upgraded to 8.0. The quake was centred about 20 kilometres southeast of Little Sitkin Island.

It was recorded at a depth of 100 kilometres, which is relatively shallow for an earthquake in the Aleutian Islands. The shallower the quake, the more likely it will be felt.

The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas between Nikolski to Attu, on the Aleutian Islands. A warning means significant inundation is possible or occurring. Residents are being warned to move inland toward higher ground.

A tsunami advisory was also issued for coastal areas stretching from Nikolski to Unimak Pass. An advisory means strong currents or dangerous waves are expected, but widespread inundation isn't likely.

Update: Officials have determined there is no tsunami threat to B.C.:

VANCOUVER - A strong earthquake has rumbled off Alaska's Aleutian Islands.

There are no reports yet of damage or injuries from the 8.0 earthquake.

Emergency Management British Columbia says there's a tsunami warning in effect for coastal areas of Alaska from Nikolski to Attu.

For other areas of Canada and the U.S. on the Pacific Coast, the emergency centre says the level of tsunami danger is still being evaluated.

So far, both the U.S. Geological Survey and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre say that based on available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami isn't expected.

BT & Deb, Thanks you guys. Fortunately the distance is prob like Kelowna to Van, but it sure makes one realize the power of nature.

The largest 9.0 Tohoku quake(2011) we had strong swaying for minutes, here in Osaka. There are moments in life where all your greatest concerns may become utterly trivial!

I wonder if scientists will ever figure out an angle on how to(accurately) predict these things?
