An elite playmaking MF in Pedro Morales, Waston as that stalwart defender and net front presense, Rosales as the experienced MF, Ousted arriving on the scene as one of the top MLS GK, a physical defense-first MF in Laba, a number of young strikers that seemingly were on the peak of turning into elite goalscorers in Mattocks/Hurtado/Manneh, a bunch of strong supporting players plus a manager with name recognition.... to where the Whitecaps ended up these last few years..... Now just imagine that core, with Phonsie running up and down the wing.... 1

If you look at the players who have all wanted out, it's pretty telling. Kenny Miller, Camillo, Waston.....at some point you have to realize that it isn't the players who are the problem. Add Tim Parker to that list. They screwed up with his contract negotiations that ended with us having to trade him. He and Watson were such a great pairing. How they completely depleted that was once a competitive roster. Didn't even hear about how they screwed Davis of his 10% cut of the transfer fee and give it to the Caps. We haven't gotten a licking out of that money except for Hwang and Cavallini. This is why fans are fed up because management and/or ownership is screwing EVERYONE over. Such a joke of a slogan for this franchise, our city our honor.

Instead of taking that money and investing it in new players, cash essentially stayed in the owner(s) pockets to my knowledge.
UnkNuk
I was looking forward to the "MLS is Back" tournament but, unfortunately, it seems to be turning into a bit of a gong show: "The Vancouver Whitecaps will be missing five players at the 'MLS is Back' Tournament, including forwards Lucas Cavallini, Fredy Montero and Tosaint Ricketts. The club said defender Andy Rose and defender/midfielder Georges Mukumbilwa are also sitting out the Florida tournament, which starts Wednesday and runs through Aug. 11. Ricketts has a medical issue while Mukumbilwa is not cleared to leave the country. Cavallini, Montero and Rose are not taking part for personal reasons." and "Vancouver opens its tournament July 15 against the San Jose Earthquakes at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in the Orlando area. Group B is down to three teams — Vancouver, Seattle and San Jose — with the withdrawal of FC Dallas due to 11 positive COVID-19 tests." https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/soccer/article-vancouver-whitecaps-missing-five-players-at-mls-is-back-tournament/?utm_medium=Newsletter&utm_source=Coronavirus Update&utm_type=text&utm_content=CoronavirusUpdate&utm_campaign=2020-7-7_19&cu_id=t7%2BP3rI%2Bt%2FYx5Iui%2B6yRZxVYYZ6TE%2BGK
UnkNuk
Entertaining game against San Jose. Disappointing, but entertaining. Very entertaining if you like corner kicks. San Jose had 22(!) of them - a new MLS record.
Gurn
The Caps should not have led that game at any time, but being up 2-0 and then 3-1 only to lose is a horrible outcome. Wonder why fans lose interest in teams? Games like yesterday are why. They were beaten like a rented mule on the pitch and then on the scoreboard. On the positive side, I did enjoy a really good laugh when that 4-3 goal was scored. Couldn’t help it. Just burst out laughing so hard. I really felt that losing goal was coming, even when the Caps were up 3-1, so it was quite satisfying to see the end result I was expecting. I can’t really care about wins and losses anymore with these Caps. But once you let go of caring about the results, it’s actually quite entertaining to watch them play these kinds of games. Almost like watching films of car crashes or natural disasters, I guess, but guilt free because the devastation is just in the form of goals and wins/losses, not actual harm to innocent people. 1

Bingo! And there's a good article about the game at the MLS website that concludes: "No match, no matter how enthralling, can be separated from its context. And if you’re among those who think sports simply should not be happening right now, in the midst of a global pandemic that is killing thousands of our fellow human beings with no end in sight, I understand completely. But this night provided a reminder of why billions of people around the world have for decades turned to this beautiful game to get a break from their problems, their poverty, their woe. The Quakes and ‘Caps brought us great joy, and for that, like Almeyda, I’m thankful." https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020/07/16/vancouver-whitecaps-san-jose-earthquakes-match-reminds-us-why-we-love-game-charles?%243p=e_et&%24original_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlssoccer.com%2Fpost%2F2020%2F07%2F16%2Fvancouver-whitecaps-san-jose-earthquakes-match-reminds-us-why-we-love-game-charles&utm_source=TWIM&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=TwimStory3&utm_campaign=MLSTWIM20200716_Schedule_Static&_branch_match_id=301427422275695578

UnkNuk
I bailed after Seattle made it 3-0. It would appear Thursday's game against Chicago is pretty much meaningless which is just as well since it's scheduled for 6:00 in the morning.

The Whitecaps advancing to the knockout stage after bottling their first two games, with only their backup keeper available, without their two best strikers, and by winning a game interrupted by a thunderstorm by exactly the number of goals required has to be the most Whitecaps way of advancing possible.

Apparently eight teams played worse than the Whitecaps in this tournament. But credit to them, they got in to the next level. Now they play Sporting KC on Sunday at 8pm. And I have no opinion on what will happen. Highlights of the game:
RUPERTKBD
A loss on penalties sucks, but I didn't think the 'Caps had a chance. SKC had the better of the run of play, but a bend but don't break defense and a third string keeper, kept a clean sheet against one of the tourney favorites. Hard to believe this was the same squad we saw in those embarrassing losses to San Jose and Seattle....huge props to Thomas Hasal.... UnkNuk
Congratulations to the Portland Timbers on winning the 'MLS is Back' trophy. As for Whitecaps news, the commentators noted the MLS regular season restarts tomorrow. They also said the first six games for each Canadian team may be three games against each other. If so, we'll be getting a heavy dose of Montreal and Toronto in the next few weeks.
UnkNuk
I imagine the Whitecaps owners were looking at the Champions League final with quite a bit of interest: *************************************************************************************************************** Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps will earn €1 million after former player Alphonso Davies won the Champions League with Bayern Munich on Sunday. Davies, 19, helped Bayern lift their sixth Champions League trophy after they beat French champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in Lisbon. Bayern must now pay the Whitecaps €1m due to an agreement between the two clubs when Davies joined the Bundesliga champions in 2018. Following the match, Davies said: "It's something you dream about as a kid. To win the Champions League is everything for club level, so I'm happy that we can do it and I'm happy to be part of this club as well. "It's been a good season all around. I didn't start the season so well, but it's how you finish not how you start, you know what I'm saying." The Canada international has been instrumental in helping Bayern win the Treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League for the first time since 2013; and they became the second team to achieve that twice after Barcelona, who did it in 2009 and 2015. In April, Davies told ESPN that Bayern were capable of lifting the Champions League and he has achieved it in his second year in European football. https://www.espn.com/soccer/vancouver-whitecaps/story/4164965/vancouver-whitecaps-earn-1-million-after-davies-wins-champions-league-with-bayern
