Osama bin Laden to al-Qaeda: 'Don't bother assassinating Joe Biden'

US officials have revealed that Osama bin Laden’s diaries contain the rather startling conclusion that he didn’t think Vice President Joe Biden was worth bumping off (hat tip: a tweet from my New York colleague Jon Swaine).

According to ProPublica, the Obama administration is briefing that Barack Obama was bin Laden’s the “top target” (no surprise there) while “military chiefs like the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the defense secretary” were also major scalps.

But Joe Biden’s scalp (hair plugs and all)? Apparently, not so much. A counterterrorism official said: “There is a note indicating that the vice president is not an important target because that position has less weight.”

To be fair, it seems that Uncle Joe was not mentioned by name and the al-Qaeda leader tied the comment to the constitutional weakness of the vice-presidency rather than the antics of the garrulous current occupant.

But one does suspect that bin Laden might have rather liked to have got Dick Cheney.

Given the manner in which the al-Qaeda chief was sent to his maker, taking out George W. Bush’s veep might have been a prudent measure. As Jay Leno quipped: “Osama bin Laden was apparently shot twice in the face. It looks like Dick Cheney may have been involved.”

Pakistan's sweet revenge: They are sending the US-helicopter to China to have it reverse engineered...

http://slatest.slate.com/posts/2011/05/11/secret_blackhawk_helicopter_pakistan_hints_it_may_let_china_look.html

Pakistani officials are hinting that they may let China take a look at the wreckage of the top-secret U.S. helicopter left behind after the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.

An unidentified Pakistani official told ABC NewsTuesday that the Chinese were “very interested” in taking a look at the remains. A second unidentified official went one step further, telling the network, “We might let them [the Chinese] take a look.”

The comments are the latest move in an ongoing game of political chess being played by the United States and Pakistan, one that is occurring to varying public degrees as officials from both nations use multiple channels to influence public perception both at home and abroad.

Much like most of the tug of war over Bin Laden’s three widows, the suggestion that China may get a firsthand look at the helicopter is taking place in the semi-public reality of an on-background media world, where U.S. and Pakistani officials strike varying posturing without having their names attached to the comments.

It is hard to believe that Pakistan has not already taken a close look at the remains of what is widely thought to be a modified Blackhawk helicopter (the White House has refused to provide details). And given the nation’s close relationship with China, it is possible—perhaps even likely—that Pakistan will eventually share any technological secrets it’s able to discover from the wreckage, regardless of whether China gets its own up-close look.

But by publicly suggesting that nothing is a done deal yet, the comments provide Pakistan with another chance to save face at home by taking a defiant stance toward Washington, while still leaving the door open for the Pakistani government to distance itself from the suggestions as it attempts to win back the support of Washington and keep the U.S. foreign aid spigot from being shut off.

More reason why bin Laden should have been captured alive, if possible. He might have shed some light on Pakistan's involvement in the whole affair and whether or not they were aware of his presence.

I think the involvement of Pak will be pretty obvious to those in the know. You expect them to publicly tell you everything?

It is not my intent to get in circular arguments with anybody. The reason i have avoided saying anything specific is because i know you or someone else will attempt to find an alternate explanation to my points which i intern will have to defend. I see no point in getting involved with the circular argument that is already well under way in this thread. I simply intended to voice my opinion on the subject. In the end either you accept the possibility of corruption and conspiracy or you don't.

Also i find your comments to be very childish. Does taking what i say out of context, paraphrasing and misquoting it make you feel good about yourself? Grow up.

Its sad how child-like pakistan is.

Through out their entire history they've never been able to act like a country with confidence.

I doubt the US is terribly concerned about China getting there hands on the helicopter otherwise they would have done something above and beyond what they did to ensure it didnt get into anyones hands.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A stash of pornography was found in the hideout of Osama bin Laden by the U.S. commandos who killed him, current and former U.S. officials said on Friday.

The pornography recovered in bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The officials said they were not yet sure precisely where in the compound the pornography was discovered or who had been viewing it. Specifically, the officials said they did not know if bin Laden himself had acquired or viewed the materials.

Reports from Abbottabad have said that bin Laden's compound was cut off from the Internet or other hard-wired communications networks. It is unclear how compound residents would have acquired the pornography.

But a video released by the Obama administration confiscated from the compound showed bin Laden watching pictures of himself on a TV screen, indicating that the compound was equipped with video playback equipment.

Materials carted away from the compound by the U.S. commandos included digital thumb drives, which U.S. officials believe may have been a principal means by which couriers carried electronic messages to and from the late al Qaeda leader.

Three other U.S. officials familiar with evidence gathered during investigations of other Islamic militants said the discovery of pornography is not uncommon in such cases.

Whether you despise or love OBL for any reason, you still want him to blurt out all he knows to the world before he croaks. Instead, it remains a dirty secret among those whose best interests are in keeping it so.

CIA director tells workforce to stop talking about bin Laden raid — or face legal action

WASHINGTON — CIA director Leon Panetta is warning his employees that leakers will be investigated and possibly prosecuted after a flurry of reports in the media about the technology and methods used to track and ultimately kill Osama bin Laden.

In a memo obtained by The Associated Press, Panetta told staff Wednesday that the disclosure of classified information to anyone not cleared for it — reporters, friends, colleagues in other agencies or former CIA officers — can endanger lives.

The warning follows media reports that the CIA operated a safe house, as well as new stealth drone technology reported by The Washington Post, to spy on bin Laden’s Pakistani hideout.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen also said Wednesday it’s time to move on and stop talking about the raid.

The New Yorker magazine has just published an extensive recap of the night the US military slipped into Pakistan and killed Osama Bin-Laden and it differs from what the US had been saying about the operation.

The raid on Osama bin Laden's hideout in Pakistan was a mission to kill him, and there was "never any question" he would be captured alive, one of those directly involved has claimed.

The most detailed account so far of the assassination of the world's most wanted man describes the May 1 operation in Abbottabad as a "covert mission into Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden".

Published in The New Yorker magazine, it presents the strongest challenge yet to the Obama administration's insistence that the al-Qaida chief, codenamed "Crankshaft", could have been captured had he "conspicuously surrendered".

An unnamed U.S. special operations officer, said to be "deeply familiar with the bin Laden raid", told the magazine that the 23 Navy Seals were clear that this was not the case.

"There was never any question of detaining or capturing him," the officer said. "It wasn't a split-second decision. No one wanted detainees."

The plan, according to the article's author, Nicholas Schmidle, was for the Seals to "overpower bin Laden's guards, shoot and kill him at close range, and then take the corpse back to Afghanistan".

In May, John Brennan, Mr Obama's counter-terrorism chief, said the commandos would not have killed their target if they were confident he was not carrying an "improvised explosive device on his body" or "some type of hidden weapon".

Pentagon Admits No Evidence of Bin Laden's Death

Pentagon officials recently disclosed to the Associated Press (AP) that they could not find any photo or video evidence to confirm that Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in the Navy Seal raid in Pakistan a year ago.
AP has submitted more than 20 requests for information surrounding the raid on Bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound to the U.S. Government under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

In response to the request for visual evidence of Bin Laden’s death, the Pentagon stated that it could not find any pictures or video footage of the raid itself or of Bin Laden’s dead body. It also told AP it could not locate any images of Bin Laden’s body that were taken on the U.S.S. Carl Vinson, the Navy aircraft carrier that reportedly lowered him into the sea after his death.

In addition, the Pentagon admitted that it could not find an autopsy report, death certificate or results of a DNA identification test for Bin Laden, in spite of claims made by President Obama and reported by CBC News that a DNA test was performed.
These admissions follow a related FOIA response by the Department of Defense in February, in which it stated that it had no emails concerning the Bin Laden raid that were sent prior to its execution.

The Atlantic Wire reported in February that the CIA claimed it had visual proof of Bin Laden’s death, but the Pentagon’s admission that it does not have any evidence of this kind still raises significant questions, since its jurisdiction includes the Navy Seals that conducted the raid and the Navy ship that buried Bin Laden at sea.

The latest revelation drew the suspicion of Lt. Col. Robert Bowman (ret.), the former director of Advanced Space Programs Development for the U.S. Air Force. “It makes the official story sound very fishy,” Bowman said in an interview with Digital Journal. “Without proof, I’m not buying it carte blanche.”

Bowman also pointed to the reports that Bin Laden died in 2001 or 2002, which have been supported by former FBI counter-terrorism chief Dale Watson, former assistant Secretary of State Steve Pieczenik, former U.S. foreign intelligence officer Angelo Codevilla and other intelligence experts. “This smacks of a cover-up,” Bowman added.

Some organizations contend that the cover-up extends beyond the Bin Laden raid, including Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, a group of over 1,600 technical professionals that is calling for a new 9/11 investigation. "The raid is not the only part of the Bin Laden narrative that doesn't add up," said founder Richard Gage, AIA. "It's also highly unlikely that Bin Laden and Al Qaeda had access to plant the explosives that brought down the Twin Towers and Building 7."

Meanwhile, President Obama called for a time of remembrance and contemplation on the anniversary of the raid. "I think for us to use that time for some reflection, to give thanks to those who participated is entirely appropriate, and that’s what’s been taking place," he said on Monday, according to McClatchy News. It remains to be seen how the public will reflect on the lack of credible evidence surrounding the demise of the world’s most wanted terrorist.

They could technically be telling the truth, since this was a CIA mission, and not a DoD one...and FOI's may not be applicable to classified CIA documents.
