The Vancouver Canucks needed a new AHL affiliate after the Manitoba Moose moved to St. John's, N.L., and became the top farm team for the Winnipeg Jets.

The Chicago Wolves required new NHL affiliation after their former parent club, the Atlanta Thrashers, were sold to True North Sports and Entertainment and relocated to Winnipeg.

On Monday what seemed to be the ideal match became official, as the Canucks entered into a new AHL affiliation agreement with Chicago that runs through the 2012-13 season.

"We look forward to this new venture with the Chicago Wolves," Canucks GM Mike Gillis said Monday. "The Canucks have placed great importance and resources in developing prospects and have seen positive results to date, including the likes of Alex Burrows, Ryan Kesler and Chris Tanev.

"The two organizations will work closely to ensure our goals are one in the same and continue to work on developing a strong relationship with our prospects."

The team moving to St. John's wil be Winnipeg's affiliate (consisting of former Atlanta prospects).

We get to keep Canuck prospects like Schroeder, Sweatt Bros., Lack, Rodin, Connaughton, Sauve, Shirokov and every other Canuck prospects from the former Manitoba Moose. Gillis has to find a new home for them.

It would be nice to see them in Abby. Besides the fact that it would greatly ease travel to and fro, it would probably boost the farm team's attendance, when fans have a chance to see the up-and-coming Canucks. It would also allow fans who cannot afford NHL tix, to see some of 'our team'. :towel:

I saw a suggestion last month, that Calgary and Vancouver may share a farm team. Is that a possibility, or too much of a conflict? Obviously, Abby is closer to Calgary than many places, so they aren't likely to give it to Vancouver.

If we get Chicago, I'd like to see them called the Canucks. Well, maybe not. They will need community support, so we might as well not tick the community off.

Would it not be possible to have the WHL Vancouver Giants as our farm team? Or is that just a pipe dream?

I wonder at the possibility of Seattle or environs getting an AHL team... They DID want an NHL team, according to the news stories a couple months ago. This might be a healthy alternative.

"For sure, I agree with that," Hamhuis said of the impact of the Sedins on the Canucks' culture. "The way we handle difficult situations, losing, is very reflective of how they handle it. You never see them get too upset or too down; they're very confident people and that is transferred over to the whole team. When we win a big game, there's not a lot of excitement in the dressing room; it's just what we do. It's what we expect."

This is true, and the possibility of seattle having an AHL team instead of an NHL team, would be a good incentive for the city of seattle to drum up interest and funds to revamp their arena for the purposes of the NHL. Just my two cents.

Most AHL teams are located in the Eastern timezones. Having a team out West (like the Heat) will drastically increase travel costs and really messed up schedules. Unless you're the Chicago Wolves, the Hersey Bears or the former Manitoba Moose, you have to keep cost down to be competitive financially.

i think i remember that gillis said, they had three or several choices to where to put their farm team....they have to decide soon....i wonder if they go into chicago, will they get any spectators? seattle would work on so many levels but can they get into the ahl for next year?....apparently abbotsford is not working out that well for calgary?....

Wait so we get the Chicago Wolves? How is that going to work out?

Surely, we can't have our AHL affiliate in Chicago...our prospects would be blocked from going to the airport if we needed to call them up. They definitely wouldn't get any fan support.

Anyways, the team in St. John's should be named the St. John's Puffins. Or Caribou.
