Making headlines around the world...

Fans get off their anger by rioting

After the Canucks have lost the decisive seventh game of the Stanley Cup Final against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday evening, violence broke out in the streets of Vancouver, initiated by frustrated hockey fans.

Security forces used tear gas and pepper spray against the upset crowd, after several cars had been flipped upside-down and set on fire, as well as downtown stores being plundered. According to the police, the mainly juvenile rioters have been encouraged by hundreds of people. Several arrest had been made. The events were similar to those that followed the Canucks' last elimination from the Cup Final back in 1994.

Celebrations in Boston

In Boston, fans celebrated their first championship title in 39 years, which, according to the police, also resulted in a couple of incidents, although none of them had been severe. Some fans climbed onto cars or bent traffic signs, a couple of arrest had been made.

Thousands of fans marched through the traffic-blocked streets toward the Bruins' home stadium, the TD Garden, accompanied by partially heavy-armed police forces. The statue of hockey legend Bobby Orr, who had helped the Bruins win the Cup in 1970, had been blocked by barricades, because public authorities wanted to keep fans from climbing onto it.

Boston has become very cautious with regard to victory celebrations in recent years, after seven people have died in the last seven years in violent altercations after the New England Patriots (NFL), Boston Red Sox (MLB) and Boston Celtics (NBA) had won championships.

I think the whole organization should step in and do something to help recover from the damage done. A lot of businesses won't get all or any of their damages recovered through insurance. People are injured. City and taxpayers are facing massive losses.

So the Canucks should step in and do something. We all wanted a Stanley Cup parade but maybe we can just do a charity drive, a benefit barbecue or something like that.

I just feel they have been very absent from the scene so far, apart from a faceless statement from the PR department. That's not enough.
