I think it's safe to say that this riot was organized and planned ahead of time. Drunk and high, delinquent males and some females (all lacking morals and brains) got suckered into participating because this facilitated the rioters agenda ... to cause mayhem downtown last night. These anarchists cost the city millions in dollars. I wish that when found and convicted, they could be forced to pay back damages or forced to work the rest of their lives to pay for it.

My hope for the future is that the good citizens of Vancouver, the ones who are responsible, respectful, and love our city, would join together and intervene if ever such a situation materializes again. These rioters/anarchists must be shown that WE will not accept such behaviour. This is our city. Not theirs. They are not welcome. And we will not tolerate them or their behaviour.

I know that's easy for me to say because it requires bravery and selflessness for someone to stand up against weapons, violence and the threat of physical harm, but other people have done just that against mightier foes than these useless hooligans. Let the mob mentality work in our favour!

Anyway, I am disgusted by what happened last night and I just wish there was a way for us citizens to show these anarchist groups that they are not welcome, that they do not speak for us, that we do not want them to speak for us, and they should just get out of our city & country if they are so unhappy and unwilling to live amongst us in peace and as law-abiding contributors to society.

In conclusion, a big F YOU to the rioters (if that's allowed).

If you have photos or videos that might help identify the perpetrators and rioters they can be forwarded per the instructions from the VPD:

The response from the public wanting to help the police identify the individuals involved in last night’s criminal activity has been overwhelming. We are grateful for everyone’s help and have included instructions below for anyone wanting to anonymously share videos with our investigators.

For photos, please send them to robbery@vpd.ca

To anonymously upload videos to the VPD, please upload them to youtube as private videos and share them with robbery@vpd.ca

Here are the instructions on how to do this:

1. Sign in to your YouTube account and upload the video.

2. Once the video has finished uploading, click the Account link located at the top right of any page.

3. Next, click the Uploaded Videos link. Click and choose the video you want to send to us. Then, click the Edit button.

4. Under the Broadcasting and Sharing Options section (on the left-hand side of the page towards the bottom) you'll see Privacy options. Click the little black arrow/triangle to expand and see all your privacy options (if it’s not already open and you cannot see your privacy options).

5. If the video is set to Private, you'll see a section to enter an email. Enter robbery@vpd.ca in this section.

6. Click on Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

The National Post has some high quality images with faces clearly visible - check it out and see if you recognize anyone - if so let the VPD know:

People have also been doing screen grabs of Facebook and Twitter where these morons boast about what they were doing and are preserving them so they can be used as evidence:

After the 1994 riots the VPD set up kiosks with photographs in a number of public areas and people would then ID them. Now I expect this may be done again plus an on-line rogue's gallery as well.

Some parents are going to be for a shock when they see little Johnny out rioting.

Hopefully the courts will be tacking on restitution orders and community service time on any convictions.

Statement by Chief Constable Jim Chu

June 16, 2011

Thank you for coming this morning and I would also like to welcome Assistant Fire Chief Wade Pierlot.

For weeks many of you have been asking us on a daily basis whether we would have a repeat of the ‘94 riot if the Canucks lost.

The stories that were produced were often cringe inducing.

And for weeks we predicted this day, this nightmare, this shame, would never come.

Despite those predictions, behind the scenes we had always been preparing for the worst.

Last night those preparations became a reality as we quickly switched from a meet-and-greet tactic to one of crowd dispersal and crowd safety.

For those who regularly reminded us of 1994, they will also hopefully report that while we had triple the number of rioters last night, we were able to bring the situation under control in half the time it took us back then.

We learned many lessons in 1994 and we will take away more from this experience as we examine every aspect of last night over the coming weeks and months.

Before I get into some of the details of last night, I would like to say how proud I am of our members who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others and do everything we could to ensure that everyone got home safely.

We were not without casualties. Nine of our officers were injured. One officer required 14 stitches to the head to close a wound he suffered after being hit by a thrown brick while he was trying to stop some looters. Another suffered a concussion and some officers were treated for human bites.

I am also very proud and grateful to all our partner agencies that joined us on the street. Officers came from the RCMP and every municipality in the Lower Mainland. Our colleagues in the ambulance service and the fire service also went beyond the call risking their safety to restore sanity to the streets.

I am also aware that many off-duty VPD officers, who may have just completed an earlier shift, saw the trouble on the TV and took it upon themselves to leave their homes, get in their cars and join their colleagues in the streets.

Before I discuss the criminals, anarchists and thugs who were bent on destruction and mayhem, I want to recognize those in the crowd who showed humanity, integrity and courage.

When trouble first broke out at a live site, police tried to wade through the massive crowd to rescue someone who was injured on the ground. A group of citizens within the increasingly agitated crowd linked arms to create a barrier around the injured person so police could make the rescue.

Throughout the night we saw other examples of citizens standing between the looters and the broken store windows.

Our lines were flooded and continue to be flooded today with tips from Vancouverites who want to help.

Doctors in the crowd stepped forward to help with the injured. Our downtown hospitals also performed in an outstanding fashion.

But even with those assets in place, our city was still vulnerable to a number of young men and women disguised as Canuck fans who were actually criminals and anarchists.

These were people who came equipped with masks, goggles, gasoline and even fire extinguishers that they would use as weapons.

We recognized some of the same criminals among them who took part in the vandalism during the Olympics.

This criminal element within the crowd was responsible for the burning of 15 cars, including two police cars.

As you saw there was also extensive property damage and looting.

Our hearts go out to those businesses, especially the small ones, who suffered crippling losses last night. We understand that these types of losses can be devastating.

For those watching in disbelief and shock at home and wondering why police were not immediately arresting the looters, with apologies to business owners who became the victims of these criminals, our plan and our priority must always be the safety of the crowd over the safety of buildings and property.

Our members temporarily left hot spots so they could re-group in larger units to have sufficient numbers to safely encourage the crowd to disperse, and to take assertive action when they wouldn’t.

We gathered at every major intersection to slowly and safely move the crowd out of the downtown core.

I am pleased that the strategy worked and within three hours the worst was over and most of the crowd had gone home.

But I also want to assure our citizens that no one comes into our city and creates this kind of mayhem and destruction with impunity.

We made close to a hundred arrests last night and we have every intention of making many more as we aggressively investigate this incident.

By 5:00 a.m. this morning we had 120 tips on our tip line.

Members of the public are sending us their videos and we are adding those to the thousands of minutes of video we shot ourselves.

We are fully committed to tracking down these criminals and arresting them for their crimes.

I am pleased to tell you that our partner agencies have agreed to make this an integrated investigation so we will be able to bring all our resources to bear in swiftly apprehending those responsible.

I know that the Premier has committed the full weight of the Criminal Justice System to vigorously prosecute those who broke the law.

We understand and empathize with those in our community who are mourning the loss of the Stanley Cup, and those here at home and across our country who are mourning the loss of reputation we have all suffered at the hands of these criminals.

But I now urge every one of us to quickly get past this and help us bring these people to justice. That will truly send a message to the world about who we are and what we believe.

I couldn't get down to help after all, so huge thank-you to all those who did. And thanks Wetcoaster for the updates.. If you don't mind me asking, who is going to pay/reimburse businesses for the damage? Will the rioters be held accountable for the financial part of this?

I didn't want to crawl out of bed today, like I was waking up into a nightmare but I looked at the news and Twitter and downtown is looking great- and all by noon  I feel so happy now.

PS: What's with this Surrey rumour? Is it true those punks came from Surrey?

I have a question. For some of the individuals that were protesters/anarchists or w/e you want to call them, what type of sentencing could they possibly get for lighting a car on fire?

I read somewhere about the head of the vpd saying one of the people they arrested was ( i can't remember the facts exactly) involved in another protest maybe like a year ago and had done damage to multiple cars? If you are causing that much damage quite recently, what kind of penalty are these people serving to still be free and running around on the street? All I know is that if some 'terrorist' lit some car on fire we probably would never hear from him again.

this is very sad, I want Vancouver to be a fun city and this happens.

I like how during the Olympics in order to go to these live city yaletown areas have to go through a checkpoint where they search your bags. Thats an easy way to prevent potential trouble makers from mingling in the crowd.

Security cost is another serious issue. Apparently the provincial government refused to help the city. Perhaps a tax levy should be imposed on playoff tickets and on alcohol served in downtown pubs during the game nights to pay for extra security.
This is disgusting, it really is.

But you can guarantee that its all the bandwagoners doing all the rioting, real fans would applaud the club for what they have achieved this season and even applauded Boston on their victory. This was one of the early pictures posted and tweeted and re-tweeted - sparking rumours of what happened. The photo was originally tweeted by @cwistal around 9PM Vancouver (Pacific) time.

14c70b03-72ca-4a08-a89c-a67a0a0d91a0_500.jpg

Users began to speculate what had happened to the man. Rumours began to circulate, each with different ideas of what had injured the man. Stabbing, beating, and being pushed from an overpass were all mentioned. Some people thought he had been killed.

Global News looked into the incident and discovered the incident occurred outside the Shark Club on Georgia Street. They found some video of the incident.

A video showing what caused the man to fall was broadcast on CBC Television around 11:25 PM local time.

It appears that the man wearing the Bruins jersey shoved another person. He was then pushed to the ground by security guards. As he fell, he seems to have struck his head on the sidewalk. He then appears to be unconscious as people rush to help him.

The video ends before we see whether he got up or left the scene.

By looking carefully at the beginning of the video, you can see that the security guards are from the Genesis Security Group, a large Vancouver security firm.

Global News spoke to David Sukic, Senior Account Manager at Genesis Security.

He said that the incident happened outside of the Shark Club, a sports bar near the intersection of Georgia and Cambie Streets.
