PRESS RELEASE

Nashville would like to welcome the new additions of Matt Hendricks, Michael Handzus and Richard Clune.

Hendricks will give us some real flexibility to our lineup. He's a guy we think we can slot in almost anywhere and he will be ready and eager to prove himself.

We believe Handzus is really going to help round out our center position. His experience and skill is exactly what we were looking for throughout the off season and now we feel we have found it.

Clune we feel is going to have the opportunity to break into the lineup this season. He will add the needed grit and sandpaper that is needed in this league. We're looking forward to seeing what he decides to bring to the table.

We would also like to wish Jeff Schultz and Oscar Klefbom a prosperous future. We are sorry to see both of them go but we feel this was in the best interest of the team and them. Jeff is a real character guy who makes any team better and Oscar will have a bright future in this league.

Nashvilles opening day roster so far.

Torres-Handzus-Stewart

Christensen-Fiddler-Crombeen

Columbus Times Sports Report

As the Blue Jackets begin to fly in for training camp, one can't help but feel a sense of excitement building in the air. After going through a torrent of General Managers in a short time, the ownership settled on Aixtek - a drunken, big mouthed, minor league coach who took a team of misfits to great things in one magical year of junior hockey, then disappeared for a decade (Disney may have made a movie based off of these events, lawsuit still pending); since his arrival, Aixtek has obviously decided to completely rebuild the team and now these are most definitely not the Blue Jackets of yesteryear.

Arguably the biggest and perhaps most exciting thing to look forward to in years to come is the army of draft picks Aixtek has acquired - 20 so far in the first 3 rounds.

"The key to a team that's rebuilding is having a full cupboard. If you have nothing, it's just like drowning slowly" Aixtek said at this mornings press conference. While Columbus fans won't see an immediate impact, you can be sure this teams cupboards will be full for a long time.

Looking to the future definitely seems to be a priority with Aixtek, as one of the teams biggest young stars from last year is also one of the few returning players - Mikael Granlund. "Everyone asked about Mikael, obviously, he's going to be a star in this league real soon," Aixtek told reporters "But unless a good, solid deal comes our way, Mikael isn't going anywhere". Unfortunately, due to contract restrictions, Granlund will have to spend 1 more year away from the NHL. Other newly acquired key prospects that are going to have fans on the edge of their seat in a very short time include Brandom Gormley, Zach Boychuk, TJ Brennan and Sami Aittokallio.

While for the most part, Aixtek seemed to be going after picks and prospects, the biggest name that is on everyone's lips in Columbus is Milan Lucic. This seems to be the new cornerstone in the Bluejackets rebuild. "Lucic is a future Hall of famer and he's just begining his career - what team wouldn't want that? This is the new NHL, you need youth to win." Aixtek also snagged up young guns Vladimir Sobotka and Niclas Bergfors, in keeping with the youth mentality; both are projected to be key role-players in the next few years to come.

There are some new veteran faces that have been added to the Columbus roster over the off season as Ryan Smyth and Brian McCabe get ready to suit up. "Having veteran leadership is key to any team, but we specifically looked at players who could help bring our younger guys into their own. Smyth and McCabe are excellent role models and leaders - both on and off the ice."

And changes have been made behind the bench as well, as Aixtek brought in a new head coach during the off-season, Sergei Pimpnovski, who has kept internet bloggers busy with something to talk about, if the player transactions weren't enough. "This season is about rebuilding, getting the foundation in place for the team to move forward in the future. Columbus fans won't have long to wait to see this team in the playoffs. I think they've waited long enough."

While starting lineups aren't expected to finalized until after camp, one thing is for sure - this is a whole new team.

PREDS DONE???

Since GMEOTM has taken over the team they've gone from not being able to ice a team to a team that will not be contending for the bottom feeder trophy by seasons end. (Perhaps even battling for another trophy) Adding several free agents and a few well placed trades this team seems to be getting better and better.

The question is are they done? Do they have more of a splash to make? My sources are telling me that aside from having several more offers out in free agent land (one no doubt for the biggest players in free agency as most teams do) they are also not done trying to make some trades.

Our sources are telling us that not only did GMEOTM have a mimosa with his bacon and eggs this morning (B5) but he's also possibly shopping a much coveted d-man to bring in a legit number 1 center. Who could the D be? We don't know that yet. I hope GMEOTM doesn't get tripped up in his affection for Jarkko Ruutu...just saying...

Can GMEOTM get even better in just one off season? The man looks like a Greek God and now it seems he's trying to build his team up to the heavens. Time will tell for this man among men.

Washington Capitals acquire Johnny Oduya

DSC_0160.JPG

The Washington Capitals have made what is likely the final move of the offseason in acquring Johnny Oduya from the Philladelphia Flyers in exchange for a 3rd round draft pick. Oduya will be turning 30 years old at the start of the season and has accumulated a couple of dissapointing seasons in a row now earning him a one way ticket out of Philli.

Odyusa stated: "It is really exciting actually to have this new opportunity. I've really missed playoff hockey the past couple of seasons and I am ready to show what I have got on the ice. I know I am a very capable player in this league and think that playing on a team like this will help me prove my worth."

Although these past couple of seasons have not gone Oduya's way, he has enjoyed some success earlier in his career. From 2007 until 2009 Oduya played big minutes in New Jersey and scored slightly under 30 points two in both seasons. He earned himself a role on the 2010 Swedish Olympic team.

da.moose discussed the new acquistion as well: "We have always loved Johnny as a player and believe with a new opportunity in a new organization he will turn it around and once again be a prominent defender. We think we got him at a bargain and can't wait to see how he meshes with Roman Hamrlik. At this time we have him penciled in as a big minute player because we have seen what he can do. This is hopefully not just a one year kind of pick up but instead hopefully Johnny can prove that he can be an integral part of this organization for years moving forward."
