Canada, the three-time defending champions, were destroyed 5-1 by Sweden and looked outclassed. Only goal scorer for Canada was Chicoutimi player Charles Hudon. Top 2012 NHL draft prospect Filip Forsberg had a beauty clapper for the Swede's. USA lost 6-3 to Finland, giving up 5 unanswered goals in the process. Other games saw Russia beat Slovakia 5-2 with top prospect Mikhail Grigorenko picking up a pair of assists, and the home Czechs defeated Switzerland 3-1. An interesting storyline heading into tomorrow's games sees American-born Russian Alex Galchenyuk (also a top 2012 prospect) playing for the USA against Russia. Koekkoek - 3A. USA beats Russia 5-4 in overtime in the game of the day. Russians came back from 3-1 down in third to force OT. Sound familiar? Grigorenko picked up 1A. Galchenyuk picked up 1A. Vincent Hinostroza had the beauty winner with less than a minute to go, his second goal of the game. Clip below. Sweden goes to 2-0 by defeating Switzerland 4-3. Filip Forsberg named player of game for Sweden, picked up 1A. Sebastian Collberg had 2G. Finland humiliated Slovakia 10-2 including 3 shorthanded goals and 3 power play goals. Outshout them 44-17. Teuvo Teräväinen had 2G, 3A. Standings After Day 2 Pool A 1. Sweden - 2-0-0-0 (6 pts) 2. Canada - 1-0-1-0 (3 pts) 3. Czech Republic - 1-0-1-0 (3pts) 4. Switzerland - 0-0-2-0 (0pts) Pool B 1. Finland - 2-0-0-0 (6pts) 2. Russia - 1-0-0-1 (4 pts) 3. USA - 0-1-1-0 (2 pts) 4. Slovakia - 0-0-2-0 (0 pts) Standings go (W, OTW, L, OTL) Once again the Scandanavians come into these tournaments well prepared as a team while the rest try to catch up and win at the end. The Fins have been the best team in the tournament and the winner of that game, unless it goes to OT, will win group B and likely face Canada in the semi's. If Russia wins, USA will be out of the medal round. If Finland wins and USA wins, Russia is out. On the other bracket it's gonna be Sweden 1, Canada 2, barring some huge upsets. Grigorenko with 1A. USA is now out of the medal round. USA beats Slovakia 6-5 in a shootout. Galchenyuk had 1G and 1 SO G. Not a good tournament for the US, giving up 15 goals in 3 games and out of the medals. Sweden beats Czech Republic 5-3 to remain undefeated and win Group A. Czechs were up 3-2 until Filip Forsberg scored 2G and other Erik Karlsson got his 2nd of the game to seal it. Standings After Preliminary Round Pool A 1. Sweden - 3-0-0-0 (9pts) 2. Canada - 2-0-1-0 (6pts) 3. Czech Republic - 1-0-2-0 (3pts) 4. Switzerland - 0-0-3-0 (0pts) Pool B 1. Russia - 2-0-0-1 (7pts) 2. Finland - 2-0-1-0 (6pts) 3. USA - 0-2-1-0 (4pts) 4. USA beats Czech Republic 3-1. Galchenyuk with 1G (GWG), 1A. Czechs finish 6th. USA finishes 5th. Canada destroys Russia 5-0. Hudon continues his strong tournament with 2G, 1A. It sucks to see the U18 Championships played so early in the year when most of our top players are in the playoffs in their respective leagues. I can't wait to see how Mathew Dumba pans out. Denis Kamaev had the goal and the shootout winner for Russia. Finland finishes 4th. Canada avenges their tournament opening 5-1 loss to Sweden by defeating the yellow and blue 4-1 to capture their 4th straight gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament. Canada has won gold 14 of the past 16 years. Amazing. Scott Laughton got the eventual GWG in the second period. Hudon scored the 4th and final goal for Canada, just like he scored their first of the tournament. Brendan Gaunce had 1G, 1A. Sweden finishes 2nd, winning the Silver.
