It depends what you are looking for -

Try some of the street food carts:

Here is the menu:

IMHO it leaves Anton's in the dust. And the decor and ambience is quite nice so a good restaurant for a quiet date.

Comfort food??

Acme Cafe at 51 West Hastings Street - and really good value. Terrific sandwiches and try the meat loaf.

More upscale. Don Francesco's at 860 Burrard has great Italian food. I used to go to Francesco's original restaurant - Francesco Alongi's back in the 1970's and 1980's on Richards Street.

Another really good Italian restaurant that has been around for decades. I would often go for a pre-game meal when the Canucks played at the Pacific Coliseum - Osteria Napoli on Renfrew at 1st Avenue - great Italian food. The veal was always superb. Been a few years since I have been there. Also a romantic date place.

Best Steak - Gotham's - Hy's Encore as sentimental favourite In Seattle try Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. The Shore Club has great steak and superb seafood. Less expensive but still top end steak Hamilton Street Grill

Best Carnivore Outing (non-steak) - Memphis Blues.

Best Restaurant - West - edges out my longtime favourite Bishop's with a new one on the scene Gastropod a close third. Friends recommend Hawksworth. Expect to drop serious change at these places.

Best new style deli - Salt and it is great - incredible charcuterie and cheeses.

Classic Italian - Cioppino’s - try the lunch special of rotisserie chicken and the pastas are superb.

Seafood - C but I am more and more impressed each time I go to the Blue Water Cafe. Also the Shore Club

Classic French - Le Crocodile. Been a favourite of mine for decades.

Indian food? No contest... Vij's at 1480 West 11th Avenue and he has a takeout place next door - Vij's Rangoli.

Something different - Belgian by way of North Africa and arguably one of the best in the City and just blocks away from Rogers Arena. One of my personal favourites - Chambar, 562 Beatty Street.

The Pear Tree at 4120 East Hastings Street, Burnaby is superb. Scott Jaeger is a world class chef with all the awards to prove it. As an appetizer try the Scallops with Bacon Risotto or the "Lobster Cappucino". Main course? They have rotating specials based on fresh ingredients available each day but the Lamb Shank with Scallops and Risotto is superb as is the the Ribeye Steak with Stilton Polenta are signature dishes.

And yeah I do eat out a lot.

BTW a food blog with really good reviews of Metro Vancouver restaurants is Sherman's Food Adventures - a great place to check out restaurants that you may not have heard of as well as many that are well-known:

memphis blues sucks the sauce is crap, the seasoning on the meats is mediocre at best and the meats are so overcooked they turn to mush. i hear all the time omg memphis blues is so good and its the pinnacle of bad bbq. the thing is there are NO good bbq restaurants in vancouver; the only reason you think its good is because you haven't had real bbq. you would think someone would come out with some REAL bbq but no. everything is sushi crap nowadays.

gotta make your own ribs, brisket etc if you want good bbq in vancouver. or find one of those bbq food trucks some of them are pretty good; i can't recall their name though.

I used to get it from a southern dude that cooked it in a remade oil drum next to the sto' and sold shoes at the same time. Pretty sure it was autherntic as well.

And that guy would rock Mephis Blue's world. I mean it's ok but it's not the good stuff.

Cactus Club is the most overrated and overpriced chain in town. 10-15 years ago they were where the kids ate and they catered to that crowd. Then they redid all their interiors and raised the bar a lot in atmosphere and service but its still the same old crapty food but at inflated prices. If you really want a chain restaurant go to the Keg for the same money and get a decent meal out of it.

Also avoid Olive Garden like the plague. They even make their salads bad for you. Where else can a simple plate dish run over 3000 calories and 80 grams of fat. NOTHING on their menu is healthy. NOTHING. Their "heart healthy" meals are not healthy, just slightly less unhealthy than their usual stuff. Go to their website. Read the nutritional information page and gasp in awe at the massive numbers in the calories, fat and sodium columns. Itll hurt your heart just reading it.

I don't know why people keep suggesting Sushi Garden for a good Japanese restaurant.

It is cheap, yes. But the quality has taken a significant dip ever since the expansion, and the food is nothing special. Their fish isn't fresh, and the food taste is mainly composed of House dressing and sauce which completely masks the taste of the actual raw ingredients.

Sashimi, and especially Uni, tastes like your eating a chunk of ice from the freezer, and their kitchen food is usually rushed and sub-par.

If you really want to experience good quality Japanese food without spending a fortune, try Makoto on Rumble and Royal Oak. It is 5 minutes drive from Sushi Garden (Metrotown), and it is a small authetic Japanes Restaurant owned and served by Japanese people.

I can't emphasize enough on the difference it makes when an ethnic food is served by the right ethnic class.

The first thing you notice when you walk into Makoto is the number of actual Japanese clients dining in. That should be the very first indicator of a good Japanese food.

The joint only serves fresh ingredients, and they will NOT serve seasonal seafood that isn't in its proper season. So unlike many of the other restaurants, such as Sushi Garden, who serves overly-frozen packed instant seafood, you know you're getting fresh and good quality food.

Nigiri, Sashimi, and Makis are all exceptional, and they do not need to use horse-load of "special" sauce because the freshness of their raw ingredients already provide enough delightful taste. However, if you're still a fan of the "fusion" rolls, they do provide a section of special rolls which are as good as a fusion roll can get.

Their kitchen food is also popular, and their Ramen and Udon are authentic... not the salty, MSG drowned kind you get from most other restaurants.

The only downside is, as mentionned above, the restaurant is quite small and it tends to fill up very fast during dinner time. If you wish to avoid the line-up, I suggest you try eating in at lunch hour when they offer bento (lunch) boxes. It is a $1 or $2 more expensive than most restaurants, but it is worth it to the very last penny.

There was this tiny Sushi place I was in the other day, it was across Cambie from Oakridge Mall and had nice big portions for under $10

Was not bad, but I can't remember the name. It was a tiny place though.

If you are in Squamish any time soon, I recommend the Campfire Grill. Best BBQ I've had in a while and it isn't too expensive, and the food comes quick after being slow roasted. The only thing about it is its location. It is this little shack in an RV park, I'd imagine it would be hard to find if you aren't familiar with the town.

And thank you Wetcoaster, you are a food god
