Obama would certainly look pretty good beside Gingrich or (God help us) Santorum. Romney's a populist, but he'd get some of the vote. Santorum would get the Christian right, but that's all. On the other hand, I'd like to think there are enough moderate fiscal conservatives out there that would vote for Paul were he nominated, and there are enough Republicans who really don't like Obama enough to vote just to get him out. I thinks it's his comments on Iraq and gay marriage that are costing him Republican votes.

Edited for clarity.

The people that see Obama that way saw him that way last election too. He still won it handily. He's barely even going to campaign in South Carolina, Arkansas, Utah, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Wyoming and Arizona (etc). He won't spend much time in Cali, Oregon, Washington, New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, Connecticut, Minnesota, etc either, because he knows he's pretty much got those states. It's the others that he'll focus on, and history has told us that Obama can run a very good campaign: he beat Hilary in the primaries (and she probably would have won that election had she been the nominee) and he beat McCain, who was certainly much more appealing across the whole GOP than any of the present nominees.
