Playoff Preview

15 is not good enough…

Last spring, the Philadelphia Flyers were one victory away from calling themselves champions for the first time since over a quarter century ago when the Broad Street Bullies captured consecutive titles in the 1974 and 1975 NHL seasons.

Although the Flyers were disappointed with their Finals loss against a depleted LA Kings roster, they knew that drastic changes were not necessary. Except for a few tweaks, the team decided they would not break up a squad that offered such a strong balance of skill, size, toughness, character, youthful exuberance and veteran experience.

However, it was apparent that the third forward line was a definite weakness and needed to be addressed if the team wanted that elusive 16th “W”.

First, the versatile Jamie Langenbrunner was signed as a free-agent (who played so well over the season, that he has now replaced Jaromir Jagr on the first line going into the playoffs). Then, at the trade deadline, the Flyers added another veteran in Samuel Påhlsson, a role player known for his playoff pedigree.

2012-13 NHL Season – Team Awards

Posted Image

Top Goal Scorer – Daniel Briere [35]
Despite lots of line-up changes in search of chemistry on every forward line, the pair of Danny Briere and Bryan Little was a constant all year long. Briere was a pillar of consistency and it shows in his numbers as he was just barely off a point-per-game mark.

Top Point Scorer – Daniel Briere [79]
Because Claude Giroux was out of action for 8 games due to injury, Briere was able to rack up 5 more points than his superstar teammate. However, that should not diminish the Quebecor’s excellent 79 point season.

Top Defenseman – Kimmo Timonen
Timonen suited up for all but one contest for the Flyers this season as their #1 D-man. He played even-strength, power-play, short-handed and was matched up against the opponent’s best forwards in every game while notching 34 points in the process.

Top Rookie – Sean Couturier
Although Couturier only put up 5 points in 46 games, his resourcefulness proved to be very important during the season as he was used to fill up holes all over the line-up due to lack of productivity or injury. The Flyers are happy with his progress and look forward to him taking big steps in the upcoming seasons.

Most Valuable Player
Without question, Philly’s last line of defense, goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, was the team’s MVP. Bryzgalov was responsible for 45 of the Flyers’ 50 wins while posting a 0.924 save% and a 2.13 GAA. In the regular season, the Flyers go as Bryz goes, and it won’t be any different in the playoffs.

Is this the year?

Canucks fans ask the question every year, and it never happens, but it is a strong possibility for the Philly faithful. However, like any team, the Flyers aren’t perfect.

Strengths:
In addition to the aforementioned stellar goaltending, the Flyers’ depth could prove to be overwhelming for their post-season opponents. This is especially evident on the back-end as Philadelphia boasts two pairings that could be #1 pairs on virtually any team, and a bottom pairing composed of two more “top-4” defenseman.

Weaknesses:
Although Philly comes at you with a balanced attack, the offense lacks top-end talent and has been known to be somewhat inconsistent. To make things worse, the Flyers are susceptible to taking too many minor penalties and paying for it on the penalty kill. For a team that can sometimes have trouble scoring, being undisciplined will be a proverbial death sentence.

X-Factor:
If one of their defensemen is injured or is performing poorly, the Flyers will be quick to play the ace in their hand: last year’s first-round draft pick and future best defenseman of all-time… Brady Skjei. Skjei suited up for 19 games with the big club playing alongside future Hall-of-Famer Chris Pronger and didn’t look out of place at all as he registered 8 points with a +5 rating. #$H0ULD@DR@FT3D$KJ31

Detroit Red Wings Team Awards

Top Point Scorer: Paul Stastny amassed 34 goals and 49 assists for 83 points, twelve more than the next closest teammate Saku Koivu (71) to win this award.

Top Goal Scorer: Paul Stastny and Saku Koivu are co-winners of the Top Goal Scorer award as they were tied with 34 goals each. Saku Koivu has also scored 6 goals in the last five games to end the regular season.

Rookie of the Year: Russian phenom Evgeny Kuznetsov took home the award for best Red Wings rookie in essentially a one-horse race. The two-time WJC finalist recorded 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points and ended the season with a respectable +8 rating. Kuznetsov will be nominated by the Red Wings as a candidate for the Calder Trophy as the league's top first-year player.

Top Defenseman: The team may as well name his award after Nicklas Lidstrom as ol' St. Nick defended his title for the umpteenth time. Lidstrom led all Wings' defencemen in ice-time (1721:48 min), points (37), and blocked shots (98). Nicklas will be (unsurprisingly) nominated as a candidate for the Norris Trophy and is expected to be a dark-horse in voting.

Top Defensive Forward: Saku Koivu has won the top defensive forward for his abiliy to influence the game in his own end of the rink. Koivu was second on the team in PK time (125:34 min), second in blocked shots (37), and second in +/- with a solid +10 rating. Koivu also potted 1 of the team's 2 short-handed goals for good measure to seal the deal.

Qualities of Perseverance and Sportsmanship: To the surprise of many fans, Saku Koivu narrowly edged out the perennial winner Nicklas Lidstrom for this award. When the Red Wings signed Koivu in the off-season, fans and management were warry of the veteran forwards ability to stay healthy. Koivu proved the skeptics wrong as the 37-year old played in all but two regular season games this season in every situation with great consistency.

Player who Displays Gentlemanly Conduct: Team captain Nicklas Lidstrom won this award by a landslide by recording only 6 (!) penalty minutes in 75 games played - all while playing 23 minutes a game. Lidstrom will be nominated by the Red Wings as a Lady Byng candidate.

Top Goalie: Jimmy Howard won the award as the team's top goalie with 29 wins in 53 starts. Howard posted a 2.26 GAA, 0.931 SV%, and 2 shutouts this season to lead his team to the playoffs. With backup Cory Schneider signed for one more year and Howard becoming an unrestricted free agent this off-season, Red Wings management must make a franchise-altering move soon as they must decide who will be their goalie of the future. All this in lieu of the highly probable retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom.

Most Valuable Player: In one last surprising twist, the MVP award will finally find a new home this season as Saku Koivu marginally edged out Nicklas Lidstrom and Paul Stastny in team voting. Saku Koivu scored a career high-34 goals and put up his best point totals (71) in six years, and tied his second best output since 2002-03. While Nicklas Lidstrom is undoubtedly the engine that runs the big red machine in Detroit and Paul Stastny will inevitably become the next face of the franchise, Koivu's impact this season has made a strong impression on his teammates, fans, and coaching staff. When Lidstrom and Stastny both went out for six games due to injuries in the middle of the season, Koivu essentially carried the team during that critical stretch and prevented a monumental collapse. Koivu's durability, versatility, leadership, and clutch performances (7 GWG) were enough to win over the hears and ballots of team voters.

When asked about what it felt like to finally be de-throned of his MVP award by Koivu, Lidstrom had this to say:

"It's a tremendous achievement for Saku and I'm really happy that he got the recognition he deserves. With all the injuries and healthy issues he's had in the past, for him to come in as a veteran and play like he has all season, it's unbelievable. He's such a great leader on and off the ice, and such a classy individual. I'm sure he'll tell you that it's a great honor to be named the MVP of the Red Wings, but we all know that we have bigger and better goals his season. Saku will be tremendous for us in the playoffs. Count on it."

Team Canada's goaltending is weak this year. Looking for Carolina, Montreal, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, or Vancouver to lose in the 1st round.
