The Last of Us

Finished the game last night and I really like ending. Very telling of the human traits.

I also have nothing but high praise for the game's environment which convincingly portrays a beautiful world where the humans are slowly losing their dominance to nature. Crysis 3 has a similar setting but it fails to capture the same level of details that show how nature can impact our society and our stagnant lifestyle.

Gameplay-wise, I just wish they didn't have enemies that respawn right in your face, after you just spent 20 minutes cleaning the place with stealth.

Ellen Page upset with The Last of Us for “ripping off” her likeness

If you've played Sony’s critically-acclaimed PS3 game The Last of Us and noticed that Ellie, the 14-year-old girl you have to escort across a dangerous land, bears a strong resemblance to actress Ellen Page, you're not alone.

Page has noticed it, too -- and she's not too happy about it.

In a Reddit Ask Me Anything, the star of "Juno" and "Inception" was asked about the resemblance and whether she would have been interested in the role had Sony offered it to her. Her answer was pretty direct.

"I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called Beyond: Two Souls, so it was not appreciated," she said.

Beyond, like The Last of Us, is a PlayStation 3 exclusive, which puts Sony in something of an uncomfortable position.

Ellie was actually portrayed by actress Ashley Johnson (who, many, many years ago played Chrissy Seaver on "Growing Pains"). Neil Druckman, creative director at The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog, not only stands by his choice, but responded to Page’s gripe via Twitter:

Ellie from The Last of Us was perfectly played by @TheVulcanSalute. No one could've done a better job. Please go follow her and retweet.

It’s a fair point -- Johnson is absolutely fantastic in the game -- but the similarities between Ellie and Ellen run pretty deep. Early images of Ellie bore a much more striking resemblance to Page. Eventually, her hairstyle was altered, the scar over her right eyebrow became much more pronounced and she took on a stronger overall look.

At the time, Druckman told IGN the reason for the changes was to better sync her with Johnson.

"After delving further into the game’s narrative over the past few months, we decided to modify Ellie’s model to better reflect Ashley’s personality, and also resemble a slightly younger teen more fitting to the story," he said.

Despite the kerfuffle, Page isn't writing off games. She happily talked up Beyond: Two Souls in her AMA, calling the upcoming adventure game an "incredible experience” that helped prompt her to rediscover her gaming roots.

"I played video games more when I was a kid," she said. "I had Sega Genesis and was a HUGE Sonic fan. I also love the NHL games and played them with my brother all time. Then I was super into PlayStation and loved the FIFA games. I recently played my first video game in a while. I played the latest Tomb Raider and really enjoyed it, finished in about 12 hours."

Many games model characters off of the appearances of famous actors/models so the first time I saw The Last of Us without even seeing her for more than a minute a friend and I both thought she was modeled after Ellen Page and we thought she was voiced by Ellen also. Plus at that point I had yet to remember the characters name was Ellie so I just kept referring to her as fake Ellen Page.

^ wow, all I can say is the minute I heard ellies voice I immidietly thought of the "girl from the movie Juno".

As a matter of fact her voice was so similar I thought that she must have been the voice actress, which turned out to be some Ashley Johnson

When I first heard Ellie's voice, I said to my wife, "It sounds like the girl who plays Mel Gibson's daughter in What Women Want." Turns out, that's who it was. FYI: What Women Want is a terrible film. 0/10

I just finished the game. Without spoiling the game for anyone...

This is a game that I cannot stop thinking about. Usually in a game, there is a clear protagonist and an antagonist. In this game, there is no "good guys", just moral ambiguity everywhere. When I look back at everything I participated in, I feel ashamed, but at the same time I understand, but inevitably cannot condone.

I keep thinking back on everything that was said in the game, and what the characters when through, and try to gain a perspective on why they did what they did. I think about whether what was done was out of obligation, altruism, or maybe it was out of despair in living in a world that didn't have a purpose. Then again, in a post-apocalyptic world, where everyone lives vicariously draconian, there is no right or wrong...that people weren't worth saving anyways. In many ways, the infected were the most innocent, because their actions were driven only by the survival instinct. In humanity, there's a selfish and selflessness, a benevolence and a malevolence.

I really did love this game. Great ending.
