Mid Season Notes:

The Good- Alex Galchenyuk: Better than advertised, 6th overall pick in the draft is leading the team in scoring with 15 goals and 17 assists through 41 games. That comes out to a 64 point pace if he keeps it up for the rest of the year. A recent promotion to the first line could see him creep into 70 point territory. A cornerstone that the team will be built around, and right now a strong favorite for the Calder Trophy.

Keith Yandle: The Captain has led by example, 5th in points on the team, 1st among defensemen with 5 goals, 19 assists halfway through the year. Locked up to a very manageable 4 year deal, the defense will form around him for the foreseeable future, next year could see him with a new partner in youngster Oliver Ekmann-Larsson. The young Swede is not far behind Yandle's pace with 20 points in 41 games. This offensive outbreak is why many teams in the offseason tried to get him, however he will be locked up to a long term deal in the summer.

The Bad- The Record: Standing 20-21-2 midway through the year leaves this young team currently out of the playoffs and looking for a high pick in the 2013 draft. A less than potent offense and lack of star players to go to in crunch time are 2 of the many reasons for the team's poor record. Another reason is backup goaltender Marty Turco. The veteran was brought in to relieve Mike Smith, but hasn't done that, losing his first 3 starts and failing to earn a win until the team's most recent game. Smith will now be pressured with going every night if the 'Yotes are to make it to the playoffs.

Brooks Orpik is a defender brought in to mentor youngsters on the team, however he has had to do that from the bench as his play has never earned him more than 3rd pairing minutes and has only 1 assist so far in the year. Rumor is he wants a fresh start with a contender and management will look to move him before the deadline.

Los Angeles Kings Mid-Season Report

Since BananaMash was re-hired into the league, the Los Angeles Kings have seen major changes. The top and bottom six were nearly completely retooled. We're going to look at the moves made up to this point by BananaMash, and highlight the positives and negatives of the Kings season thus far.

small_up_arrow_icon.gifThe Top Six: The top six has been moved from the Richards era, to the new Gagner era. The new first line of Mike Cammalleri - Sam Gagner - Bobby Ryan has a combined point total of 87. This number may seem small. but the majority have come since Richards has been moved. Gagner is also playing at nearly a point per game pace since becoming the number one centre in Los Angeles.

Though the second line is streaky, they are nothing to scoff at. Johansson has been producing very well since coming to Los Angeles, and his precense has ignited Tyler Kennedy who is having a bit of problem adjusting to left win. Peter Mueller is currently the teams 5th highest producing skater, and fourth among Los Angeles forwards.

down-arrow-icon.gifThe Bottom Six: Although Rich Peverly is having a fantastic season for Los Angeles the rest has been somewhat of a revolving door. Wellwood has been decent, but inconsistant. The pickups of Arnott and Fedetanko have only managed a point a piece since being signed by Los Angeles about twenty games ago. Los Angeles hopes newcomer Eric Fehr improves the third line and makes it a defensively sound scoring threat.

small_up_arrow_icon.gifThe New Defence: Los Angeles defence is quite a bit different now that BananaMash has taken over. Dennis Seidenberg was formerly the teams number one defenceman, that position now belongs to Brent Burns. Young up and comers Rundblad and Weber have provided quality offence as well.

Rumor has it Mattias Ohlund was but a back up plan by Los Angeles when a trade for a bigger named defenceman fell through. However, Ohlund has been consistantly good since re-entering the National Hockey League.

down-arrow-icon.gifStarting Goaltender: Backstrom has been horrible, there isn't much else to say.

small_up_arrow_icon.gifBackup Goaltending: Garon has played solid in the wake of Backstroms horrid play.

The Verdict: Los Angeles should look to add to its bottom six, and search for a new, possibly younger starting goaltender.

MID-SEASON REPORT

THE GOOD- Newcomers Joe Pavelski and Ryane Clowe have been lighting it up, with 30 points in 37 games each.

- Sophomore Joe Colborne has played very well, while centering the 3rd line with different linemates every few games. With 18 points in 38 games, he seems to be gelling quite well with the team.

THE BAD-Jonas Gustavsson's inconsistent play has dropped the team's chances for making the playoffs. After former starting goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was traded to the San Jose Sharks, Gustavsson's numbers after Bobrovsky plummeted when trusted with the starting job.

THE UGLY- Defender Dennis Wideman hasn't been playing up to par, with only 12 points in 38 games. He's played up and down the lineup and hasn't found a suitable partner. His $4.5 million dollar pricetag means not many teams are lining up for his service
