Music of 2012

Recommended Posts

to be honest, i've never heard anything good about the shins, i've always heard they suck, reaaaaal bad

but the problem was that the shins, essentially, were a batch of mercer's friends, not actual musicians. they had no idea how to play.

but this tour will be different, because he basically kicked everyone out of the band, and i'm pretty sure he has a 'real' band now. modest mouse's drummer is in there!

i'm hoping it'll be good, because i'm seeing them on the 23 myself.

i've listened to SHIELDS about 15 times now, start-to-finish over the last few days. I seriously cannot get enough of this.

Not only is it my favourite of this year, it's one of my favourites in i-don't-know-how-many years. Up there with PJ Harvey (Let England Shake), Girls (all their stuff), Fleet Foxes (all their stuff), The Walkmen (Lisbon), in terms of music that continues to grow on me.

As close to perfect as an album gets. I'd rate it a 9.5, with ease.

Yeah, I've been trying hard not to overhype this album to myself, but its the best album I've heard this decade so far. I can't really think of anything else that I've just felt like listening to released recently.

Also, Tame Impala leaked apperently, I haven't found a link for it yet though.

Looks to be an interesting year.

As some blogs (stereogm) have dubbed it, the reunion of the Class of 2009, with new albums expected/announced from:

The xx

Animal Collective

Dirty Projectors

Beach House

Grizzly Bear

Sure, these bands didn't necessarily start in 2009, but they sure established huge success then.

Albums also to be expected from:

Air

Best Coast

Big Pink

Andrew Bird

Matthew Dear

The Dream

Janelle Monae

Field Music

Fleetwood Mac

Islands

Madlib & Freddie Gibs

Madonna

Mazzy Star

The Magnetic Fields

Morrissey

of Montreal

The Shins

Santigold

Spiritualized

Soundgarden

Sleigh Bells

TI

The Walkmen

Yeasayer

Leonard Cohen

Paul McCartney

50 Cent

Kanye West

Bruce Springsteen

Nicki Minaj

No Doubt

Fiona Apple

Garbage

Swans

No Age (ep)

A Place to Bury Strangers (ep)

Die Antrwoord

Dr. Dog

Perfume Genius

Could be:

Modest Mouse

Dr. Dre

Fleet Foxes

Radiohead

Deerhunter

King Krule

jj

and many, many more

new Tame Impala is really, really, really good

but like their debut, it took me a billion listens to "get"

the two songs in the middle, "why won't they talk to me" and "feels like we only go backwards" are wonderful

there should really be a CDC Music Thread meet-up for a show, D Money seems like he's successful, so he can buy us all drinks

Shields is fantastic. Even better than Veckatimist.

Hmmm...so far some of the best albums of the year have been from:

- Grizzly Bear

- The xx

- Of Monsters and Men

- Chromatics

...But for the bands with only one singer, it's been a severe disappointment.
