[Waivers] Ty Conklin

With Jimmy Howard set to return to the Detroit Red Wings' lineup, the club announced Monday that it has placed backup goalie Ty Conklin on waivers.

If Conklin isn't claimed by another NHL team by noon Tuesday, he will be assigned to Detroit's AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.

"I think Ty Conklin needs to play," Wings general manager Ken Holland told the team's web site Monday. "He hasn't really got it going. His starts have been sporadic and I think his play has probably been sporadic. He's played some good games and played some games not so good."

Conklin was on the ice Monday morning at Joe Louis Arena, but was called off prior to the start of practice. He left the arena without addressing his Wings' teammates before practice ended.

Conklin, 35, has struggled and was pulled from his last start when he surrendered three first-period goals in Edmonton on Feb. 4. He has a 3-5-0 record and a 3.40 goals-against average in his second stint with the Wings.

"Knowing Ty, he's going to go and work his rear end off," said Howard, who is expected to start Tuesday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. "He's also excited to play in some games, too."

Joey MacDonald's recent play helped Holland make the decision to waive Conklin a bit easier. MacDonald has won six in a row since being promoted from Grand Rapids on Feb. 3. He is 6-1-1 with a 1.66 GAA and .934 save percentage.

Material from team media was used in this report.

No, it's just that Joey Macdonald is better than he is. Conklin is so done.

Joey MacDonald has played great and Howard is coming back from injury.

They are sending Conklin down to Grand Rapids.

Conks totally lost it this year, sad to see.

Wouldn't be surprised if he retires at year's end.

Go look at Nabokov's numbers in the dump that is the Island. He's been terrific for them.

Seen it coming with how well Mac's been playing and Howie coming back tomorrow night. I just wish Conk's second go around with us was a little better.

If so, you would think the trade would be completed first. More likely that Howard is back from his broken finger he suffered at the hands of the Canucks.
