why did we trade cody hodgson

So that begs the question....why make that deal now? Are you saying Pahlsen will score more than Hodgson? In 5 years time, the Sedins will be back in Sweden and Kesler will be on the decline. Doesn't it make more sense to corral all the offensive threat you can have for this years run? The more I look at this the more I think it was a stupid trade born out of AV's pettiness and his refusal to admit he was wrong about Cody. He questioned the kids character early on and Cody was on the verge of proving him wrong so he demanded Gillis get rid of him. Will Kassian help us this year's playoffs.....yes (even in an indirect way to open ice for the actual scorers), but would Cody have contributed even more offensively over all?.....yes. AV's arrogance may have cost this team the Cup this year if it is once again goal scoring that fails us.

Good long term trade.

But awful awful timing.

I don't think you can argue this deal on hockey merits. Hodgson brings so much to the table. The Sabres are a far better team since before the trade deadline and it is all trade related. Foligno and Tropp have been way better in Kassian's role than Kassian was. Sulzer has provided some D-stability and getting rid of Gragnani for him was a great move. Gragnani wasn't doing much.

Hodgson is getting big minutes in Buffalo and he has actually been pretty good in his own end. In tight games with the playoffs on the line he is on the ice late in games. He was great to finish off the win the other night with hard work leading to the empty netter.

There had to be an underlying reason for the move because anytime you give up on an ELC player who is your fourth leading scorer with limited minutes it is going to seem strange.

How important would Hodgson be now that the teams best player and leading goal scorer is out indefinitely?

There are just too many things about it that don't make sense.

Those arguing that Hodgson wasn't a good fit or was a one dimensional player are the same as those saying Ehrhoff couldn't play and was a bad fit. Both look very, very good on a charging Sabres team that is all of a sudden a contender again.

I agree with the 'draft the best available player' theory.

I don't agree with the theories being put out that Cody was a cancer and that he was disruptive to the team as there is nothing but speculation here on the subject.

I also do not agree with the way in which Cody was traded in this day and age of instant communication.

Additionally,Gillis had every option to explain the trade and end any speculation instantly but he chose to say nothing and then chose to put the onus of responsibility on Cody,a rookie.

Stating Cody lied or was some type of villain is irresponsible ,at best.

Yes,the Canucks had every right to trade him and it appears it may end up as a fair trade,in time.

The issue to me is the Canucks .org state they are this progressive team with unique,'out of the box' incentives with programs/facilities/culture to attract players into this market and yet the manner in which Cody was dealt is not keeping with the front they are promoting.

It was lacking accountability and class.

I don't think its a no brainer.... They are two different players and offer different things. It is more like arguing between having a checking third line or a scoring third line. "We have no use for Cody" is such a stupid thing to say. He won us many games this year with his clutch and helps our PP. Its not like we have been winning more games with Phalsson over Cody.

Right now our lines would look something like this:

Hodgson - Henrik - Raymond

Higgins - Kesler - Booth

Burrows - Pahlsson - Hansen

Lapierre - Malhotra - Weise

and our PP would look like this:

Kesler - Henrik - Burrows

Edler - Salo

Higgins - Hodgson - Booth

Bieksa - Hamhuis

Far better than this:

Lapierre - Henrik - Raymond

Burrows - Kesler - Booth

Higgins - Pahlsson - Hansen

Weise - Malhotra - Kassian

Kevin had one GWG up until four days ago and both Sami and especially Bieksa play 2.5 X the minutes Cody did, along with major PP minutes on the first line PP.

Bieksa played 26:44 last game.Cody played 12 minutes per game - on the third line plug machine.

Lonny, you berated a poster for exaggerating and yet Kevin had 1 GWG during the time Cody played here, playing top line minutes that were often over two times the game playing time minutes Cody ever received.

Jesus, just give it up already. Why didn't you post the stat comparison before last night? ohhh yea, they both would have had the same amount of points. Oh and why were there no Hodgson threads until now...Maybe because he has done nothing for Buffalo before last night. You fans are so fickle.

And there was a reason for AV not playing Grabner. I like how last year people would bring up Grabner all the time, yet this season when he came back to earth, no one has really mentioned him. He is making 3 million a year now on a long contract and is a soft player playing inconsistently. And you would you want AV to play a guy like that, as if the canucks were not soft up front 2 years ago.

You Hodgson homers are so ridiculous. You guys just overlook that this is Kassian's first year adjusting to the nhl. What did Hodgson do for us in his first year? Also, Hodgson is not a 3rd line center and simply didn't fit on our team since we have top 6 centers. You guy's just want instant gratification and just because this trade didn't help us out instantly, you are all crying like a bunch of babies.

Grow up and give the trade some time. I'm sick of hearing this whining whenever a player we traded starts playing well. You guys did it with Grabner last year and now you'll be doing it with Hodgson whenever he has a good game. As soon as they stop playing well, you all run away.

You Suck!

Why the hell did we make the trade if he's not going to make an immediate impact, that was the whole point of this trade was supposedly he brought all this grit and intimidation and could score and what this team needed for the playoffs. Because it's not about the future of this team anymore it's about winning the cup now not later NOW, so why are we waiting on this guy? Stupid Trade.

Guess what Cody Hodgson had better stats then Henrik Sedin in his rookie year and he had better stats then Ryan Kesler in his rookie year as well, and will be a better player down the road.

Oh and to the post about Cody being a defensive liabilty and he isn't as good defensively as Ryan Kesler, guess what MORON Ryan Kesler was a +1 only in his Rookie year with the Vancouver Canucks, Cody Hodgson was a +8 in his rookie year here, which mean Ryan Kesler wasn't as good defenisvely as Cody Hodgson was in his rookie year.

Cody, his agentS and daddy were creating drama at the age of 22. A 22 year old complaining about ice time is not what this organization needs. The Nucks need TEAM players, guys like Schneider who puts their personal ego and agenda aside for the team. Schneids is 26 and still hasn't complained, what does that say about a 22 year COHO. Under coach AV COHO wouldn't have played much in the playoffs anyways and Pahlsson will be well used.

Great trade by MG, MAG abd Kass will pan out, patience, this was their first full year (asking Canuck fans to be patient, hahaha)

Getting Kassian was the one of the first steps in changing the identity of this team. Every year the Canucks are criticized for being to weak to stand up for themselves and always lack a true tough player who can intimidate the other team and every year they sign some 4th line player whose willing to drop the gloves but beyond that does nothing to be a game changer. We all want the Canucks to play a tougher game but the problem is is that's not who they are as a team. In order to play tough they need to think tough and Canucks don't have enough of those kind of players. As this point they are what they are, a team built on skill with a little grit mixed in and I think the long term goal is to change the team to be a bigger and stronger team with skill mixed in. Unfortunately this will take time so we will likely not see the dividends of this trade for another few years while Buffalo reaps the rewards now because Hodgson is more ready to be a game changer than Kassian is.

Right now Kassian looks a lot like Hodgson did last season, a little passive and not enough confidence to make the big plays that he's capable of making. If the Canucks be patient with him and help him build up his confidence then I see no reason why he can't become the power forward he is projected to be. The skill is there he just has to confidence in his abilities at the pro level.

And Cody's linemates were better than Kesler's.. no? Pretty easy to have a better +/- if your linemates are better than another's. How many of Cody's "+'s" were on the power play.. when "someone else" scored?

And if you think Gillis traded for "right here, right now...".. you need to give your head a shake. It was a trade for "now.. AND the future". Gillis has said all along that was his M.O. He's never been a one shot GM. And personally.. I welcome that.

We were good enough WITHOUT Cody to get the President's Trophy last year, and we're STILL good enough to win the Cup WITHOUT Cody "this" year. You make it sound like all we had were Cody... and a big bag of extra parts.

Cody was a winer.. we don't need winers.

That includes all you "WHY did we trade Cody?" winers. Life goes on... deal with it.

And... if Cody truly is your God and Saviour... then maybe you're just cheering for the wrong team? Maybe you should just join BuffaloSabresDotCom.......
