DonLever
Richmond City Council has approved a new Night Market on Duck island near the River Rock Casino. http://www.vancouversun.com/night+markets+face+this+summer+Richmond/6333285/story.html Interesting news. Can Richmond support two Night Markets? Will this kill the Vancouver Chinatown Night Market? It is complicated but the guy who ran the one on Vulcan Way lost his lease a few years ago, sued, and retained the rights to the Richmond Night Market name. He is now the operator of the new night market.
Common sense
Can Richmond support 2? Yes. given that the new one is right next to a major transit line, I don't see how not. Plus, the old one will still attract people because of its popularity and size. What does this mean for Chinatown? it means a slow fade-away into obscurity as Richmond becomes the new Chinatown...but we already knew that. Phil_314
Can Richmond support 2? Yes. It would be GREATLY welcomed, if anything. That old one is getting predictable (could practically predict which stall is where, and I only go about twice per summer--> imagine those who go every other weekend!) What does this mean for Chinatown? it means a slow fade-away into obscurity as Richmond becomes the new Chinatown...but we already knew that. Is that even news to anyone still? The Situation
I only go there for the food with my Caucasian friends who for some reason find it to be interesting. Everything else for sale is either of low quality, ends up collecting dust in the closet or makes for some tacky decor.

FeStealth
I remember when the Chinatown one encompassed a few blocks, now it's barely fits 1. As for 2 in Richmond? Assuming both are big, it'll be fine, but I get the feeling things will just end up with 2 smaller markets. If there's ample (free) parking, I'm all for it. Dellins
You are right as the stuff they sell there is mainly junk. And there seems to be so many dealers who sell cell phone/ipod cases that you can find cheaper on ebay.I rarely buy stuff there. I just go to walk around and absorp the atmosphere.Maybe there will be free parking at the Vulcan location now since the new location will be offering free parking. I hate paying the $5 they charge. Jai604
I only go for the food, as everything else is more or less junk. Will be nice that it will be near a skytrain station. I live downtown, and the Chinatown night market is dying a not-so-quick death.

Spitfire_Spiky
And having a casino right next to it ought to attract Asians like a magnet.
lateralus
I don't get how the city/law enforcement allows these markets to continue selling counterfeit goods?

The Brahma Bull
Any watches at these markets? I haven't been there before.
forever_hope
The Chinatown one has been declining for years anyways.. I don't even know of anybody who goes there.. I'm guessing the new night market will attract more of the kiddies who can't drive yet because it's close to the Canada line... the other one is pretty bad if you don't have a car, which is why they charge so much for parking there

Common sense
I've seen what looked identical to iPod nanos selling for $15 years ago.
DarthNinja
Believe it or not, in the last several years I've been to the Vulcan Way market, I haven't seen any counterfeits. However, I have seen decent police presence there.
