[Report] Duncan Keith Suspended 5 Games

I'm not saying that the ruling should depend on how good you are. I said that because that's a major blow to Chicago, without their No. 1 Center and No. 1 Defenceman. They fall more in the standings, and they'll play a good team such as the Canucks or Blues in the first round of the playoffs.

Straight up, if Daniel misses 1 playoff game from the Keith hit this suspension is

a) a complete insult, and

b ) should make it once and for all clear that there's significant bias against the Canucks, from the top down to the refs.

And this does nothing but tell the players in the league that - late in the season - it's perfectly cool to go out and headhunt key players that may cause problems down the road. Obviously an actual playoff suspension means you have to actully stab someone in the eye with a knife, or be a Vancouver Canuck - aka Rome (last year). Sh!t, as long as you are incident free, what's stopping any weak team from offering up a 100,000.00 bonus to the dude who can successfully take out a clinch forward before the playoffs? Bu!!$h!t. Total bull$h!t.

Shannie may have done all he could on this one though. I blame head office for this ruling, people with way more juice than Shanahan. He's most def getting all sorts of grief coming down from on high. Me thinks this was just the harshest whack he could get away with.

Wondering why there's no hefty fine though, what's up with that? Should be getting dinged 20 to 50,000.00 at least, IMO, especially since that's about what any prolonged concussive treatment will run in cost to Vancouver. Should be a madatory HUGE donation to the NHLPA at least.

Meh. I figured he'd get 3, so at least this is better than nothing, but it's not a punishment at all. It's a nice shiny rest period for a scumbag that took out our top scoring forward. Bollocks. Someone on the Canucks has to tear off his head if we meet them in the playoffs. Full stop. If front office won't deal out anything substantive to counteract injurious and intentional hits, we're gonna have to. Just sayin'.

Guys, seriously, just stop it, 5 games is a very reasonable amount. You guys think that Keith is some sort of villain out to get Danny out of the playoffs? No way! Keith is an honest, respectable Canadian boy, and one of the few players I actually like on the Hawks. Sometimes the game gets intense, and players are caught in the moment. Daniel had a Hit on him earlier that he didn't like, so he wanted to get back at him, not concuss him. All he wanted was Danny flat on his a$$. Not injured.

This is why we're the most hated team. NHL called it right.

Hate to see this happen but the stage is set for making our playoff run easier.....

next game, and subsequent 5-6 games bring up a goon from the farm team, elbow to the head of each top player on these teams, concuss him for the playoffs, rinse and repeat, said goons suspended for 5 games...meh so what.....

sounds detestable but.....it could happen, happened in the NFL basically and they arent a bush league like the NHL

And you know this how? Or is this just your opinion? If so you really have no right to tell anybody to "just stop it"

I am totally dissapointed with this suspension, as another poster pointed out how can Rome get 4 games for a late clean hit during the SCF and Keith get 5 meanless games at the end of the season for an intentional Head shot. This league and its decisions are mind boggling

This is the list of suspensions of 5 games and above given by Brendan Shanahan so far:

James Wisniewski - 8 games for hit to the head (REPEAT OFFENDER)

Andy Sutton - 8 games for charging (REPEAT OFFENDER)

Dan Carcillo - 7 games for boarding (REPEAT OFFENDER)

Andy Sutton - 5 games for hit to the head (REPEAT OFFENDER)

Jody Shelley - 5 games for hit from behind (REPEAT OFFENDER)

JF Jacques - 5 games for instigating (REPEAT OFFENDER)

Brad Marchand - 5 games for clipping (REPEAT OFFENDER)

Rene Bourque - 5 games for elbowing (REPEAT OFFENDER)

Brendan Smith - 5 games for hit to the head (Never played a game in the NHL at this point - occured in preseason)

What's the common theme for players that got 5 games or more from Shanahan this season? They are either repeat offenders (that are known for dirty hits), or player who have yet to play in the NHL and is trying to make his mark. What differentiates Duncan Keith from these players?

Norris Trophy, Olympic Gold, All-star and most importantly - no previous history. Yet he gets 5 games in his FIRST OFFENSE. The hit was dirty, yes. But would it have been 5 games if Keith hit Dale Weise in the head like that? A Norris trophy winner and an All-star? I doubt it. This is a superstar treatment from the NHL IMO - Keith got 5 games because his target was Daniel Sedin. Think about it - Keith's a star in his own right, and he has no previous record - meaning 2 or 3 games should have been the norm according to Shanahan. Yet he got 5.

I think 5 is quite the punishment for a star player like Keith who has no previous record of suspensions. It would have been extremely hard for the NHL to justify any more than a 5-game suspension considering Keith's status and history. It's only because it was Daniel Sedin that Keith even got 5 games IMO.

So according to the the pattern of suspensions that Shanahan has handed out thus far, this is fair and could even be interpreted as somewhat extreme to a 1st time offender with a 7 year career of clean slates. Keith got 5 games because the NHL is giving Daniel the superstar treatment.

If you have a problem with Keith getting only 5 games, then it's a problem with the entire system. The Canucks got the best treatment out of the system that is currently in place - 5 games is huge if you take into consideration that it is Duncan Keith. Now, had it been someone like Andy Sutton who did this to Daniel, you can bet he gets rest of the season + playoff games. But it's for the NHL to hard to justify to its players that kind of suspension if it is Duncan Keith who has never had a suspension before, other than blatantly stating that this is a superstar treatment for Daniel.

That's the best Shanahan could give to Keith as a 1st time offender and he did that.

Is it enough? No. Daniel's still out indefinitely. Is it fair? No. But that's the best that we could have gotten.

In the end all that really matters is that Daniel recovers, and ideally in time for the playoffs without being rushed.

5 games is... sigh.. appropriate for a previously unsuspended player. This would go over a lot easier if Rome didn't get that unprecedented (and never to be seen again) 4 games in the final for a late hit.
