We all know Gillis has gone thrubconsiderable lengths to make Vancouver a desirable destination for premier urestricted free agents (locker room upgrades, sleep doctor, variety of specialists to give Canucks every edge etc). After the crazy rollercoaster season and playoff run we went on last year it was apparent that we werent much liked or respected around the league. Time and time again comments will be made by current/former NHLrs, media personalities, newspaper columnists that to us Canuck fans just seem like ridiculous attacks (most of the time) towards the canucks (and sometimes its fanbase). There are countless examples i can give and so can many of you, but this thread isnt about that. My question to you people is, has the perception surrounding the Canucks considerably made a real disincentive for future UFAs to sign here? I also thought it was a bit concerning that 3 UFA's were traded this yr (Samuelsson, Sturm, Sulzer) also. But if you take a look back at the NHL players poll this yr, Canucks were tied for 6th in terms of 'what team you most want to play on" (were 2nd last yr). Despite being pin-holed as 'overrated' by the majority (likely Bruins/Hawks/SJS), they are still on the list of team players want to come to. That's a good sign. atillaMYhun Posted March 24, 2012 Share Posted March 24, 2012 One of the things you rarely hear mentioned that works against the Canucks is the travel and the time spent away from home. UFA's tend to be guys who are in their late 20's alot of whom are married and/or have kids. sdnucksfan Posted March 24, 2012 Share Posted March 24, 2012 van was on nash's trade list, and amongst his most wanted some say...noone likes the best but the players like playing for the best...the media is hard on players in van and so are fan expectations but any nhl player worth having doesnt care about the media and can handle fan criticism....as far as attractive goes for a UFA id say were very attractive. thnks a lot to the aquilinis and gillis. And lastly when the going gets tough it seems that on most nights it's every man for himself, which makes players feel unsafe too come here. I think it's a desirable team, if the money is right, and a player wants to play in the playoffs and live in a nice city. However if a player wants to win a cup, feel safe enough to play there game on a nightly basis, and not have to fight and live with getting cheapshoted, there is about 8 options just as good if not better. People automatically assume that just because we're Stanley Cup contenders that EVERY UFA wants to be here. What they don't realize is that there's much more than that when it comes to being on a new team. A lot of players like to lean towards the money on losing teams who have lots of money to spend and are willing to overpay. Any player that is really hungry for a cup, is willing to probably sign for less, and knows that they could be that one missing piece to win it all should find Vancouver a great destination during free agency. Some guys want to be near family, some want more ice time so that may lead them to wanting to play here or elsewhere. Some guys are all about the money so if they can get more from another team they'll do that (Erhoff). Sure Vancouver has lots to offer in terms of being a good hockey town but some guys would rather play in anonymity in a warmer climate where they don't have to be in the public eye every day.
