How does Tanev have 0 offensive potential? He's a great skater and can make a good first pass out of the zone. IIRC didn't he set up Tanner Glass with an open net during the Cup finals? He's calm and smart with the puck; his skating opens up lanes and therefore leads to offensive chances, whether directly or indirectly.
Tanev has the tools to be an offensive defenseman, he just hasn't had the training to use them properly and effectively.
Totally agree, was trying to elude to this in my earlier post. He might not have the assists and goals that some defensemen do, but he's crucial to this teams offensive output.
He starts most his shifts in the defensive zone, yet the puck ends up in the oppositions net at a rate more frequently than Edler, Salo, Ballard, Rome etc etc. Only Juice and Hammer have better 'goals for per/60 min'. He has the 2nd best on-ice corsi on the team, meaning he's best at preventing chances against - then getting the puck up ice to create scoring chances.
The 'potential' isn't just in how many points he puts up, it's in the underlying numbers. Tanevs underlying numbers both 'offensively' and 'defensivly' are sick.
