Armada Posted April 2, 2012 Share Posted April 2, 2012 I don't understand any of the Bettman hate other than maybe its the cool "thing" to do right now? I used to Boo him too but then I realised he's made the NHL really strong like never before. Last year we passed the NBA in attendance average and hockey has never been this followed for a long time. He allowed Winnipeg to have their team back too, yet Canadians on the most part still hate him? He's only made hockey stronger. Am I the only one who feels this way about Bettman? Bill Sikes Posted April 2, 2012 Share Posted April 2, 2012 Hockey isn't a business to many people, it's a way of life, almost a religion, Bettman is viewed as the Jim Baker of that religion, he's taken something viewed as sacred and holy to many, and twisted and warped it into something unrecognizable to longtime followers for his own financial gain. This may be shocking to you, but some people still feel honesty, integrity and quality are more important than profit margin. Many people also feel he is taking Canadian fans for granted, he didn't do SFA to help Winnipeg or Quebec, but spends millions to keep Phoenix in place (didn't he say that no one wanted to own the Jets or Nordiques in those markets, guess what, no one wants to own Phoenix in that market either). He has also committed the cardnal sin of taking away the Saturday night game during the playoffs on many occasions. He represents everything that is wrong with hockey and pro sports in general, greed, corruption, hypocracy, lies, and a total distain for the fans and the sport itself. EmployeeoftheMonth Posted April 2, 2012 Share Posted April 2, 2012 While Bettman has implemented things that have strengthened the league he's also holding it back by trying to make it into something it's not. As fans we paid for that with a lockout to help league parity but really it was to make sure that teams that weren't making money had a chance to compete. That's the black and white of it. There's plenty of grey area as well but essentially it's that many feel he's held the league back more than he's improved it. Some of these teams have worked but then you look at Phoenix and think about how much better the league could be if just that one team wasn't a drain and was rather a real source of revenue.
