Barry: 'We’ve got to do something about these Asians coming in'

Ward 8 D.C. Councilman Marion Barry is on the hot seat again.
Celebrating his victory in the Democratic primary on Tuesday night, Barry spoke up about the prominence of businesses owned by Asians in the District.
“We got to do something about these Asians coming in and opening up businesses and dirty shops,” Barry said in remarks first reported by WRC-TV. “They ought to go. I’m going to say that right now. But we need African-American businesspeople to be able to take their places, too.”
Barry, who won't be opposed in November's general election as he seeks his third consecutive term on the D.C. Council, was unavailable for comment Thursday morning.

Marion Barry complains of Asian-owned 'dirty' shops after winning DC primary

Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry is once again attracting the wrong kind of attention, after he used his election-night victory speech to decry Asian-owned stores.
"We've got to do something about these Asians coming in, opening up businesses -- those dirty shops," Barry said Tuesday night, after winning the Democratic primary for the city's Ward 8 seat and effectively securing a third council term.

Barry went on to say: "They ought to go. I'll just say that right now, you know. But we need African-American businesspeople to be able to take their places, too."
Barry, a mainstay of D.C. politics who has held positions of power in the District since the 1970s, has drifted in and out of controversy since returning to public office following his 1990 drug arrest.
After returning to serve a fourth term as mayor, he was elected to the Ward 8 seat in 2004. He has repeatedly run into drug and tax problems during his latest tenure in office.

When I first glanced at this title I thought it said:

"we've Got To Do Something About These Atheists Coming In"

:)

Back to topic - this councilman should be fired for saying what he said.

McCoy: We were speculating. Is God really out there?
Kirk: Maybe he's not out there, Bones. Maybe he's right here. [points to his heart]

If Marion Barry got re-elected after getting busted on videotape smoking crack and spending 6 months in the slammer, as well as having his fingers in numerous other shady activities, do you really think he's going to be fired for this?

Guy is teflon, and apparently loved in DC,

Wasn't Marion Barry the guy who was called the Mayor for Life in Washington, DC, who served 2 decades as mayor and was sent to jail for 6 months for drug offenses, including smoking crack on a hidden camera?

How come he keeps getting re-elected?

More to the topic, if a white guy says Blacks ran dirty businesses and should be replaced by white business, imagine the uproar. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be right out there screaming and shouting. Telling him to resigned or be removed.

But when a black guy makes a racist remake, nothing ever happens. To many people, only whites are racists, which obviously is not true.

We gotta do something about these crackhead-tax evading-racists coming into office. They ought to go. I'll just say that right now...

Imagine the outrage if this guy were white and he were targeting blacks or any other race with this type of vitriol -- Al Sharpton would tear apart DC, riots would ensue across the states. But he's black so.. listen to the crickets roar louder than Sharpton, this guy likely won't even lose his job / be forced to step down, and hell, could be an admired spokesman at some point for Black Panther. Double standards sure are fun.

Seriously, if I were Barry and my demographic powerbase was parasitic ghetto trash that support me no matter what, I wouldn't want any other group moving in either.

But from a public figure in 2012? What the people in this thread is true, if a white person had made comments like this they would be yanked soo fast from office it'd make their head spin.

Marion Barry has apologized for his comments, sort of.

Marion Barry, "I am very sorry for offending the Asian American community" , with, an "admittedly bad choice of words".

But then he goes on to say, "We are tired of substandard treatment, tired of being kept at arm's length distance, tired of lack of community engagement."

So, there is something behind these "racist" statements. Reading behind the lines, I suppose he means blacks are not treated well by some Asian Shopkeepers.

I think ER's just giving a more honest outsider's perspective.

You don't have to be a genuine racist at heart to be an opportunistic unprincipled trash who will use racism to your personal advantage.

Many African Americans believe that they are still treated as second class citizens even when compared with other minority groups. That belief creates a feeling of jealousy and insecurity when they see other minority groups becoming successful. You can't really blame them though, many white Americans still do treat blacks as second class citizens, even when compared to other minorities.

Nope, there's no excuse for this. This always happens in the States whenever the "new guy comes to town"
