NEW YORK -- Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for delivering a blow to the head of Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg in Game 1 of the teams' Western Conference Quarterfinal series in Nashville on Wednesday, April 11, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 20:00 of the third period. Weber was assessed a minor penalty for roughing.

"We felt this was a reckless and reactionary play on which Weber threw a glancing punch and then shoved Zetterberg's head into the glass," said NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan. "We reached out to Detroit following the game and were informed that Zetterberg did not suffer an apparent injury and should be in the lineup for Game 2.

"This play and the fine that addressed it will be significant factors in assessing any incidents involving Shea Weber throughout the remainder of the playoffs."

The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

I didn't think he would be suspended.

More so because of the erratic nature of NHL discipline than the actual act.
Hockey is the only sport, the rest are just games.

I've never seen anyone pull a move like that before so it is impossible to say whether it is consistent or not.

I guess this is basically a warning to not pull anything like that again.

And of Z suffered a conclusion and out for the playoffs, that would justify a 2-game suspension for Weber?!?

What a ???? joke this league is with these issues...

That's not hockey, it was the most ridiculous blow I've ever seen in the NHL.

I think he should be suspended.

Absolutely ludicrous decision. That was one of the nastiest plays I have seen in a very long time. You could break someones neck and/or concuss them very easily by doing that.

Torts got fined for swearing in his interview, that's a big no no, not for trashing Malkin and Crosby.

The maximum fine for players is built into the CBA (which is what Weber got). The NHL is free to fine coaches and GMs whatever it feels like.

LOL! Who are people kidding thinking Weber would be suspended for that?

Maybe if Weber was a 3rd-pairing plug, like Rome, but he's not. He's an all-star.

Bitz is a 4th line plug. He's far more likely to be suspended. Esp. when Clifford is likely out.

Meanwhile, people are underrating why he went ape on Zetterberg in the first place. He drove Weber's head into the glass from behind. While it was a bit softer (of course, Weber is a horse compared to Zetterberg) and a lot sneakier, it was there. And that's why Weber took exception (to the extreme).

Man, i wish we had Weber on this team. Cheers.

Like the person above said Torts got fined for swearing. Unfortunately Shanahan's hands are tied when it comes to fines so any beef with the amount should be with the people who drew up the CBA. Most likely it was the player's association that bargained for such a low number.

I think he should have been suspended. That's not the kind of thing that should be in the game. What if someone sees Weber was only fined and decides to do the same thing only that time the player gets seriously injured? This would seem to set a poor precedent.

Ludicrous, absolutely ludicrous. It may be the maximum fine allowed but why wasn't there a disciplinary hearing such as the one Bitz is facing that would allow for more supplementary discipline? That hand on the back of the head forcing someone's head into the boards certainly looked like a 'head shot' to me. And it was retaliation. Those who were all over Keith for his hit on Daniel seem to forget that it was 'retaliation' as well. <_<

If Bitz is suspended then there should be a huge backlash from the fan bases everywhere for the blatant discrepancy between these two incidents and the lack of discipline for one vs the other.

I just don't see the outrage on the Weber hits. I think it looks bad but it was kind of in a scrum after he was hit. I guess I'm a bit biased because I'm going to game three in Detroit and would like to see Weber play but I just don't think it was as awful as some do.

Capgeek's twitter calculated something interesting.

$2,500 for someone making $7,500,000 per year, is relative to $16 for someone making $50,000 per year.

Fines are really peanuts to the league's stars.

I am a fan of Weber, but they should have tossed him for at least 1 game. This is not wrestling where you bounce someones head off a turnbuckle. The fine is what it is, but no game suspension is showing the league for a joke.

That said, Bitz deserves at least 3

How 'bout, he was playing it up to see if Weber would be suspended? Cheers.

He should have been suspended for sure. I like Weber as a player but there's no excuse for that play. Maybe Holmstrom sold it a bit, but Weber shouldn't have been pulling WWE moves in the first place.

Ahh, the hypocracy that is the NHL. Shanahan has gone from sheriff to puppet. So much for cracking down on head shots. Imagine if it was Bitz or Rome who intentionally smashed an opponent's head into the glass. Would they have gotten off with a slap on the wrist? Not a chance. So frustrating.

The right call. This was worse than most after the whistle goalmouth crap, but not by much. If you suspend Weber for this then ou have to suspend everyone who throws a punch at someones head in your typical scrum. It was deserving of a roughing pentaly. The fine is just to send the message that the league does not approve. People saying he deserves to be suspended for mulitple games are just out to lunch
