uber_pwnzor
The team acheived nothing under Brian Burke or his little buddy Dave Nonis.
twinsrockmysocks
Gillis' body of work until this season was very impressive. This season he had two issues to address after the scf last year... team toughness and scoring With Erhoff out of the picture and cody trade he certainly did very little to improve team scoring As for team toughness the loss of torres and ryp (rip) hurt a great deal. There could also be soem blame as to why kesler is down to half his production last year did trading samullson and raymonds recovery have a lot to do with this? TheCammer
Firing Gillis would be lunacy. The team has thrived under his rein, we have been able to attract free agents like Hamhuis and resign much of our core under market value. That speaks to cultivating a winning culture that players want to play in despite making less money. Have there been mistakes? Sure, but we have the most competitive team we have ever had and have restocked a farm system that was more than bare due to the Burke Nonis regime. They handed out draft picks like they were handing out gum.
TheCammer
Still: when Burke became our GM we were one of the worst teams in the league. When he left we were one of the better, and this was pre salary cap...
uber_pwnzor
Yes, a little better but with no prospects on the horizon. Burke wasn't terrible he just wasn't great.

GoNucksGo7
Ya lets get rid of the GM that was here for the last 2 presidents trophies. A team that went to game 7 of the Stanley cup final last year. Great idea. Hopefully we can get Mike Milbury. He should be available
luckylager
He won't and shouldn't be fired but he has made a few mistakes ( namely two $4mil players from the SE div who are worth about half that ) and a 12y NTC contract with a 30yr old was a total WTF. But, 2 pres. trophies, cup finals appearance, 3 or 4 div. titles, resigning a selke winner, two art ross winners... Yeah, he totally sucks. Though I'd like to see more scoring depth and less "sandpaper" without hands.

gourami12
Restocked? Our farm system ranking has been plummeting since MG arrived. He's traded away a lot of picks himself with very little to show. The core was all here before Gillis, outside of Hamhuis he's added virtually nothing in the 4+ years he's been here. He's taken the credit for what Burke/Nonis built, that's about it. Worst GM we've ever had, no question we'd have at least one cup if not for him.

tiredatwork
yep, that too! Really, how much of this team's success can you attribute to Gillis being a shrewd GM vs. being in the right place at the right time? One thing you can absolutely give him credit for: higher ticket prices.
Vansicle
The core was so solid this team has succeeded in spite of him, not because of him.
TOMapleLaughs
So if Detroit loses against Nashville, should Ken Holland be fired too? Last place GM's get fired. Not first place GM's. Cheers. TOML

js604
Last year, we had Samuelsson and Erhoff who were playmakers that allowed Kesler to score more goals than he deserved. If Gillis knew what he was doing, he would have traded Samuelsson for another playmaker, instead of David Booth who plays run and gun hockey. This year, the second line is absolute garbage considering the amount of ice time they get. AV now has to put Burrows on the second line, and Booth on the first line to try and undo some damages. Trading away Torres was understandable, because the guy was an uncontrollable pit bull. Erhoff may have demanded too much, but we should have kept him. Gillis' worst offense by far, though, is trading Hodgson for Kassian. His second worst mistake is the long Luongo contract. Overall grade for 2011-2012: C+
