Bieksa Pretends To Be Kesler

So apparently Mike Dunsmore of FOX Sports Radio went up to Bieksa after game 4 to conduct an interview, thinking he was Ryan Kesler (another example of how much our friends down south follow hockey). A dead-pan Bieksa answered questions with this moron for a full 10-15 minutes, all the while going with it and pretending to be Kes. Article below:

(audio clips of the interview are below the article and at this link)

Does everyone remember during the Olympics, when Ryan Kesler was the enemy? And how he claimed to hate Canada?

“Ryan Kesler calmly spit out the words and, a few minutes later, tried to grab them back. Well, sort of.

“I hate them,” said the American winger of Team Canada, the two teams meeting Sunday night in their final preliminary-round game of the Olympic hockey tournament.” (Full link HERE)

At the time, some fans got upset at Ryan, wondering how he could hate a country he made his living in. Most people, however, assumed it was just gamesmanship. When you’re playing in one of the biggest games of your life, you don’t want to look across the ice and see your friends, you want to look across and see the enemy. When you’re flying into the corners at high speeds, you don’t want to be thinking “Oh shoot, that guy is my car pool ride” you want to be thinking “I wonder how much he likes the taste of my elbow.”

But what if Ryan Kesler was saying this during the playoffs when his allegiance to his country was not on the line? What it Ryan Kesler was found out saying that he still hates Canada? What if Ryan Kesler gave an interview to Mike Dunsmore of FOX Sports Radio after game four stating that American fans are better than Canadian fans?

I present to you, the evidence:

“I’m an American, and I like playing in the States. The fans in Canada are great but this is where the real hockey fans are in my opinion. I love the States and this will always be home for me.”

”I can’t say enough about playing in the States. We’ll go back to Canada, I’m sure the crowd won’t be as good there, but hopefully we’ll get back to L.A. where the real crowd is. Growing up in Michigan, I love playing in the States.”

This, well, this is an outrage. How could Ryan Kesler turn on his fans like this? How could a man that is revered in Vancouver simply turn his back on us? I for one…..

Wait, what? Hold on a minute….

This is where it gets fun. Some of you may have noticed when listening to that audio, that that wasn’t Ryan Kesler. Some of you may have noticed when listening to that audio that it was in fact, Kevin Bieksa talking. Some of you may have simply read the title of this article and realized where this was going. Go ahead, listen to the audio again.

Kevin Bieksa, noted Canucks trickster, duped Mike Dunsmore of FOX Sports radio into thinking he was Ryan Kesler. And the best part? Kevin wasn’t even trying to. Apparently Mike walked up to Bieksa, thinking he was Kesler, and Bieksa being Bieksa, just rolled with it, deadpanning his way through the entire interview.

This is perhaps one of the best things I have ever heard. I naturally assumed Daniel Sedin pretending to be Henrik Sedin would be the best trick interview we’d ever see from this Vancouver team, but Bieksa has one upped the Sedins on this one.

The Province’s own Jason Botchford tracked down Bieksa to ask him about the prank and find out why he did it. (Seriously, these are real quotes.)

“That guys an idiot. It’s his own fault if he can’t tell the difference between an all star center and a plug defenceman” explained Kevin Bieksa. “He shouldn’t even be allowed in the room.” Bieksa didn’t stop there, as he continued to rip on Dunsmore “He doesn’t know who Ryan Kesler is. Ryan Kesler won a silver medal for them. I did a full 10 maybe 15 minute interview with him, I was telling how I grew up in Livonia”

I think it’s safe to say the Mike Dunsmore will be studying the player profile pictures of the Vancouver Canucks from now on. I think my favorite part of this story is how excited Mike must have been, thinking he had this major scoop of a star player turning on his fan base. Only to find out that he doesn’t even know which players he is talking to. At this point we are probably lucky Dunsmore even knew it was a Vancouver Canuck he was talking to. I actually kind of hope Cory Schneider works on his Sedin impersonation so we can really confuse poor FOX Sports the next time they do interviews. Imagine the shock on their faces when they think we have three Sedins!

As for Ryan Kesler’s reaction, well apparently he wasn’t too happy answering questions about that story. Not that it is shocking to see Ryan being surly, but you’d have to think he wasn’t too impressed with FOX Sports not even knowing what he looked like.
