Something Wrong With The Western Conference?

The western conference series is going 4-1, 4-1, 4-1, 4-2 while the eastern conference series is going 4-3, 4-3, 4-2, 3-2.

3 of the match ups in the western conference has one team completely dominating the other team in 5 games. The eastern conference has two game 7s and possibly a third game 7.

The east games were much closer in skill it seems.

If by "skill" you mean having 2 sieves show up for the Philly/Pens matchup instead of 35+ saves and or shutouts delivered by the likes of Smith & Rinne every night, then yes.

I also chock it up to the leaders not being able to finish it off at home - Caps/Sens when in reality is was very doable - even the respective coaches said so. The West has better finish and urgency, that is all.

Yep, gonna be interesting playoff watching the "B" teams play for the cup. Like watching paint dry. Gotta love the direction the NHL is taking. Big bruisers, tough men, fighters and wrestler fakes are all ok. finess is not good enough these days. Break backs, give knockout elbows and deliberate attempt to injure (right Keith) in order to eliminate the top teams. Time for a huge overhaul. Reminds me of roller derby.

What's wrong with the Western Conference?

Hitchcock, Sutter, Tippet and Trotz is what's wrong with it.

They are murder to watchable hockey and the playoff results have setback the entertainment value for years to come. There will be imitators galore. Next thing you know guys like Malhotra will go in the 1st round of the draft. Those coaches are the disease.

The cure:

-widen the ice surface to 90-95' (not quite Olympic size but half-way as they're experimenting in Finland) sacrifice 1 row on each side.

-get rid of 1 ref; takes up 25% more space and offers nothing.

-call everything in the book as you're supposed to and give linesmen additional powers to make the same.

-reduce all goalie equipment to something circa late 80's early 90's.

-go back to all wooden sticks (compensation to goalies for the above in form of reduced velocity) the new stuff is pure cr*p and only function they seem to serve is them breaking can force refs to give penalties to hackers that should be penalized anyway if refs were so motivated.

Yep.... I know I'll be watching the eastern conference games instead of boring western conference staleness.... I'm yawning just thinking of low scoring defensive games....how things are changing and not for the best that's for sure.... Go SENS! Go rookie wonder Philly !

First and foremost get some hockey people running the league, suits are necessary, but in lower management behind a desk, not at the helm.

The focus from the league needs to be on hockey, not entertainment, it is becoming more and more like the WWF, start training referees to concentrate on the rules of the game, not game management. Perhaps some of the weaker franchises need to be weeded out so the talent pool is not so diluted which now allows a place for some of the goons that have no real hockey talent.

There is nothing wrong with the Western Conference, this happens in sports, that's why it's so exciting. Any team in the league can play any other team and have a good chance at winning, it's much more exciting than when the Oilers or Canadiens would just thump every team.

As for the comment listing all the things to change in the game, I completely disagree with every single thing you mentioned. None of your comments would actually make the Western Conference better. Reducing to 1 referee would be horrible, there are already enough missed calls. Making the ice size bigger wouldn't make a big difference, sure the zone could be rushed more, but still most goals would come from within 6 feet of the net like it always has been, same with the Olympics. Switching back to wood sticks is retarded, same with reducing the size of goalie equipment, a game does not need lots of goals to be entertaining!

There is nothing wrong with the conference, this year was just a year of upsets, that's no big deal. Some teams are better suited to facing other teams, the Canucks switched to the Kings style of play, unfortunately they had the size advantage, it's no reason to change everything in the league.

We played poorly in the first three games, that's is all there is to it.
