It's not even 20 yet (first Canucks season there was 95/96)

Just to compare, I'll list the arenas from newest to oldest:

Consol Energy Center (Pittsburgh Penguins) - 2010
Prudential Center (New Jersey Devils) - 2007
MTS Centre (Winnipeg Jets) - 2004
Jobing.com Arena (Phoenix Coyotes) - 2003
American Airlines Center (Dallas Stars) - 2001
Nationwide Arena (Columbus Blue Jackets) - 2000
Xcel Energy Center (Minnesota Wild) - 2000
Staples Center (Los Angeles Kings) - 1999
Air Canada Centre (Toronto Maple Leafs) - 1999
PNC Arena (Carolina Hurricanes) - 1999
Pepsi Center (Colorado Avalanche) - 1999
BankAtlantic Center (Florida Panthers) - 1998
Verizon Center (Washington Capitals) - 1997
Tampa Bay Times Forum (Tampa Bay Lightning) - 1996
Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia Flyers) - 1996
First Niagra Center (Buffalo Sabres) - 1996
Bell Centre (Montreal Canadiens) - 1996
Scotiabank Place (Ottawa Senators) - 1996
Bridgestone Arena (Nashville Predators) - 1996
Rogers Arena (Vancouver Canucks) - 1995
TD Garden (Boston Bruins) - 1995
United Center (Chicago Blackhawks) - 1994
Scottrade Center (St. Louis Blues) - 1994
Honda Center (Anahiem Ducks) - 1993
HP Pavilion at San Jose (San Jose Sharks) - 1993
Scotiabank Saddledome (Calgary Flames) - 1983
Joe Louis Arena (Detroit Red Wings) - 1979
Rexall Place (Edmonton Oilers) - 1974
Nassau Veterans Memorial Arena (New York Islanders) - 1972
Madison Square Garden (New York Rangers) - 1968

Considering 18 arenas (over half) were built in the 90's, the Canucks are on par with the NHL average in terms of age in arena. Only 7 teams have arenas built in 2000 or later.

were not in a rush for a new arena. If you've been to Rogers arena you will know what I mean. It's still one of the best arenas in the NHL.

Players Nikolaj Ehlers have been compared too by the fan base of the Vancouver Canucks.

Let's just skip the entire arguement and get to the end of it: 5 cups.

There done.

When you walk into a room, everyone walks out.

80s was a long time ago. Kinda stupid to compare the eras.

Yet they still won't be able to attract quality RFA's... Chris Pronger's wife said she doesn't care if they name the arena after her... She's not living in Edmonton...

Guess I'm the only one who thinks it looks stupid and seriously lame for a hockey arena. Looks like an art gallery or a museum. Also give that thing 20-30 years and it'll look incredibly dated.

I love a traditional looking arena like Rogers or the Colosseum that just screams hockey. Not a big blob of crap that makes you feel you're going to go see some interpretative art...

You're not alone, I think it looks ugly too. Hockey should be played in arenas that look like hockey arenas.

20-30 years ? Try 5-10 - they were trying too hard to create something original, they should have stuck with a safer more classic design.

Once the new car smell comes off it will be ripe for looking odd and dated very quickly. Wonder where they are going to come with the extra 100 million too, which is only the tip of the iceberg because it will probably run way over budget.

And the plot thickens on the proposed new arena:

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=405646

I lived in Edmonton couple years ago and I think city council did this to themselves and Katz holds all the cards and knows it. Like almost all municipalities Edmonton really needs to revitalize their downtown and what better way than a new arena. Katz can always threaten to move the team and lets be honest - as much as it sucks the city of Edmonton needs the Oilers more than the Oilers need Edmonton. With that said I find it ironic a BILLIONAIRE needs public money to build an arena. Then again thats how most people become rich - using other people's money :)

Pretty cool, definitely would look awesome, I love the optimism of the fake buildings that have been added in the future though.

To those that are ripping Rexall it's on of the oldest buildings and they've been trying to replace it for awhile. As someone mentioned Pacific was comparable.

^ Then again thats how most people become rich - using other people's money :)

Ain't that the truth. :bored:

Need to realise that being a billionaire or a millionaire does not always mean you have millions/billions in the bank and all that cash at hand 99% of that money is tied up in assets. so in order to put forward 100million cash they would need to sell of some assets.

add up your net worth and then see what % of that you have available in Cash. everyone is different some people might only have cash as an asset, someone else might have a small business, a house, cars etc.

She should get a heads up.
The wife should always follow the husband if it furthers his career and it is the best interests of the family. She comes over as a spoiled brat devoid of reality coming out with a statement like that. I hope she doesn't bring her kids up like that.

Bill Daly on new Oilers arena situation. “I don’t think concern (for the project) would be the right word”:

EDMONTON - Deputy commissioner Bill Daly isn’t taking sides in the Edmonton Arena debate.

The only thing he and the NHL are hoping for is a good deal that results in a rink.

“I don’t think concern (for the project) would be the right word,” he said during a break in Friday’s hearing with the Alberta Labour Relations Board. “But obviously we’re keeping informed on it.

“The commissioner has regular communications with Mr. Katz. He has been in contact with Mayor Mandel. We’ll continue to monitor; our role is to be as helpful to the process as we can be.”

Despite hitting a very rocky patch in the last few days with Mandel calling on Katz to let the people of Edmonton see what he’s really asking for, and Katz refusing, Daly doesn’t think the project is coming off the rails.

“There’s a lot of issues like this where you get into important, detailed expensive negotiations and you hit roadblocks along the way. Hopefully we’re able to successfully navigate those roadblocks.”

Is living in Edmonton in the best interests of the family?

If the family isn't happy then it's not really in their best interests (or yours), is it? Especially when a player like Pronger (when he was healthy) could get a contract in a number of NHL cities.

Looks really good.

Best arena in the NHL when it's built? I feel bad for New Jersey, Pittsburgh, etc.

Lets first see if they build it like that before awarding them the "Best" NHL arena. Obviously it will be the best if they spend a lot on it and go by the proposed project and the fact that it would be the newest NHL arena.

Edmonton is nicer then so many goofs like yourself give it credit for. Ok I admit that that Vancouver is a beautiful city and is nicer. I've been there. Have you been to Edmonton? I doubt it. What is it either then the fact that its cold makes it such an awful place? 1 million people live in Edmonton buddy, it's a fact. I'm sure Vancouver has plenty of gross areas too. That's the case in every major city.

A state of the art building is going to look pretty out of place in Edmonton.
Granted I haven't been there for a few years, and I'm sure there will be some development around the arena, but it doesn't look like it's going to blend with the rest of the city structure.

I just don't get why one end has to look like a dildo. The whole thing is shaped like a stomach or a kidney or something. I think you can still manage the UFO look without the unnecessary pointy end.

Not mad. Pretty amused actually. Forget it. It doesn't matter. No idea why we're talking about this anyway. Just defending my opinion I suppose which you seem to think is a bad thing. I'll keep my opinion about the city and you keep yours.

Edmonton has a downtown? I lived there for half a year and couldn't find it.

All the same, this is what a new arena is going to end up looking like in Edmonton:

Just heard this on am 1130. Apparently looks like it's going to be much more difficult to get approval for the Arena, and Katz is now considering the possibilities of relocating the team? W.t.F? NO f in way. But nope, not lying, it was on am1130. Apparently Lowe and Katz is not happy and will consider "other" options with one being relocating to another city if they can't get a new arena. In my point of view, it sounds like playing hard to get with the city. I know for a fact, Katz will never do such thing. But threatning actions for sure.

No way the NHL even lets him relocate the team.

A Seattle team would be worth WAY more if they sold it as a new franchise.

This is the lamest bluff I've ever seen by an NHL owner.

And Oilers execs were in Seattle yesterday to tour KeyArena.

Nice little bluff. Very interesting to see if the city will cave to their demands.
