Stephen Harper shouted down for saying NDP didn’t support fight against Hitler

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was shouted down during a debate in question period Thursday on the Afghanistan mission for suggesting the NDP – not yet in existence – didn’t even support Canada’s military involvement in the Second World War.

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair was asking Harper if he intended to extend the Afghanistan mission past 2014 after a Postmedia News report Wednesday said U.S officials had asked Canadian special forces to stay past the withdrawal date.

The prime minister responded the NDP has a pacifistic ideology “regardless of circumstances” and his government would make the right decision for Afghanistan’s security.

“In 1939, the NDP leader didn’t even want to support the fight against Hitler,” Harper said, before being drowned out by cat calls.

NDP MPs gently reminded Harper from across the aisle that the NDP didn’t come into existence until 1961, birthed by a union between the socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the Canadian Labour Congress.

“CCF, NDP, same difference,” Harper responded curtly.

“I guess we can start talking about Reform Party policies,” Mulcair replied, to the delight of the opposition benches.

Thursday’s session of question period also brought up the specter of a debate on abortion.

Conservative Kitchener MP Stephen Woodworth introduced a motion Thursday to create a committee to look into the definition of when human life begins. Currently, human life is defined by Canadian law as beginning when a baby leaves the mother’s birth canal.

Pro-choice advocates say the motion is intended as a backdoor approach to banning abortion.

Harper has repeatedly said his government would not reopen the abortion debate and stated he would be voting against Woodworth’s motion.

The House of Commons will not vote on the motion until at least June.

Harper, who runs a notoriously tight caucus, was criticized by Mulcair for allowing the motion to occur.

Harper said that any MP can table a private member’s bill if they want.

I actually couldn't care less what Harper says in the House, his policies are the only things that matter. This story is pretty dumb. Speakers get "shouted down" in Canada's House of Commons every 5 minutes or so.

Blame the forum, I had enough of wasting 10 minutes to fix formatting after the forum makes it look like it went through came's arse. On the flip side, you could always click the link and read it from the horse's mouth. I'd suggest using Readability to make news articles more readable as well. Fantastic little add-on.

Maybe he should marvel in the past ineptitude of his party before calling the unborn kettle black, I mean is the Avro Arrow still relevant?

While he's at it, he can call out his buddies down south why they stood there and picked their noses while we fended Hitler off.

An NDP surge following the party's leadership convention has put them in a statistical tie with the federal Conservatives, a new poll suggests.
The Nanos Research monthly tracking poll puts the Conservatives at 34.7 per cent and the New Democrats at 32.4 per cent of committed voters, within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The Liberals are at 23.3 per cent, according to the poll, the Greens at 4.2 per cent and the Bloc Québécois at 3.9 per cent of committed voters. Almost 19 per cent of voters said they were undecided.

The poll suggests the Conservatives' popularity slipped one percentage point — well within the margin of error — from a previous poll of 1,203 Canadians conducted in February, while the NDP are up 7.4 percentage points.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's leadership numbers, however, appear to have dropped dramatically. While 31.7 per cent of those polled two months ago said he was most trustworthy party leader, that number fell to 20 per cent in April.

When respondents were asked who was the most competent leader, Harper dropped almost 14 percentage points from 38.1 per cent to 24.2 per cent. And Harper dropped 11 percentage points, from 32.6 per cent of respondents feeling he had the best vision for Canada's future, to 21.6 per cent.

"This is the lowest score that Stephen Harper has ever received in four years," said Nik Nanos, president of Nanos Research.

"He has been the Teflon prime minister. He has weathered a lot of storms and controversies, and nothing has ever stuck to him."

One data point on a trend line

Lately, Harper has been dealing with controversies over fraudulent election telephone calls, which opposition MPs say came from the Conservative Party, and the cost of 65 F-35 fighter jets, for which the auditor general found defence officials hid the cost.

It's important to note this poll is one piece of information on a longer trend line, Nanos said.

"There’s a very unusual confluence of a 24-hour NDP infomercial known as its convention and controversies for the Conservatives at the same time," Nanos said.

"Realistically, we should be waiting to see whether this is the new normal or whether this is a one-off, isolated event."

New NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, who won the party's leadership at the end of March, is close behind Harper on the trust indicator, coming in with 19.5 per cent support. The poll shows 17 per cent of Canadians see him as most competent and 17.3 per cent say he has the best vision for Canada.

Harper remains ahead of Mulcair on leadership scores, Nanos pointed out.

"But Stephen Harper’s competence score has dropped 14 points in a very short period of time."

Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae took 13.6 per cent on the trust indicator, 12.2 per cent in competence and 10.7 under vision for Canada. Those numbers are down about six percentage points across the board.

One-fifth undecided

Canadians don't seem all that pleased with any of the leaders, however: asked who was most trustworthy, 15.8 per cent said "none of them" and 20.6 per cent were undecided. Those answers added together are more popular than any of the leaders.

Asked which leader is the most competent, 15.8 per cent said no one and 24.4 per cent said they were undecided.

As for who has the best vision for Canada, 15.2 per cent said none of them and 27.1 were undecided.

Asked what their most important national issue of concern was, 21.9 per cent of those polled said jobs or the economy, down 3.9 percentage points from the last poll in February.

Another 21.6 per cent said healthcare was of most concern, up 5.7 percentage points. Just over 10 per cent mentioned education, up 4.7 percentage points, 9.3 per cent said the environment, up 2.9 percentage points and 5.1 per cent said high taxes, up 2.1 per cent. Respondents were not prompted with a list of possible answers.

Nanos conducted a random phone survey of 1,200 Canadians 18 and older from April 13-18, 2012. The questions on leadership qualities and issues of importance to Canadians have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The results for the question on which party Canadians would vote for have a higher margin of error because they are based on a smaller sample of 975 committed voters.

Here's a list of some of the choicest tweets in response to the prime minister's Hitler crack:
- The leader of the NDP couldn't even be bothered to stop the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.
- The NDP was the second shooter on the grassy knoll.
- The NDP traded Wayne Gretzky.
- It is well known that the #ndp supported the assassination of Julius Caesar.
- The NDP kidnapped the Lindbergh baby.
- The NDP stole Christmas, not the Grinch.
- The NDP refused to come to the aid of men when Mordor invaded Gondor.

How about...

The NDP stole Christmas, and turned it into "Happy Holidays"?

Is this reverse Godwin's Law?
“When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”-Sinclair Lewis

A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. BTW, in 1939 both the British PM and the American President did not want to go to war with Hitler....

No international socialist organization at that time wanted to go to war with the ally of their ideological leader and role model, the Soviet Union, at least until the Nazis attacked.

Why is Harper’s team invoking Hitler to debate New Democrats?

GLORIA GALLOWAY

OTTAWA— Globe and Mail Update

Posted on

Friday, April 27, 2012 2:27PM EDT

The governing Conservatives are digging back into Canadian history to find a line of attack against the opposition New Democrats, who are surging in recent public-opinion polls.

For two days running, the NDP has been accused of being soft on Hitler – even though the party did not exist until 16 years after the Second World War ended.

When Christine Moore, a Quebec New Democrat, asked during Friday’s Question Period in the Commons if the Conservatives are preparing to keep troops in Afghanistan past 2014, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird recalled that the leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, a forerunner of the NDP, was reluctant to enter the war against Germany.

“The NDP do not support sending troops abroad for anything,” Mr. Baird replied. “Let us look at what the former leader of the NDP-CCF said. ‘I would ask whether we are to risk the lives of our Canadian sons to prevent the actions of Hitler.’ It was the former leader of the NDP-CCF, J.S. Woodsworth, who said that.”

That came on the heels of Thursday’s Question Period when Prime Minister Stephen Harper said much the same thing.

“Unlike the NDP, we are not going to ideologically have a position regardless of circumstances. The leader of the NDP, in 1939, did not even want to support war against Hitler,” he told the Commons.

Of course, the NDP did not even exist until 1961 – as opposition MPs loudly reminded the Prime Minister across the floor of the Commons. “Okay, it was the CCF, same difference,” he replied. “Parties do change their names from time to time.”

Like the Reform Party, which changed its name to the Conservatives, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair responded. Mr. Mulcair suggested that Mr. Harper’s accusations mean it is now open season to go after the government for the policies of its own predecessors.

Even backbenchers have opened up the Hitler line of attack.

On Friday, Nova Scotia MP Scott Armstrong praised the Afghan military mission for ensuring that the war-torn Central Asian country is no longer a safe haven for terrorism and for making a real difference in the lives of the Afghan people.

“The NDP Leader stated this week it does not support this mission,” Mr. Armstrong said. “This is not surprising from the left. In 1939, the leader of the CCF even said: ‘I would ask whether we are to risk the lives of our Canadian sons to prevent the action of Hitler.’”

In fact, Mr. Woodsworth, the CCF leader of the late 1930s, did utter those words. But his party did not support him. He was the only member of Parliament to vote against declaring war. And the CCF National Council supported a Canadian declaration of war.

After Question Period, Peggy Nash, the Opposition finance critic called the accusations “bizarre” and a “historical parody.”

“I didn’t know the NDP had killed Kennedy” Ms. Nash said. But when asked if her party was planning a counter attack, she said no. “I think what Canadians expect is that in Parliament, we’re going to be debating substantive issues and not just slinging attacks at each other.”

Oh?

Judging by the F35 thread and others, if Harper sodomized you, your criticism would be about the size of Steve's dong, rather than the fact you'd just been had.

Perhaps some people need a history lesson. The CCF WERE the NDP in 1940. They basically changed their name to the NDP in the 1960. The CCF were Socialists as are the NDP are today.

Some members of the CCF were against going to War in Europe UNTIL the Soviets were attacked by the Germans.

So Harper is partially correct. The CCF-NDP initally oppose the war. But the general population does not seem to know this fact.

Including the majority of the people on this forum.

From first article. It's not just about being wrong, but the implications of such a statement.

My master (Peace be upon You), my father (Peace be upon You) and my friend (Peace be upon You) what a great gift that is.

From first article. It's not just about being wrong, but the implications of such a statement.

Pretty much.

* I just don't like Munclair, I'd have Harper over him.

Meh, I still support Harper.

I wouldn't have minded Jack but sadly cancer took his life. RIP.

The fact that you support Jack, and Harper shows how little you understand. They are opposing views. You are voting for your views being represented. You clearly seem to think, we are voting for which candidate you like best. NO! The views of the NDP could not be any more opposite!

The Globe and Mail was correct when they said the people who voted for Harper had really no idea about politics, and just voted because they liked a candidate more.
