As with other professional sports economics became a major issue during the Bettman era as teams in smaller markets were forced to move. This especially angered Canadians as two Canadian teams moved to the Unite States. So for the first time since 1996, the last year of the old Winnipeg Jets, there won't be a Canadian NHL team in the second round of the playoffs, with the plucky eighth seeded Ottawa Senators the last one to bow out in Thursday's Game 7 loss. It's now been 19 years since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens surprised everyone in winning their 24th Stanley Cup, capping a run of eight Canadian winners in 10 years. In fact, in the 52 seasons between 1942 and that 1993 win, a Canadian NHL team won the Cup all but 16 times – an impressive 69 per cent of the time. A championship parade in Montreal or Edmonton, in other words, was the rule, not the exception. At this point, the drought has gotten rather embarrassing, especially considering the financial situation of every Canadian team has improved dramatically in the last decade. The seven NHL teams in this country are now routinely the league's wealthiest, paying into revenue sharing for newer markets like Phoenix and Nashville on the basis of lengthy sellout streaks and high ticket prices. Demand has never been higher, despite that lack of winning a Cup, and that in part has brought a team back to Winnipeg and created a movement for two more in Quebec City and the Greater Toronto Area. Thats why he's with the NHL, read about him on the web, lots of stories how he has changed the game for the US market.,,,so much to do so little time. La Mauviette75 Posted April 28, 2012 Share Posted April 28, 2012 or maybe.... it has something to do with the salary cap being instituted in 04.... just because he tried to expand the game south doesn't mean there's a league-wide conspiracy to make canadian teams lose. look: toronto sucks. they're hopeless. same with edmonton. calgary, the senators and the canadiens have some hope, they've made the playoffs in Bettman's years, and they've challenged for the cup. the jets are on the upswing. vancouver is really good (why would the nhl let them be so good, if they just wanted them to lose!? why would they let them get to game 7 of the SCF?). they lost to chicago fair and square in previous years, chocked against boston, and lost to a determined LA team this year. there's no conspiracy. there's fewer canadian teams, and many of them are re-building. they'll be back. People throw numbers and stats around here like yesterdays pizza, but when they read facts and numbers, that pull aside the curtain, they freak out. "Go AMERICA TEAMS GO"..."BALLS" Also watch the games back east and look at how they were officiated and how the Canucks games were officiated, big difference.
