It Doesn't Matter

A little light reading, the facts nothing but the facts.

As with other professional sports economics became a major issue during the Bettman era as teams in smaller markets were forced to move. This especially angered Canadians as two Canadian teams moved to the Unite States. Meanwhile the six teams that remained in Canada have struggled to compete as since Bettman took over as Commissioner in 1993, only one Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup, while no Canadian teams made the finals for a ten year period ending in 2004.Friday, April 27, 2012 2:21 PM EDT

Canada's NHL teams should be better

James Mirtle

A
nd then there were none.

So for the first time since 1996, the last year of the old Winnipeg Jets, there won't be a Canadian NHL team in the second round of the playoffs, with the plucky eighth seeded Ottawa Senators the last one to bow out in Thursday's Game 7 loss.

It's now been 19 years since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens surprised everyone in winning their 24th Stanley Cup, capping a run of eight Canadian winners in 10 years.

In fact, in the 52 seasons between 1942 and that 1993 win, a Canadian NHL team won the Cup all but 16 times – an impressive 69 per cent of the time.

A championship parade in Montreal or Edmonton, in other words, was the rule, not the exception.

At this point, the drought has gotten rather embarrassing, especially considering the financial situation of every Canadian team has improved dramatically in the last decade.

The seven NHL teams in this country are now routinely the league's wealthiest, paying into revenue sharing for newer markets like Phoenix and Nashville on the basis of lengthy sellout streaks and high ticket prices.

Demand has never been higher, despite that lack of winning a Cup, and that in part has brought a team back to Winnipeg and created a movement for two more in Quebec City and the Greater Toronto Area.

No, it means that since Bettman there has been a push to make US based teams win. Thats why he's with the NHL, read about him on the web, lots of stories how he has changed the game for the US market.,,,so much to do so little time.

or maybe.... it has something to do with the salary cap being instituted in 04....

just because he tried to expand the game south doesn't mean there's a league-wide conspiracy to make canadian teams lose.

look:

toronto sucks. they're hopeless.

same with edmonton.

calgary, the senators and the canadiens have some hope, they've made the playoffs in Bettman's years, and they've challenged for the cup. the jets are on the upswing.

vancouver is really good (why would the nhl let them be so good, if they just wanted them to lose!? why would they let them get to game 7 of the SCF?). they lost to chicago fair and square in previous years, chocked against boston, and lost to a determined LA team this year.

there's no conspiracy. there's fewer canadian teams, and many of them are re-building. they'll be back.

You have come over to the dark side... yes the truth is out there all you have to do is read. People throw numbers and stats around here like yesterdays pizza, but when they read facts and numbers, that pull aside the curtain, they freak out. "Go AMERICA TEAMS GO"..."BALLS"

Also watch the games back east and look at how they were officiated and how the Canucks games were officiated, big difference.

Under Bettman, the NHL has seen rapid growth of league revenues, from $400 million when he was hired to over $3.0 billion in 2010–11.[1][2][3] He also oversaw the expansion the NHL's footprint across the United States, with six new teams added during his tenure, bringing the NHL to 30.

However, Bettman has also been in the middle of controversy during his tenure. He has often been criticized for attempting to "Americanize" the game, and expanding the league into non-traditional hockey markets such as the American South at the expense of the more traditional markets in Canada and the Northern United States.[1][4] Bettman was also a central figure of two labor stoppages, including the 2004–05 NHL lockout that saw the entire season canceled.[5] These controversies have made him unpopular among fans around the league.[6]

Expansion and relocation

When Bettman started as commissioner, the league had already expanded by three teams to 24 starting with the 1991–92 season, and two more were set to be announced by the expansion committee: the Florida Panthers and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, who would begin play in 1993–94.[15] Led by Bettman, the league focused expansion and relocation efforts during the rest of the 1990s on the American South, working to expand the league's footprint across the country. The Nashville Predators (1998), Atlanta Thrashers (1999), Minnesota Wild (2000) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2000) completed this expansion period, bringing the NHL to 30 teams. In addition, four franchises relocated during the 1990s under Bettman: The Minnesota North Stars to Dallas (1993), the Quebec Nordiques to Denver (1995), the Winnipeg Jets to Phoenix (1996) and the Hartford Whalers to North Carolina (1997).[16]
