Trading With Toronto. Why We Should Take Their 'cap Dump'

Recommended Posts

Now that Luongo is speculated to be traded, there are a list of teams he'll accept a trade to. The 2 most common teams that are presented in CDC are Toronto and Tampa Bay (rightfully so).

To Toronto: Luongo (5.333)

To Vancouver: Schenn (3.6) + Connolly (4.75)

Why Toronto does this

Goaltending has been a problem in Toronto since the lockout. They had a golden boy in Tuuka Rask who they traded to Boston for Andrew Raycroft and eve since then, quality goaltending has been nearly nonexistent in Toronto. The main goal in Toronto is to make the playoffs, not win the Stanley Cup like it is in Vancouver and Luongo is the best goalie available that can vault Toronto into the playoffs. Schenn is expendable because of the beast that is Gardiner, the general depth on D for Toronto and with the possible signing of Justin Schultz (best friends with Gardiner). Connolly has been hazardous for Toronto, especially at his caphit. The center depth on Toronto is based on chemistry: Bozak, Grabovski, Lombardi, Steckel, Colborne, Kadri and potentially their 5th overall pick.

Toronto's line-up *Apologies for not getting the right line combos

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel

MacArthur - Grabovski - Kulemin

Frattin - Colborne - Kadri.

Armstrong - Steckel - Lombardi

Brown

Phaneuf - Liles

Gardiner - Schultz

Franson - Gunnarsson

Komiserak

Luongo

Reimer

Why Vancouver does this

Schneider is ready to takeover. Schenn is a right handed, big bodied, physical defensemen that was drafted 5th overall for a reason. He's been in the doghouse in Toronto and looks like he could use a shakeup. His stats aren't so delicious, but the Toronto team of last season was simply brutal. He's exactly what the Canucks need on D. The acquisition of Connolly may look like an ugly one because of his cap hit and his terrible season, but it has the potential to be big. Before last season, Connolly was a great second line center when he wasn't injured. He has an ugly caphit, but he's only signed for 1 more year. Connolly provides the second powerplay unit with a natural center, a great stick handler and a sick passer. Excellent for shooters like Booth and Burrows. Connolly provides offense to our third line and is also underrated defensively and on the penalty kill. Connolly also has played wing before so he can be a playmaking option for Kesler's line

Here are a couple of potential lineups

Line up 1:

Trade Alberts and Malholtra for picks or whatever

Sign Gragnani 2 years .900 per season

Sign Schneder to a 4 year 4 million per year contract

Sign Huselius to a 1 year 3 million (really low but what if right?)

This line-up has Malholtra but if we can trade him and get cheaper options, great. Not too much cap room, but that's why Lawrence Gilman has the job he has. Connolly is a little injury prone, so having a cheap player like Ebbet at .500 million would be useful for relief.

What do you guys think?

Sorry, you lost me when you said TO had depth, then you went on to say they have depth at two positions......newsflash: Non-playoff teams that haven't played in the post-season for SEVEN years don't have depth generally, at any position.

Look at their defense with respect to an addition of Justin Schultz who is unproven, but is exactly like Jake Gardiner who happened to be a monster this season. They have depth on defense, no doubt about that, their system under Ron Wilson was just a complete failure. They have depth on center with their upcoming prospects, surely you can see that. They lack a true number 1 center, but that doesn't mean they don't have depth.

I don't understand how people on here think Luke Schenn is someone worth acquiring. Their's only one name on that team i'd want, named Kessel, and that's not going to happen. I'm happy with straight up just not trading with that team. Their full of plugs and underachievers.

I really dislike this deal. Connolly is bound to get hurt again, Schenn isn't the big stud d man many of you on CDC seem to think he is and I still think we get lowballed on this deal and can find better elsewhere.

Oh, and while some of you think i'm crazy on this, I STILL don't believe Toronto is on Luongo's list. It is all speculation by a group of Toronto based hockey analysts.

Luongo will never be a Toronto Maple Leaf. Never.
