As it is salary average that counts toward the cap, properly structured contracts could make it happen. In addition lose Pahlsson, Raymond, Salo, Rome, Ebbett and Volpatti Re sign Schneider, Bitz and Weise. In the end the team looks something like this: D.Sedin - H.Sedin - A.Burrows Z.Parise - R.Kesler - T.Purcell C.Higgins - M.LaPierre - J.Hansen B.Prust - M.Malhotra - Z.Kassian B.Bitz, D.Weise R.Suter - S.Weber A.Edler - K.Bieksa D.Hamhuis - C.Tanev K.Ballard C.Schneider E.Lack I know this will never happen, but as I said previously, if MG were to time it right and put a logical offer on the table, it could hypethetically work. Drop Em Posted April 30, 2012 Share Posted April 30, 2012 Seeing how this past season has gone, it is pretty obvious that some significant changes will be coming to this Canucks team. Though they played well in the regular season, they played significantly lower than they're capable of in the playoffs, which is when it really counts. Some are calling for a major rebuild, I say some tweaking, our window of opportunity for the Cup is still open while the Sedin's are playing well on a consistent basis. I've got some ideas and suggestions that I think could take this team back to where they were last year, but with one extra win. So looking at this roster now, I see some areas we need to improve in:Secondary Goal scoring - While we were among the NHL leaders in goals for, we can't be relying on the Sedin twins, and Burrows for all our offense. While the Americans (Kesler, Higgins, and Booth) played pretty well our second and third lines need to score some more.Size - Our roster is seriously depleted when it comes to size, we have 4 players over 6'3" (Kassian, Alberts, Edler, and Salo) and only one player who is over 220 lbs (Malhotra). 3 of the 5 players (Kassian, Alberts and Edler) will hit constantly each game they play, while 2 of those 3 players (Alberts and Kassian) see the press box more often than not. While we have other players that still hit, it's not usually on a consistent basis.Toughness - Outside of perhaps Dale Weise, I wouldn't say we have that one true fighter that can bring the crowd to its feet and bring up the energy level on the team since the tragic loss of Rypien. Defense - Though we have some pretty good defensemen, considering we were fourth in the league with goals against, I see a need for improvement. Much of the reason for this great statistic is due to Canucks' goaltending, both Luongo and Schneider were outstanding throughout the season. This team needs a solid defensive body that can play at least 75+ games without being injured on in the press box.Leadership - Some nights it seems like the Canucks have no real focus and this stems from a lack of leadership. I don't completely disagree with Henrik being the captain, but I believe someone else should be, Henrik is far too quiet. I think someone such as Kesler, Bieksa, or Hamhuis should be made captain, these guys play like leaders on the ice and lead by examples, working hard every shift they're playing.Diving - This has got to go, while it is part of the game, it brings down the fans and makes the team look bad. We want this team to be attractive to free agents and we should want to play with integrity and honor.Canadians - Our team only possesses about 9 Canadian regulars. Canadians play well, work hard, and know the game. I'm not saying other nations can't play, but I think we should want to promote the Canadian game some more, I feel like it's a major key to doing well. Players that Need to Improve:Kesler - It's evident that he needs to improve and the good part is, he acknowledges it. I see a big, comeback season coming up for him after a pretty significant hip injury and now an apparent shoulder injury. I believe this past season will be a low-point in his career and he'll continue to develop into the player he was a few seasons ago. Though some believe he should be pushed to the third line or traded, I think this is just a down year and this is really how he plays.Booth - Though it was his first season playing here and he may not have been used to playing in a hockey-crazed city like this, I expected more. I also see a big season out of him, he needs to score more and use his body some more against opponents.Kassian - It was quite apparent he didn't play the way anyone expected him to and considering the hype hockey networks put around him. However, he is only 21 and still has many more years to come in which he can mature and become a better rounded player. I believe if we give him another year or two he can become a solid power forward in the NHL for years to come. Roster Moves: Trades: VAN - Roberto Luongo + 2nd Round Pick 2012 + 3rd Round Pick 2013 FOR TBL - Ryan Malone + 1st Round Pick 2012 Reason: It appears Luongo played his final game as a Canuck, and while it saddens me that he may be on the move, I think it's best for him and the team. The fans never seemed to be able to really appreciate what a fantastic goalie he was and I believe he'll be able to shine in another city. As well, his wife is from the Florida area so the move would work. Tampa Bay was a league worse in goals against so its apparent that Luongo's services would be much appreciated. Tampa Bay would also get some draft picks which would be later in the round. For Vancouver, they would receive a player that adds size, toughness, and secondary scoring, exactly what the Canucks need. As well, the Canucks get a 10th overall pick in which they can add a great, young player. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VAN - Manny Malhotra FOR NYI - 2nd Round Pick 2012 Reason: Though I love Malhotra and his leadership, his cap hit is too high for what he provides. The Canucks receive a pretty good pick in which they can pick up a good player, also replaces the pick in the TBL trade, and they also get some much needed cap space. For the Islanders they receive a great faceoff man, that can help take the younger guys under his wing, the team can also take on his space hit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VAN - Keith Ballard + Andrew Alberts + 1st Round Pick 2013 FOR PHO - Oliver Ekman-Larsson Reason: Provides some more needed cap space to the Canucks while puts the Coyotes up to the cap floor. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is a very talented player with a lot of potential, he can fit in on almost any defensive pairing. Keith Ballard will hopefully be able to revitalize his career in the desert while Alberts will likely see some more ice time. The 1st rounder would be the extra piece to get the Yotes to accept the deal, would likely be a late round pick in which they can get some good, young talent. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Resignings: Samuel Pahlsson: Two year, 3.0M contract, cap hit of 1.5M. Reason: He played well, but not to the level he's capable of. Give him a contract for a couple more years to see how he does, the cap hit isn't too bad and its much better than the one he has now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byron Bitz: One year, 750K. Reason: In the few games he played this year, he played great. I'd want to see another, healthy season out of him before he gets some years added to his contract. He hit and added some points in the 10 games this season, he's a decent 3rd liner, great 4th liner to have on our team. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aaron Volpatti: One year, 700K. Reason: I love this guy, he's a good BC boy who unfortunately was injured for much of the season. He brings energy and a hard-working attitude. See how he fares in a healthy season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sami Salo: One year, 1.0M. Reason: Salo was arguably the most consistent Canuck defender, I think at his age a 1 year, 1 million won't hurt the team and in fact could turn out to be a steal. If he's willing to come back for another year, it won't be about the money so that's good and he can help to mentor the rookies moving through the system. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc-Andre Gragnani: Two years, 1.5M contract, cap hit of 750K. Reason: Gragnani didn't get significant playing time so it's hard to determine what his value truly is, sign him for a cap-friendly contract and see what sort of player he turns out to be, add more years and dollars if he can make an impact on this team. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cory Schneider: Two years, 6.5M contract, cap hit of 3.25M. Reason: This is arguably the biggest signing of the summer for the Canucks, with Luongo likely gone, he is the future of the team. Schneider is still relatively unproven, so I give him a contract that he'll be happy with and then in the future you can extend him, you can't be handcuffed with a Luongo-type contract again. Schneider in the games he's played in, he is calm and can control the game. He has had some great games, standing on his head and keeping the team in the game (ex. past playoff series vs. LA Kings). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eddie Lack: Two years, 2.5M contract, cap hit of 1.25M. Reason: Lack seems like the next Schneider, once again, keep the years of his contract low to see his development and then add more on later. If Schneider for some reason turns out to be a dud, you have a great goaltender waiting in the wings. If Schneider plays the way everyone expects him to be able to, you can trade Lack for some good pieces down the road. I see another season in Chicago to get in some seasoning and perhaps a few call-ups to get in some NHL experience, then in following year he can be a full-time backup to Schneider. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steven Reinprecht: One year, 750K. Ryan Parent: Two years, 2.0M contract, cap hit of 1.0M. Matt Climie: Two years, 1.5M contract, cap hit of 750K. Nolan Baumgartner: One year, 550K. Reason: Another two years for Parent and Climie will develop them into the players they were once and are expected to be. For Reinprecht and Baumgartner, these guys are here to help mentor and show the ways of hockey to the younger guys, they'll be key to the development of some of the rookies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gone: Mason Raymond Reason: Has played no where near what he's capable of, needs a change of scenery, also adds some cap space to the team. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew Ebbett Aaron Rome Victor Oreskovich Steve Pinizzotto Mike Duco Mark Mancari Dale Weise Reason: For various reasons, most haven't played like they are capable of and just need another team to find to get more minutes and continue on with they're careers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UFA Signings: Brandon Prust: Two years, 1.7M contract, cap hit of 850K. Reason: This guy helps with many of the roster needs of the Canucks. He adds some toughness and he can even chip in with some offense. He would replace Weise, because he is much better and he's that perfect enforcer that we're in desperate need of. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin Biron: One year, 800K. Reason: Biron would provide some solid back-up goaltending and can help mentor Schneider to become a better goalie and person. If he doesn't play well, Lack can easily step in and provide his services. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scott Hannan: Two years, 2.0M contract, cap hit of 1.0M. Reason: A guy right from here that can provide some good defensive play and bit of offense here and there. Wouldn't take a pay increase so that he can play in his hometown. Can slot in to the 3rd pairing alongside Tanev or Gragnani. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PA Parentau: Three years, 5.25M contract, cap hit of 1.75M. What was kesler doing in the kings series? Lol Also, you want a captain who doesnt face the media after adversary? I think this leadership issue is being blown out of proportion. It would have made no difference who was captain, bieska, kesler etc bc they were all playing in same series and outcome was the same. Both would be our best defender! Being 20 years old, OEL is top 10 in icetime in the playoffs. In the regular season, he scored more goals than Keith Yandle. Just sayin'.
