Pavel Bure On Skates Again (With Footage)

Nearly a year ago (June 6, 2011), Sportsnet conducted an interview with Pavel Bure. At the time, Pavel stated he had not been on skates in nearly 7 years. It seemed he was done playing hockey altogether, and it appeared there would never be any chance of him ever again stepping on to the ice in any capacity. For fans who had hoped Pavel would play hockey again, this was heartbreaking.

This February, however, Pavel participated in a very quiet celebration of Summit Series '72 by finally lacing up the skates and competing alongside other hockey legends. He scored a hat trick to secure a 7-5 win against the Canadian legends. I thought it would be neat to share with you the photos and some actual footage of him participating.

*Update* I've uploaded RussiaToday's game highlights to YouTube. While they didn't show any of Pavel's goals due to some particularly shoddy camera work and poor clip selection, he and Mogilny are quite prominently featured in the footage. He wears his usual #10 in this video.

Here he is alongside Alexander Mogilny.

Also, here's Pavel (to the right) skating around with Vladimir Putin at a separate event.

Now, one thing I'm sure we'd all like to find out is whether Pavel can still skate, to a degree, the way he used to. He may have retired several years ago due to knee problems, but he's only 41 years old and still in great shape, apparently.

He still looks like the Russian Rocket. He wasn't exactly skating at top speed, but that might just be because it was an exhibition match. He did score a hat trick, though, and his recognizable skating stride is still there.

It would be great to see what he can still do in a real match.

If he's wanting to play again, give him one year $600,000 deal and get him into playoff condition. He could put up Selanne-like points if he's in game condition. He's only capable of playing in the top 6, though so if we go deep in the playoffs next year he'd probably be in regularly by the 2nd round.

41 years old? Holy frack, thanks now I feel old! I remember being that 12 year old girl drooling over how cute he was...Then going to my first NHL game vs Winnepeg, my two favourite players in the NHL playing against eachother..Pavel Bure and Teemu Selanne. It was a 2-2 and they BOTH scored!!

So nice to see him back on his skates. I wish he would come back to Vancouver and get honoured here...he should. Let bye gones be bye gones.

I saw Dave Babych out there too.. A lot of good Canucks in that game...

Pavel Bure should be in the NHL Hall of Fame.. He is in the top 5 in all time goals per game I believe, five 50 goals seasons, two 60 goals seasons, over a point per game player, so dominate on the ice when he played...

If Cam Neely can make the Hall, Pavel Bure can...

(Lindros should also be in there too from the way he dominated in the 90s)

Even if it was just a publicity stunt, how great would it be if Gillis managed to re-build the bridge between Pavel and the Canucks...then sign him to a PTO just to get Pavel back in a Canucks uniform for a few practices and pre-season games. Then announce that the organization will retire his sweater or add him to the ring on opening night.

Even if he never actually played a regular season game....the media and fans would have a field day.
