Henrik And Bieksa: The True Core

Are you saying Bieksa isn't talented?

He may not have the defensive prowess that Hamhuis has, nor the offensive powerplay specialist that Ehrhoff was. But he more than makes up for that with a different kind of talent, his toughness, his grit, his ability to fight, hit and stick up for teammates, plus he's no slouch in getting points.

Sure he has mental defensive lapses from time to time, he has had some freak injuries etc. But what player doesn't? His upside more than makes up for his deficiencies.

I'm not saying just because Bieksa is a good guy that it puts him atop the core of this team, but the talent/leadership qualities he has definitely does. Aaron Rome might be a good guy, but you won't see me saying he's a big part of leadership on this team.

He has talent, but he's not a consistent player. When I think of a 'core' player I think of someone that would we would sorely miss if they left. In Bieksa's case, I think there are plenty of players out there that can replace what he does on the ice. ( I just really want Weber on our team. :( )

There are a few "signs" I look for that indicate whether it's worth discussing something with a poster. One of them is if they think Ballard is as good (or even better) than Bieksa.

There is only one time since he's got here that Ballard has had to face the type of minutes and opponents that Bieksa has to on a regular basis - that was game 4 in Boston.

Hey Bieksa brings things NOBODY else on the Canucks brings. At 198 lbs, he moves more bodies in front of the net than Edler who is 20 lbs heavier. He is best friends with guys like Rypien, and gives him a place to stay when he is down. He is a right handed shot and does a little of all things offensive (shot, rush the puck, pass, pinch). He competes as hard as he fights. He keeps everybody loose. These things make him invaluable;

even if he is not Weber and not perfect.

I think there was a Team 1040 poll awhile ago and the question was

"Who's Jersey Would You Buy" and Bieksa ended up winning it.

(Its just kind of funny because of all the trade rumours and how it was 2 seasons ago he was the escape goat)

He's a core to the media, and perhaps to the team, but as someone looking at his skill.... he is replaceable. Many players can be found that are like him. Hamhuis really is an amazing defencemen that makes up for his many mistakes. Ballard was even looking like a superstar these playoffs compared to Juice.

While I am not basing anything on the following video, I found it intriguing to figure out who the "core" really is. While Daniel Sedin is a core player, I have come to the conclusion that these two guys define what we think of when we think "Canuck".

Henrik is obviously the better off-ice guy between him and Daniel, and he seems more optimistic. Bieksa seems to always provide a laugh, and is quietly relied upon to be the media guy and the main comedian. Not only that, but Kevin provides the leadership, grit and determination. Whenever there has been a line brawl or anything, Juice is always there and I always find myself cheering him on. There is so many reasons why these two are the core guys.

the next closest two are Daniel and Burrows, followed by Kesler, who has taken a huge hit this season due to a) productivity and B) his bad attitude coming to light.

All in all, Henrik and Bieksa are #1 and Daniel and Burrows are #1a.

I thought "core players" is what you build your team around. You can say sedins, Lu for sure. And Kesler because of last season only. But to build your team around beiska? Hard to say BC I think anyone would take a weber/suter or Duncan Keith or chara over bieska. However, I think bieska is a big peice of the puzzle in making the team complete

Bieksa is an ALPHA dude. That's what puts him at the core.

He is relaxed, confident, and genuine, because he would have realised this at an early age.

He would have been a leader in any walk of life. Much of his popularity comes from being the guy the fans would want as their best mate, their big brother, their boyfriend (if you're a female.....or maybe even for some guys) or husband.

These types also attract animosity from wannabes and people with a chip on their shoulder because they are envious of their popularity and strength of character. We are lucky to have him here I would say.

Bieksa is absolutely a core player. He is not a 1 pairing D. But he does bring a edge 75% of the time. He has made his share of bonehead moves in the last few years. If he was pissed off 100% of the time I think he would be scary to play against every night. He has looked soft at times. He has that year of being pissed off all year he will be hardcore. We need him back!!
