Henrik And Bieksa: The True Core

Bieksa just needs to tweek his mental approach a little. He gets hesistant/anxious at times and is not the same player - becomes prone to mistakes... But when he is aggressive and confident, he plays the game at an exceptionally high level at both ends of the ice - can skate, hit, move the puck, join the rush, and plays with swagger - if he can improve his consistency, he definitely places himself as a "core" player.

As things stand, I think the "core" is the best six players you can put on the ice - the Twins, Burrows, Hamhuis, Edler and Schneider... Every contending team has a lot more than a "core" anyway, so debating about who the core is is not as important as upgrading the depth/weak spots in the lineup.

The label of "core" is irrelevant, as oldnews points out. With apples, its the part you throw away :)

The much bigger question re: Bieksa is what happened to the d-man we saw last year? In the playoffs last season, it looked as if an elite defenceman was emerging, however in the last 20-30 games of this season he was barely average, in fact he was a liability some nights. No doubt a quality guy in the dressing room, and when the going gets tough, but his effectiveness of late is in serious question.

He's a core to the media, and perhaps to the team, but as someone looking at his skill.... he is replaceable. Many players can be found that are like him. Hamhuis really is an amazing defencemen that makes up for his many mistakes. Ballard was even looking like a superstar these playoffs compared to Juice.

While I am not basing anything on the following video, I found it intriguing to figure out who the "core" really is. While Daniel Sedin is a core player, I have come to the conclusion that these two guys define what we think of when we think "Canuck".

Henrik is obviously the better off-ice guy between him and Daniel, and he seems more optimistic. Bieksa seems to always provide a laugh, and is quietly relied upon to be the media guy and the main comedian. Not only that, but Kevin provides the leadership, grit and determination. Whenever there has been a line brawl or anything, Juice is always there and I always find myself cheering him on. There is so many reasons why these two are the core guys.

the next closest two are Daniel and Burrows, followed by Kesler, who has taken a huge hit this season due to a) productivity and B)his bad attitude coming to light.

All in all, Henrik and Bieksa are #1 and Daniel and Burrows are #1a.

I see a lot of crap about Bieksa's defensive prowess on here. Some stupid people have to stop and consider what role the coaching staff asks him to play. Last year we had Ehrhoff and Bieksa was asked to play a defensive role. He did and was tied for second in league +/-. This past year, Ehrhoff was gone and Bieksa was asked to play a more offensive role - which he did, and got 46 points - mostly with only 2nd unit PP time.
