Hopes for Offseason

Alright well I appreciate some of the threads dedicated to potential off season moves but a majority of you seem to ignore the potentiality of a cap roll back. I've heard 64 million down to 62 million. At this time we have 17 players on contract for 54 million. This does not include Schneider.

So the first major deal is Schneider, and I hear people hoping for something in the 3-4 mil range, and this seems realistic.

The next move is a second line centre while Kesler is out for up to 2 months to start the season. Once again we need someone in the 3-4 mil range that can put up points and is willing to slot into the third line when Kesler returns. Olli Jokinen comes to mind, but I can hear the eyes role. So please state who you feel could fill this role, possibly Schroeder?

Next is something we haven't really acknowledged since the Ehrhoff departure, that being a defenceman that can play the right side and put up some points. Salo is on his way out and Tanev is on the cusp of making the NHL. In this respect we need a prospect or proven NHLer that can log top 4 minutes playing the right side. At this point we only have Bieksa.

Schenn, Gardiner, Schultz or Garrison come to mind, these players will cost us Luongo or else up to 4 million.

Departures:

Sami Pahlsson - 35, retires or else plays in Sweden. Hard to justify 2.6 million for a guy that scores 4 goals

Mason Raymond - Joins Disney on ice as the fairy from Peter Pan.

Beyond these departures I can't see how else we free up cap space.

So with these propositions and facts I will boil it down to some simple questions for you lazy readers.

Who should slot into the 2nd line spot?

Who do you propose we pick up to play top 4 right side D?

How would you free up cap space to sign key players like Schneider?

lol without even reading your post - i laughed at your name ossi vanannen!! I had high hopes for him!!

For the 2nd line spot - It's gotta be via trade or give shroeder the chance.

For defence I think were done with picking up top 4 guys - we really legitimetly need a top 2

I think that the cap will actually go up - theirs been a bunch of articles and even on here its suppose to go up pretty high so I'm not too sure about that but If we do got to move cap - Luongo could go but we'd get a very bad return if we use him as a salary dump

I thought there was speculation that the cap roof might increase, but either way you nailed our needs on the head.

Pahlsson could re-sign here, but for a 3rd liner he's going to take a considerable pay cut or leave because we have Lapierre and Malhotra who can fill his role. What we seriously lack though is a scoring center, which is where Hodgson would have fit in perfectly.

The 2 most important aspects we need to clean up are our defence and center position - the goalies are fine no matter which may MG decides to go. We desperately need to get bigger, stronger and more sounder on defence: Bieksa, Edler and Hamhuis produce enough offence from our blueline.

Hopefully, we can move Ballard to free up some cap-space and sign a physical shutdown guy for 3.5 - 4 million, then maybe acquire another in a trade with Salo due to play limited minutes and Edler in desperate need for a defensive specialist partner.

On offence, I'd like to see Jensen have a chance playing with Hansen on our 3rd line, Kassian will hopefully have a strong off-season and play on our 4th line and the rest of our forward lines should stay in tact. As for Kesler's replacement, maybe we find a cheap rental player like Morrison (but not, just someone similar to him) or have Lapierre step up into the 2nd line.

With all the success rookies are having these days (and even last season, Hodgson was scoring above a 20-goal pace with us) and how they're carrying their teams in the Finals, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Canucks lean on maybe Schroeder, Kassian and Jensen.

I'd like the Canucks to make whatever moves they need to, to bring in Cody Franson and Colin Wilson as a our top4 right handed Dman and our third line center and a veteran to back up Schneider

What do the Canucks do? They stop f$c%ing around, is what they do.

This line-up will take the cup from any team. Still under $64 million

Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)

Evander Kane ($3.100m) / Jordan Staal ($4.000m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m)

Chris Higgins ($1.900m) / Adam Burish ($1.150m) / Jannik Hansen ($1.350m)

Byron Bitz ($0.700m) / Maxim Lapierre ($1.000m) / Nicklas Jensen ($0.875m)

Mike Duco ($0.550m) / /Zack Kassian ($0.875)

Shea Weber ($7.500m) / Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m)

Kevin Bieksa ($4.600m) / Sami Salo ($2.000m)

Jake Gardiner ($1.675m) / Justin Schultz ($0.900m)

Aaron Rome ($0.755m)/ Chris Tanev ($0.700m)

Cory Schneider ($3.500m)

Eddie Lack ($0.900m)

Total roster - $62,675,000

The following players should be dealt to make it happen

Roberto Luongo - If I was him, I'd want out to.

David Booth

Alex Edler

Mason Raymond

Manny Malhotra

Keith Ballard

Andrew Alberts

Aaron Volpatti

Lol at the above post. I'm going to try to turn this thread around before the coke heads show up.

My thoughts on October line up:

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows

Kassian - Schroeder - Booth - could actually work, Kassian balances out the lack of size. Schroeder adds playmaking.

Higgins - Malholtra - Hansen - Malholtra gets his groove back, shows that hustle. *fingers crossed*

Volpatti - Lapierre - Bitz

Duco, Ebbett

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Edler - Schenn

Ballard - Tanev

Salo

Schneider

Lack

A lot of youth movement here. Thoughts on a younger team?

My thoughts for the off season

Put Kassian in Chicago for a year to mature and develope. We kept CoHo on the farm for this reason and this past year he was playing well and looked like he undestood our system. IMO Kassian looks lost out their on the ice and in no way shape or form is he a 1st or 2nd player right now. I don't undestand when people say they would put Kassian on the top lines ahead of Lappy. Lappy does have a bit more skill and believe it or not more grit then Kassian has shown us since he has arrived. One or two seasons in Chicago and hopefully Kassian can turn into a force for our team.

My second thought, do not acquire Luke Schenn. If you do this you might as well hire Pierre Mcquire to do our play by play and put me out of my misery.

As for the people who want Jensen to come up. I wouldn't rush it. The kid just joined the wolves at the end of the season. While he played excellent in a few games, he was quick to receive a concussion. With everything we went through with Injury Prone Cody should we really rush Jensen up to the NHL? While he was a first round draft pick... we got him 29th. Usually rookies aren't brought up fresh with no AHL experience unless they are in the top 10. I say take it slow with Jensen. If things go well for him though throughout the season it's good to know we'll have him as a secret weapon for the playoffs.

2 factors MG must consider:

1/ he works for the AQ's...therefore if the ownership groups have a cap figure in mind for the new CBA, chances are MG will be forced to work within that stated cap until the new CBA is signed (no use in signing a F/A with a higher total team cap hit then be forced to deal someone in Sept or worse yet, stick a high value asset on a one-way down in Chicago).

2/ what is Edmonton doing? Until we can determine, sadly probably not until draft day, what Edmonton is doing to touch up their roster it will be difficult for us to counter. Both GM's may be wondering what the other is planning.

Therefore, short of securing RFA Cory within the guidelines set out on draft day, we may not see any quick deals made...this may have to be a wait and see summer. Also (and traditionally) we usually don't see too many star RFA's scooped up by other teams. Cap space (as many GM's are now coming to realize) is far too precious a commodity to risk signing a star RFA to an over-inflated contract just to ensure he gets "stolen" from the team that owns his rights.

So settle in and prepare to be dissappointed if we don't land any superstars here...chances are Edmonton won't be landing any either, so we should be a lock for 1st in NW again...at least for 1 more season.

why do, so many, want to gut this team?....we won two president's trophies, went to game 7 of the scf and got beat this year, to a team that seems to be beating everybody....we need a number 4, right handed d-man to compliment edler....a top 9 forward.....and trade a goalie.....i'ld like to see the amex line given another shot....lappy, moved up to third line center.....possibly a ballard trade....and a few more fans, who don't disrespect their players....
