The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed goaltender Riku Helenius to a two-year contract, Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced today. The first year of Helenius’ contract will be a two-way deal, while the second will be a one-way.

Helenius, 24, played in 33 games for JYP of Finland’s SM-liiga, compiling a 1.64 goals against average and .936 save percentage. The 6-foot-3, 211-pound goaltender appeared in 13 playoff games this past season, posting a 1.73 goals against average and a .947 save percentage, helping lead JYP to the league championship. The Palkane, Finland native was also given the Urpo Ylonen Award as the top goaltender during the regular season.

The Finnish netminder was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the first round, 15th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Helenius made his NHL debut with the Lightning on January 30, 2009 against the Philadelphia Flyers in a relief effort and stopped both shots he faced.

Maybe..maybe....maybe not Hall of Famer, but could be a solid number one goaltender.

Yzerman looked like a good gm in year 1. But letting Smith go and now his reluctance to acquire a big time goaltender shows how green he is.

I find it hilarious all these NHL teams thinking they are going to find a diamond in the rough for the most important position, looks like you'll be learning the hard way Stevie. All those years with an average Osgood, doesn't Stevie realize it was because of Lidstrom they could get away with it.

To be fair, Smith wasn't exactly doing as well in Tampa Bay has he has been in Phoenix. It's really easy to accuse people based on hindsight.
This thread was really just a figment of your imagination...

As much as i loved him in seattle, helnius is not a number goalie in the nhl. He'll start in the A and maybe get promoted if tampa can't get stable goaltending. Not the solution to their problems

It's an easier sell to sign a legit depth goaltender to a contract before you go out and trade for a 50 game, bonafide #1 starter.

Kassian.... Taylor Pyatt 3.0

Lies. He's more of a Steve Bernier. Hopefully his talent level goes up so he can become like a Taylor Pyatt.

Not at all, this might be the kid Luongo mentors.

Because if they fail to upgrade goaltending in the off-season, I don't see how they can make the playoffs.

This contract guarantees him a spot with the big club in the second year of it.

Great AHL goalie, very little NHL experience, a whole 288 minutes. A starter? Uh, not a chance.

At least yet. Stevie Y needs to put someone in that net who is proven while they have such a strong offensive core.

Well, he hasn't let in a single goal in the NHL, those are hall of fame numbers.

Tampa's D isn't good enough to have an average goalie.

They need a legit number 1 goaltender to bail them out when they're too agressive offensively.
