Defense = Major Cause of So-called Luongo Breakdowns

Everytime we went down against Boston in the finals the team just gave up, some of the "meltdown" games the game was scoreless for most of the first period and sometimes after it was over it was still scoreless. It's not liek Luongo didn't keep them in it long enough to at least get ONE goal, we didn't capitalize on our chances then Boston did and the floodgates opened

I think the main point is valid, although you can't apply it to the point where Luongo gets zero blame. It's a fact that, even for the elite, elite goalies, the D makes all the difference in the world. Look at Mike Smith. He plays for Tampa and can barely keep his Save % above .900 and even gets demoted to the AHL. Then he plays for Phoenix and has a tremendous season, posting a 2.21 GAA and .930 Save % and 8 shutouts, a season that, in my mind, should have garnered him a Vezina nomination over Pekka Rinne. Look at Kari Lehtonen and how he struggled to play up to par for the Thrashers. Then he gets traded to the Stars and puts up a real solid 2.33 GAA and .922 Save % and the Stars didn't even have that stellar a defense.

At the end of the day, as much as elite goalies are expected to perform regardless, the defense does go hand in hand with the performance of your goalie. Luongo still puts up more than good enough numbers on his own (2.41 GAA, .919 Save% this year) but is more than capable of putting up elite numbers when his D's are doing their job, like last year when he put up a 2.11 GAA, .928 Save% and received a Vezina nomination.

It's just a fact and Luongo takes more criticism than he deserves because people choose not to factor in the shoddy play of the defense in front of him.

:picard: The problem is not strickly def or goaltending, it is the entire team effort that stinks, the forwards are not scoring, the def looks like swiss cheeze, and Luo apears to only be giving 50% effort on any given night, Cory plays hard, but because of the above concerns fights a losing battle!

The blame doesn't rest on any one guy! Coaching is a problem and so is the captain! Many changes must be made before the door closes on this team for winning the cup!

Luongo has gotten better in shootouts, and that doesn't really matter too much cause its the same argument, EVEN if he makes a save, we usually dont end up scoring on the other end! He's great with penalty shots, and shootouts dont occur in the playoffs, so why worry.

Lu lets in a lot of weak goals in the playoffs, sure the D needs improvement but his job is to stop pucks. The team plays better in front of Schneider because they have more confidence with him in goal...plain and simple. They can say all they want about how great Lu is, talk is cheap...actions speak volumes. The team is tentative and plays afraid in front of Lu when the games matter, this is a different team with schneids in net...a better team.

When a game is lost its rare you can blame it all on the goalie. Unless its leafs goalies, but not a 5.5 mil goalie. The forwards and defense should be accountable also. However, for an elite goalie Lu does have alot holes in his armor. Five hole, sharp angle, glove side, and those damn swan dives on breakaways lol. I've never seen any goalie do those swan dives or belly flops so consistently under pressure. I've read somewhere it's BC he has size 14 feet haha but who knows.

you fail to point out our superstars piss poor efforts in the shootout and you fail to counter with any other valid response about our defensive breakdowns.

O Really

Nice saves! Now who the bad ones too lol

fixed, he also gave up 3 against Boston in January same amount Luongo did against Boston in game 7 of the finals. The difference is the team scored 4 goals for Schneider and 0 for Luongo, they may have the "same team" in front of them but they sure as hell played alot better in front of Schneider in January than Luongo in the finals against Boston

What's with all these Luongo threads popping out of nowhere all of a sudden..

I dont get the mindset of these fan boys/girls who really believes Luongo is the best option for our goaltending situation going forward.

How do you guys not see that CS is better NOW and for the FUTURE of this franchise..

If we trade CS instead of the aging and declining player with a lifetime contract and history of Playoff meltdowns, that contradicts everything MG says about letting players earn their spots on the team.

Say we trade CS, Luongo continues to breakdown in the playoffs.. then what? good luck trying to convince Lack to stay here or any young up n coming goaltender for that matter, because they know whatever they do or how well they play, they'll always be second to "GOD" AKA Luongo..
