Mike Gillis on TEAM1040 at 2:45 PM PST

Sounds good, the Canucks need Raymond to play well if they want to succeed. Like it or not, the only other 2 purely skilled guys are the Sedins - the rest of our forward group is ALL medium-sized, bulky powerforwards with a bit of speed but their lack of skill showed in the playoffs against LA. Raymond brings that element of speed and his shot can be one of the best on the team if he works on it a bit more, so we need him to do well. Good job MG in identifying this and not just replacing him by another powerforward like Gaustad or Clowe or our forward group would be so one-dimensional and easy to plot against.

I really hope he addresses our problems on defence as our first priority. There is a large pool of great UFA defencemen that he should be targetting.

KEYPOINTS:

  • Volpatti is back to 100% physical strength, Gillis believes that he can bring leadership, grit, and hard working 4th line play to the game. Thinks he will get better as a player.

  • Have not gone through arbitration with Raymond. Hoping to reduce up to 15% of his qualifying offer's required amount. Says that it's to save money under the cap.

  • Gillis believes that Raymond can return to his 25+ goal form. Says the team will push him to give his best. Mentions multiple times that they want him on the team, basically confirming his return.

  • Asked if the club has ever thought about letting Raymond go to another team. Gillis says that it isn't "really the way it works".

  • Gillis believes that thin crop of free agents has no effect on his value as Raymond will stay a Canuck.

  • Gillis has not talked to Luongo lately, and will not say anything about his situation.

  • Lots of interest and inquiries about Luongo.

  • Tampa's trade does not thin the pool of Luongo suitors.

  • Thinks the Kings caught fire at the right time, says there is no pattern in the modern NHL to dominate the league year after year. Believes that the Canucks can break through to win a Stanley Cup soon providing the bounces start going their way, etc.

  • Does not believe that the Canucks really have a window. Believes Daniel being out was a major part why LA beat Vancouver.

  • Disappointment goes through Mike's mind about June 15th, 2011. Riots a "difficult time", but claims everyone has learned from it, including the team.

  • Believes that the trade front at the NHL draft will be slower than usual - doesn't think there will be any significant trades until after initial free agent period.

  • "Some uncertainty about the future", going to be interesting 4 to 5 months

  • Doesn't know what to expect lockout-wise, going to do whatever the team needs to in order to improve the Canucks

  • Wants to get things done now, not planning for the future so much.

Kind of a "shoot yourself in the foot" statement. Raymond's agent can take that into arbitration and say "Mike Gillis believes my client will be a 25+ goal scorer again, so reducing his salary doesn't make sense in this marketplace. Player's who score 25+ goals are making MORE than my client's salary was to begin with, if anything his salary should increase..."

You would rather have Raymond over clowe??!! Clowe is a prototypical playoff power forward which is what the nucks lack. Raymond brings speed yes but then what? He does nothing with it. We have plenty of speedy forwards like burrows, kesler, Hansen who bring much more than just speed.

Gillis is a loyal guy. I don't think he's willing to move Manny, Raymond, or Luongo just because they underperformed expectations. He knows Raymond and Manny were coming off serious, potentially career ending injuries and is giving them the benefit of the doubt. He also knows regardless of how everyone is calling for Luongo's head, aside from his usual October slump he was a pillar for the team.

I've said it before, but I can easily see Luongo and Schneider playing around 40 games each in tandem. Schneider is our clutch, Luongo is our workhorse. There is nothing wrong with having two number one goaltenders, look at Pittsburgh or Philly when you put your trust in one number one come playoff time. Luongo is worth his 5.3 million hit and I would give Schneider at least 3 million per year for next couple of years until he becomes a UFA and then re-sign Schneider to a long-term deal that matches Luongo's hit.

Luongo is a team player. If his play dictates less games, he will get less games. Luongo is a perfect veteran guy to mentor and backup an up and coming all-star like Schneider. There is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't keep him. Remember the cap keeps going up but Luongo is signed long-term, his contract is set in stone for the rest of his career. Do you really think that a 5.3 million hit will matter all that much when the cap ceiling hits 80+ million in a couple of years. Answer: NOPE.

Also, I am ecstatic that Volpatti was re-signed. Volpatti-Lapierre-Weise was our best 4th line all year. While I can see Weise being taken our in favour of a guy like Bitz or pinizotto (should they be re-signed), Volpatti brings a ton of energy, physicality, and gritt to our team and 4th line. The guy will fight anybody, rarely loses, and doesn't seem to feel pain. Love this guy.

Thanks for the summary OP. Always like to hear what MG says.

I like Volpatti's game and am glad they re-signed him.

I also appreciate Gillis' forthrightness where Raymond is concerned - I think Raymond is far too maligned and deserves another opportunity to prove himself - I'm glad Gillis is giving him that. I think he has struck a good balance with arbitration - if he had simply qualified Raymond we would never have heard the end of it from all the Nancies.

Tampa signings make no difference in Luongo situtation - everyone knows that the real interest is from Florida, Toronto, Columbus...

But I really wish Gillis would be less prudent - I think he should simply show everyone all his cards so that the fans can feel like their GM makes them knowing what is going on the number one priority, as opposed to doing what is best for the team and not spreading all their business on the front page of the Province. I mean let's get real - if Vancouver wants a GM that is transparent there would have to be a fundamental change in the media disposition in Vancouver - as it is they are a liability and force Gillis to be measured - to be loose with information and feed all the speculation and bottomfeeding would be plain stupid in this context. Not to mention that when you are weighing various options/negotiating with numerous teams, the dumbest thing he could do would be to tip his hand. The best thing he can do is relate that he is in no hurry whatsoever to move a goaltender - first, that may in fact be the case, and second, it discourages other GMs from wasting time with lowball offers - if you want to break up Vancouver's tandem, it will cost.

These kinds of statements are not meant for the fans, they are meant for 29 other GM's. If GIllis came out and said yeah we got 3 calls about Lu, and 2 backed out already...what does that do for the team? What does that do for Lu? What does that give away to 29 other gm's? You have to understand MG is doing a job, he is not there to entertain us. His players do that on the ice.

Just ignore Bodee. He has just once again proven himself to be totally clueless. Ryan Clowe has 45 points(18 goals and 27 assists) over 68 games in his playoff career, while consistently proving himself to be a leader, both on the ice and off and a physical force and one of the very best power forwards in the league, while the illustrious Mason Raymond has a putrid 16 points(a whopping 7 goals and 9 assists) in 51 career playoff games, while providing no physical presence at all. Anyone who will argue that Clowe isn't a better player than Raymond, especially in the playoffs, is an idiot.

"18 starting goalies in the world and he's one of them." Interest from teams that don't have one of them.

Tampa essentially wasn't one of the team's expressing interest in Luongo, so signing Lindback doesn't change the pool of those that are.

Doesn't exactly take mental gymnastics or advanced critical thinking to keep up with what Gillis is saying there.

It takes a complete child to be talked down to by others. Intelligence was not specific to you at your moment of birth.

Few people on earth retain this trait, many are annoying self indulgent a holes ,allowing themselves personal license to browbeat others with glee.
