hockeyking Posted June 18, 2012 Share Posted June 18, 2012 I believe their is nothing preventing a person from being loaned its just an agreement for a certain amount of money he will play for your team. But the cap hit will be on the team loaning the player since he is contracted to them. Still the player could refuse to sign the agreement because this is a separate contract and the team loaning cannot recall him if they are mistreating their player or stalling its development or need him for their own team and will not be held liable for any injuries. its easier to do this at a lower level because their is no cap to worry about cap that how Huet was loaned to the Swiss league and he had to pass waivers to be sent down so the cap hit doesn't count. Plus there is always the tampering issue, because Toronto management would have more access to our player then we will (in that scenario of Cody Hodgson to Toronto). Say you had someone with too high a contract but you wanted to maintain his trading rights for later. If he was putting you over the cap and could help out another team in the short term I don't see how a loan couldn't be arranged. Chicago loaned out Huet to the swiss league quite recently. Not sure if loaning to other NHL teams is allowed in the CBA but to say that it would be plain stupid is unfair cause there could be potential win win situations that could come of it for both parties. A loan player is one who can't make his team's current roster because they have no room for him, so instead they get him NHL experience by loaning him to another team. At best we're talking about 1 or 2 players per team and probably only 15-20 teams may be in position to offer these prospects. 3. It's about player development, not swapping star players and if you don't think they should be eligible to play in the playoffs fine, but where you draw the conclusion that the playoffs would look like an all-star game with other teams star players playing on different teams is beyond me. Canucks fan in chicago Posted June 18, 2012 Share Posted June 18, 2012 hmmm...interesting...I'm a big football fan (yes, it's football, not soccer) and this is an intersting idea. Salary cap... if the NHL were to adopt the loan system every single team's cap would fluctuate year after year, cause let's say a guy making 2 million gets loaned to another team but as soon as he returns from his loan the original team is over the cap? Obviously in football the big teams like Man U, Chelsea, Aresenal, Real, etc literally buy the best team because their isn't a cap. the NHL doesn't need a loan system because of the AHL, if you'll notice in football they don't have minor leagues (their are of course different levels but none affiliated with each other) so basically what happens all the time is Bench players on Arsenal or whatever get loaned out for a season to a lesser team for the playing time, then they come big to the parent club with a year of playing time under their belt. Wonderine Posted June 18, 2012 Share Posted June 18, 2012 Point well taken, however are you talking about Coho being replaced at the minor league or as a call-up if one of the Canucks centers is injured. Remember the Canucks felt that since they were deep at center they could afford to loan him out. Let's put this another way, if the Canucks could keep both Roberto and Cory would you not be interested in Eddie Lack being loaned to an Eastern conference team as a back-up just to see what they havei n him at the NHL level instead of him playing 2 or 3 more seasons in the minors before they could bring him up.
