Performance

"We have been extremely proud of how our team has produced this season," said GM Cal and Gary when reached for comment about what he's seen so far. It's not secret that going into this season that Vancouver seemed, at least on paper, able to challenge for a playoff spot. What has unfolded though are quite a few spectacular performances so far this year. Patrick Kane went into this season more as a question mark than a sure thing, but has responded by being one of the best forwards so far this season. The same can be said for young star Matt Duchene, who seems to have risen to the challenge and taken another step forward along with James Van Riemsdyk, who seems to have finally found a home here in Vancouver. The biggest surprise this season has been young defenseman Brenden Dillon. "Brenden has been nothing short of spectacular and has worked his butt off to get to this point in his young career. It's great seeing our captain, Zdeno, take him under his wing and show him what it takes to be a true pro in this game. If he keeps working hard, the sky's the limit for him," said Cal and Gary.

Recent Trade

With Vancouver near the top of the league standings, it came as a shock when news broke that Vancouver had dealt top six forward PA Parenteau to Carolina for prospects Mark Stone and Derrick Pouliot. "These deals are really tough to make because there's a fine line between winning and asset management. At the end of the day, we felt that we were a better team going forward if we made this deal. It's really hard to see PA go," said GM Cal and Gary, with a clear sign of distres as he stood in front of the media. "I understand that PA was playing excellent hockey for us, but looking at our cap situation going into next year, we made a judgement call that PA had been playing at a rate where he not only deserved a fair value contract, but a bigger role on the team as well. Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to deliver that to him on both counts and that would simply be unfair to him," responded Cal and Gary. In Mark Stone, the Canucks get a player that they believe is really close to being NHL ready and has top six upside. Derrick Pouliot may be a bit of a wait, but he's certainly the most intriguing piece coming back. Derrick Pouliot now joins his fellow draftees Cody Ceci and Griffin Reinhart in the organization. Pouliot is said to have elite vision and has the potential to quarterback a powerplay and has the upside of at least a number four defenseman.

Future Moves

"We are always looking to improve the team. Ideally, we'd like to add another bottom six forward or two, but we'll see what happens," said Cal and Gary. As for any improvements for the top six? "Unless a deal falls on our lap, that will come in the summer time. Right now, we have been very impressed with the play of JT Miller and Tomas Tatar and both will get a long look on our second line," replied Cal and Gary just before he left the media scrum.

Looks like this is 90% done and waiting on the board of Gov's consent to go forward. I think we should mimic it as close as possible, and in the case of Quebec, simply have them fill the Coyotes spot..I know the executive here is considering some options but here is the TSN story from last evening:

The National Hockey League Players' Association has given its approval to the NHL's proposed re-alignment plan.

NHLPA executive director Don Fehr released a statement on Thursday, saying, "After discussions with the Executive Board, the NHLPA has given consent to realignment, to be re-evaluated following the 2014-15 season."

In an NHL memo obtained by TSN last week, the league proposed an Eastern Conference with 16 teams and a Western Conference with 14 teams.

Most notably, the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets will move East, while the Winnipeg Jets will move back West. The Jets have been playing in the Southeast Division since the Atlanta Thrashers franchise moved north to Winnipeg prior to last season.

A vote from the NHL Board of Governors is expected within a week to make the plan official.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly also released a statement on Thursday, saying, "The NHL Players' Association confirmed to us today that it has consented to a revised Plan for Realignment, effective for the 2013-14 season. Our next step will be to bring the proposed Plan for Realignment to the NHL Board of Governors for its consideration. We will update the status of the process as future developments warrant."

The divisional re-alignment, as outlined in the memo, would be as follows:

Western Conference

Pacific Division: Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

Mid-West Division: Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg.

Eastern Conference

Central Division: Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Toronto.

Atlantic Division: Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, N.Y. Islanders, N.Y. Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington.

The top three teams in each division would make the playoffs, along with the four wild-card teams - the best two non-division winners in each conference.

Some excellent moves Romo, but you have 24 players dressed here. 23 is the maximum. I've left Martinek un-assigned for now.
