Canuck Tidbits

*General Manager Cal and Gary arriving at the podium*

"Were you content on standing pat?"

- Yes, we were. For the longest time, the only thing we had on the market available for trade was one of Patrick Kane's old jockstraps, but this business is a fluid industry and anything can change on a dime.

"How did the Plekanec deal come to fruitition?"

- Well, originally, another deal had fallen onto our laps, but it fell through for reasons I will not disclose out of respect for all the other parties involved. From there, we felt like we had the pieces to go out and solidify our group. We made a promise to Zdeno when he signed his extension here that we would compete for the Cup every single season and we decided that it was within our best interests to try and fulfill that promise. It was a rather smooth negotiation with Anaheim. They got a lot of good young pieces and we wish them nothing but the best.

"Talk about what Plekanec and Gionta bring to this team?"

- They solidify our second line along with James. We feel that we won't have to rely on our number one line as much anymore and they bring that experience factor that is invaluable when you're trying to go on a Cup run.

"Do you feel you overpaid?"

- Some might suggest that we did and that's fine. However, we were able to keep our top young prospects in Gustav Nyquist, Peter Holland, Tomas Tatar, Cody Ceci, and Derrick Pouliot. We felt like we had the depth to not only make a trade of this magnitude, but not totally cripple the system. At the same time, it was tough giving up guys like JT and Griffin, but you got to give to get and we're focused more on what we're receiving in this deal.

"Steckel and Ebbett?"

- You can never have too much depth up front in the playoffs. Injuries happen and you got to be prepared. We're excited with this current group of players that we have and hope that they can make a deep Cup run. It's an exciting time of year to be a Vancouver Canuck fan. Thanks guys.

Islanders Sunk?

The New York Islanders failed to make a single acquisition on deadline day leading to criticism that the team wasn't busy enough helping this roster which seems to have excellent potential. Have they already conceded defeat?

Not so according to inside sources. The mood around the head office all day has been that the management felt they had what they needed to make a deep run already and that everything else was simply a want. This corps, as planned, has gotten better every week. There was a quiet confidence to decide to stick with the plan.

The Islanders had done much of their shopping prior to the deadline by acquiring Matt Cullen, Anton Stralman and Brendan Morrow. Included with getting Colin Wilson, and potentially having a healthy Todd Bertuzzi, back might also be an injection into a line-up with both playoff proven veteran leadership and young players on the rise throughout every line.

Despite a late attempt to add to the roster, the developmental system remains unchanged except for the addition of Pit 3rd 2013 acquired for UFA John Erskine, who had yet to be activated fro LTIR.

The question remains. Is this steady leadership of a strong course or a GM who can't do what needs to be done? Time will tell.

In the end, no moves were made today for the Sabres. Team must've been happy to be kept together as they responded with a 40+ point night (9 players iced tonight)

Best of luck to all who make the playoffs. (Unless we meet, then I hope I crush you)

Looking at everyone's rosters makes me quite anxious for what the playoffs will bring. Going to be a lot of fun following the matchups down the stretch.

Hoping to make it past the first round for only the 2nd time in my CDCGML career!

Nope the way you did it there is fine PO.

To teams posting roster updates, I didn't look at any while I was still putting trades through, but I will try to get to them today. I'll be starting on the top of page page 252. If you posted your latest roster update further than that, quote it and bump it up so I see it. It's just easier than me trying to figure out the update was before or after the last trades you made etc. Thanks guys :)

The division race between Vancouver and Winnipeg is now down to only 53 points!! Much closer than I thought after the 200+ point gap that existed a few weeks ago. The Jets have been gaining ground, but the Canucks made some big moves on deadline day and their re-enforcements are just arriving... should be a great finish!
