Hard not to be happy with the team turning things around with the league leading 67 points last night. With only 43 points seperating 4th to 8th, we have a chance to shoot up the standings with a few more big nights like last night.

Yikes horrible performance last night. Missing our starting goalie and #1 defenseman is starting to hurt us. Crawford is supposed to be backing up tonight at least and Orlov is 10 days - 2 weeks away, hopefully better news next week.

Feb. 22, 2013

Turning Things Around

After a slow start to the abbreviated season, the Jets have been climbing the standings in recent weeks and there's plenty of credit to go around. Newly anointed captain, and recipient of a brand new 5 year contract extension, Sidney Crosby, has been dominant, with 8 points in the last 4 games and is pacing the Jets offense. Crosby has been scoring at a clip of 1.47 points per game and proving that the health concerns are behind him. He's also shown an ability to throw the team on his back and carry them when the rest of the team is slumping.

"At the start of the year, a lot of the guys were having trouble finding their legs. Injuries played a part, but we just weren't in game shape. We needed to be better prepared," Jets head coach Dale Hawerchuk said Thursday. "Sid however, was ready to go from day one. He's carried this team and gave everyone the chance to get their legs under them. Now that everyone is starting to come around, we've looked much more like the team we expect to be. Ryan and Zach getting back into the lineup helps a lot as well."

The Jets have surged up the standings, from a dismal 26th overall and 12th in the West to a 5th place spot and 16th overall. With the 4th highest point total in the league this month, the team hopes that they will keep climbing. With a league high 12 man games tonight, the Jets will be looking for a big night to keep reeling in the division leading Canucks.

Gallagher probable to return tomorrow night

Jets rookie sensation and fan favourite Brendan Gallagher is likely to be on the ice tomorrow night. Taking line rushes at the end of practice with Ryan Kesler and Chris Higgins, Gallagher said he was 'feeling good' following practice and that while he still needs to get the final okay from the medical staff, he hopes to be in the lineup.

Safety First!

Following the unfortunate accident that resulted in All-Star defenceman Erik Karlsson missing the rest of the season, and the horrific accident that befell Montreal defenceman Zach Redmond recently, the Winnipeg Jets are taking no chances. Friday morning when the players arrived for practice, each player found 4 pairs of kevlar socks in their dressing room stalls. Jets GM canuck2xtreme said that the move was a no brainer.

"Above all else, we want our players to feel comfortable and secure", the GM told Winnipeg Free Press this morning. "It's a family mentality here. I wouldn't send my kids out there with inferior equipment if there is something out there that will better protect them. The same standard applies to our players. Their safety is number one. We don't want anybody getting hurt, on either team. We're taking what steps we can."

The Jets then backed up their claim of safety first when a source within the club said the same stock of kevlar socks is now found in the road teams dressing room, and will be for every game this season.

.

Taking Flight

Fans have been treated to some fantastic performances this season from some of their younger players. Brendan Gallagher's emergence has been a huge lift for the team, but it has overshadowed some excellent performances from Paul Postma and Tyson Barrie, the teams two rookie defencemen.

Postma, playing mostly on the third pairing, has been strong defensively while still contributing on the power play. Chipping in a goal and 4 assists through 15 games, the 24 year old rearguard has impressed the Jets coaching staff with his vision and playmaking skills with the puck. While he still has some work to do on the defensive side of the puck, the Jets like what they see so far.

Equally impressive has been 21 year old Tyson Barrie, who made the roster out of training camp and struggled early on. But after some rough nights and being a healthy scratch a few nights, Barrie took advantage of his latest oppourtunity and chipped in his first NHL point with an assist. Once that monkey was off his back, Barrie has been very strong, working his way into the top 4 and scoring 4 points in his last 4 games, including his first goal. With two top defenders in Shea Weber and Zach Bogosian, a pair of steady veterans in Filip Kuba and Aaron Rome and these two promising youngsters, the future looks bright on the Winnipeg blue line.

As injuries continue to viciously plague the San Jose Sharks, we have been forced to take the unfortunate desperate measure of asking Jakub Kindl to be our 13th forward for the next week. Hopefully, we have earned a player or two back from injury soon enough to make sure Jakub is back on D in appropriate time.

I have to applaud the attention to your team, and use of the league rules. I will in the next 20 seconds or so go back to wanting to crush your pitiful team under my stick blade, but right now, I am glad your an attentive and active GM. Good work.

MSN NEWS 2013:

As the GM of the New York Rangers it is my privilege to introduce veteran Dman Ryan Whitney to the fans and the team. Ryan, a former first round, fifth overall pick will slot into outgoing John Moore's place on the third pairing while he gets to know his way around New York. We would like to thank John for all his hard work, and in parting let him know that we have every expectation he will continue to develop into a splendid blue liner, tough decisions lead to tougher goodbyes. I expect that Ryan will get a little more mileage here than he did in Nashville, and as he continues to rehab from some injuries last year we can expect him to chip into the points we so desperately need to keep pace in this tough eastern Conference. Welcome aboard Ryan Whitney!

Find me a confirmed article saying he's retired. I can't find one. Loads of speculation that he intends to retire and talk of the Ducks 'To Hire Roloson' etc. But nothing official. As far as I can tell, he's still just an unrestricted free agent.
